@radioguy No fooling. I mentioned it earlier, but think it's worth repeating. If you use your browser to search for the word Japan on the homepages of ABC, CBS, or even NPR -- nothing. The word isn't even present on their homepages. The BBC and CNN both have tiny links to other areas if you do a word search for Japan, but they have both buried it -- no new stories.

Radiation leaks from fuel rods suspected at Tsuruga plant
FUKUI, Japan, May 2, Kyodo

Leaks of radioactive substances from fuel rods are suspected to have occurred at a nuclear power plant in Tsuruga, the Fukui prefectural government said Monday, citing a rise in the level of radioactive substances in coolant water.


The operator, Japan Atomic Power Co., will manually shut down the No. 2 reactor of the plant on the Sea of Japan coast and examine the primary cooling system for it. The local government denied that the levels of radioactive substances could threaten the nearby environment.


According to Japan Atomic, 4.2 becquerels of iodine-133 and 3,900 becquerels of xenon gas were detected per cubic centimeter Monday, up from 2.1 and 5.2 becquerels, respectively, during previous measurements conducted last Tuesday.

@Nancy It is an enormously politically charged field. I think that there is a scientific consensus that internal radiation is far more damaging than external, and low-level radiation is harmful. Busby and Valentin (the heads of the 2 opposing radiation risk camps) had a video, where they actually substantially agreed, they were arguing whether internal exposure was 100 times worse than the external radiation graphs (Valentin) or 1000 times worse (Busby).

@Nancy I'm thinking whatever format the whole site takes, we should have pages for the plant as a whole, and then for each of the reactors, with representative photos and accessibility as a key factor in the basic presentation, but then comprehensive depth as you drill down the article. A one-stop for currently accumulated wisdom on each, summed at the top by a rolling edit of the current situation if it's changed? Oh, and did you find a template you like?

@radioguy Yes, I emailed a couple of options but it was right in the middle of the shut down panic at the beginning of the weekend. I will grab them and re-email along with a rough page and category structure so we have a starting point.
