@Edano Oh this is not good "Citing damage to the walls of the building supporting the pool during last month's hydrogen explosion, the power company says excessive water injection could further weaken the structure of the building."

The elevation drawing of #1 showed a lack of under support for the SFP, there was a big gap. I wonder if that along with the outer frame work being damaged is starting to be an issue?

Kitazawa thanks special US nuclear rescue team
Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa has expressed gratitude to a special US military unit that has been dispatched to Japan to stand ready for an emergency at the disaster-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Kitazawa visited the US Yokota Air Base in Tokyo on Saturday, where about 150 members of the special US force are standing by to respond to nuclear emergencies.

The US team and Japan's Self Defense Forces have trained together there to prepare for a nuclear emergency.

But as the situation at the plant is being relatively stabilized, the team will soon end the mission and leave Japan. Kitazawa viewed a joint decontamination drill by US and Japanese troops.

Addressing the troops, he said it is fortunate that the special team never had to go to the plant. But he stressed that the fact the special unit was stationed in Japan reassured the Japanese people.

Kitazawa said the Japanese government will do its best to stabilize the situation at the plant, so that it will not have such an emergency that the special unit will have to be called in again.

The unit is ready to return to Japan if necessary.

@Nancy All of the steps they are taking comes right out of the NRC report that was leaked. They talk about the stress of extra water on the structures.

There is also a flaw in the structure around the sfp, look at the elevations of reactor 1. There is thick concrete underneath the SFP but then as it ties into the outer wall it is a thin piece of concrete as it goes under the stairwell, so a real lack of support there. Plus all the extra water weight messing with things wherever it is running off to. www.houseoffoust.com

TEPCO wants the water level to reach the top of the fuel rods in reactors one and three by mid July, so it can cool them under more stable conditions.

At the Number 1 reactor, where fuel rods are believed to be the most seriously damaged, six tons of water are being injected every hour.

TEPCO believes the water is vaporizing, then condensing in the containment vessel.

The water level is now estimated to be about half way up the bulb of the dry well.

sinthia... one of our last ditch measures at the facility I worked at was to completely fill the entire building to a certain level.. ~2 feet above the core... so for plant 1 , since the word is that the torus is full.. I don't see why they just don't fill the concrete containment along with the building at the same time to equalize pressure and fill er up...

@Sinthia Domina Kind of a vicious cycle. Load them with water but control the radioactive run off and don't ruin the building stability. sisyphus sounding.

nancy.. I think that is if the concrete containment is full with not the whole building.. all that water around the torus, vessel, out and inside the containment would dampen things

@elainekirk look at the low wide center of gravity on the Chuba reactor plans and then go back and look at the plan of #1 I posted. Off center and very high and narrow. The underground base is not nearly that wide.

@dean I dont think the concrete containment would hold water without modification...too many vents, pipes conduit, holes, cracks.

Edano.. what I purpose is fill now.. get the whole mess cooled down then stabliize and then in the mean time build the water processing facility Areva is talking about and then begin the treatment of the water from the buildings

one thing for sure in my observations.. it will take months the way the are going now.. all the while pumping out air activity into the atmosphere and water out the trenches.. I still like the fill the whole dang thing the rad levels reported by DOE and NRC in the buildings down where the fuel lareas would be in excess of 6000 REM's.. no one is going to come close to that high of level.. to handle fuel etc.. 10 minute dose and your toast
