@fitter Nope. And I imagine it is. I'm a bit concerned about the working conditions, though. My skin doesn't react well to extreme heat and humidity, so I assume adding rads into it isn't going to help any. ;)

@dean Not like that one.... I only did it once for fun and we didn't go up more than 30 feet, but the ironworkers used to ride it all the time... you always knew the guys not to mess with by the ones that would ride the ball... Well,any credibility the NYT had in this went out the window when they took the HUGE news, that Daiichi was now an INES Level 7, and rather than a 72pt headline reading "Worse than Chernobyl" theirs said something like "Japan Upgrades Nuclear Plant Status"... UNDER a story about Japan being so happy baseball is back. Epic fail.

@Markfm, that is one dumb and callous article and certainly not according to what I expect from the NYT. One sin does not justify another. That about 10,000 people, equivalent of a small town, may have died of cancer because of above ground nuclear tests is regretable to say the least and no justification for deaths that may incur from ionizing radiation in the future however few they may be. The possibility of contaminated food is not even mentioned.

@fitter Heh... my grandfather was a union steward in the Pittsburgh steel mills during their heyday, so I spent some time in the mills there during summers as a kid. Wildly exciting, but not something I aspired to. Though, in radio, I've always been the guy to climb up on the tower on top of a 27 story building to change the light bulbs, because I never felt that just the fact of height added any danger unless you let it. Of course, swaying in a light breeze hundreds of feet off the ground is a thrill too.

The Mark 1 reactors in the United States have undergone a variety of modifications since the initial concerns were raised. Among these, according to Mr. Lochbaum, were changes to the torus — a water-filled vessel encircling the primary containment vessel that is used to reduce pressure in the reactor. In early iterations, steam rushing from the primary vessel into the torus under high pressure could cause the vessel to jump off the floor.

Does anyone know if a rush of pressure into the torus could twist or bow the torus piping? I have seen theories of pressure rush while the torus is too full of water could act like a water hammer.

@dean @radioguy what local did he belong to ..... you have to give those guys a lot of respect.... people think this shit just goes there and no big deal.... outside in mills in PGH the first hting you do in the winter is "not the ice off your stuff... have a freind up in PGH he alomst got killed when a ice chunk came down... he was OK after he changed, but his Pickup did't fair as while..

@ALL Been away and catching up:

1. The air filtration will not greatly reduce radiation levels inside the building, but will bring the airborne radioactivity down to a level where respirators can efficiently filter the air for the user. full face being 1000x www.google.com

2. On 29 April, didn't wind change direction, not my area, but would change the levels in different directions (bo). This beast is still releaseing radioactivity.

3. Dust masks do not provide any (significant) protection for radioactivity. Only well sealed HEPA provide the particulate protection needed. Combine with Charcoal filter for gasseous fission products.

4. Marie, @1:59 this AM you said "I have to admit I didn't expect the numbers to be so...substantial", can you give me that link? or are you just talking about the new Limit 20 mSv?

5. Crops (of different type, maybe weed) should continue in stricken areas. These can consume and concentrate radioactivity, including Cesium. And then be disposed of, not consumed.

6. FHM is a Fuel Handling Machine. Crane operated service module for drawing in and discharging fuel.

7. Fans with scrubbers means sucking air through HEPA filters that remove 99.97% of radioactive particulate.

@radioguy also have been working a little with dean on the cleaning systems and "only one article " that i could not link said the residule hear in the sludge will foster "hydrogen gas and nitous oside (explosive and flammable) the equipment sit on the nort side of the blding a floor above the invert of the reactor .... the tank is drawn as a flat top (not pressuere vessel) and the article states it requires venting.... we know venting has not been good for them Do not know how much sludge may have been in tank...
