- es.. one reason, the SFPs are not in containment and have no way of treating the isotope release like if the fuel were inside the reactor, some times if you have a leaking fuel element like that,, it could be only one pellet and .. it "may" only leak at the elevated temperatures and seal off when cooled down.. it's sometimes difficult to tell...by dean 5/2/2011 10:58:36 PM

- leaking fuel elements in the reactor can cause the water activity level to increase to levels of shutting down, it will also cause the stack activity levels to increase to shutdown levels and it makes trying to circulated enough to clean up the water difficult,, prior to pulling the top head of the reactor and setting up for work...by dean 5/2/2011 11:03:01 PM

Level now 3300 times limit at No. 2 reactor intake
The operator of the troubled Fukushima nuclear power plant says it has detected higher levels of radioactive materials in seawater samples from near the water intake at one of the reactors.
Tokyo Electric Power Company says it detected 130 becquerels of radioactive iodine-131 per cubic centimeter in samples collected near the water intake for the Number 2 reactor on Saturday. The figure is 3,300 times the national limit and 30 percent higher than the level detected on Friday.

- @dean Thanks. To me damaged is damaged and I'm wondering why the leaking rod wouldn't be removed and better contained in such an instance. As you suggest, there must be all sorts of potential problems with a leaking rod. So would you say removal depends on the extent of any radioactive release, rather than the fact that there's damage per se?by es 5/2/2011 11:07:34 PM

- es.. typically the reactor operates along with about the constant water activity level which is quite low.. they monitor for the fission products in the water like the Iodines ect which if increased .. tells them that there is a leak from a fuel element into the primary coolant water system, I'm not certain what the protocol is at japan reactors but it would necessitate lowering power or shutting the reactor down, run the clean up system on the primary water to see if the leak is able to be cleaned up and then completely shut down and remove the top head of the reactor ... once that is removed, depending on their ability to pinpoint which fuel element is leaking... remove the element or all the elements. One difference between the commercial reactors and the one I worked at.. the commercial reactors routinely change only about 1/3 of the core out.. as apposed to pulling all the fuel elements where I worked to re qualify that fuel loading prior to reuse.by dean 5/2/2011 11:36:27 PM

- Scillia... one thing we can do in a unified way is be persistant in letting your representatives know your concerns and congress reps... letters to the NRC etc.. and the power company.. one area that always is so hard to keep up is .. RIGOR of operation.. or conduct of operations.. it's easy for nuclear operators to become complacent ... .drill drill and re drill... study and classes.. and then .. NRC.. making them toe the line or regulating... and .. finally . in my opinion try somehow to make the industry non profit...

Four antinuclear groups demanded Monday that the government withdraw its decision to set the annual radiation limit at 20 millisieverts for schoolchildren in Fukushima Prefecture, saying the standard poses a health risk.
The four groups — Friends of the Earth Japan, Green Action, Fukuro no Kai, and Mihama no Kai — said during meetings with government officials in Tokyo that 20 millisieverts is the upper ceiling of a safety standard set in 2007 by the International Commission on Radiological Protection.
