@Jim @Nancy The wind was blowing offshore for 10 days or so, recently it shifted east to west. There was a spike in emissions that occurred April 28-29, that spiked the US iodine... this coincided with a sudden spike of radioactivity in reactor #3.

@bo Yes, the plume then moved east to west, and then towards the north. It didn't get as far south as originally forecasted. Takasaki got a glancing blow from it.

@marie That's beginning to enter an area of concern, anything over 6.0 could cause more damage to weakened stuctures.

New Cryptome Images: some of Hamaoka, a few to Fuku and some interesting SDF images. They are using a helicopter to fly over to get data. How can we get that data? I wonder if the USAF stopped doing drone fly overs?

@Bobby1 R3 has an RPV leak out the top cap. Those dates also are when the SFP at 3 and 4 started running hot and boiling frequently.

@Nancy I think many times we are looking at multiple sources. Not to mention the constant dribbling into the sea. That's my greatest concern right now. What's in the air is relatively short-lived.

The tilt came up after they set a personal record, adding 270 tons of water in one day. Wonder if it was sloshing around when they were adding it. (almost 35 tons/hr, for 8 hours)

wtm, bright side is that core temp is increasing less rapidly (though with 9 cubic meters/hr of water, I expect they planned it to decrease)

I was thinking earlier if that object that hit #4 with such force actually started the tilt because without that reinforced top it should have had it would have been like hitting a cereal box

Nothing new on 4. It had a large water injection on 5 May (270 tons), no idea what work occurred there on 6 May.

My assessment….Looking good to cross the Philippines, land interaction here should significantly weaken the system, once crossing here though may have a chance to redevelop but significant redevelopment is not forecast nor modeled, if it were to occur Taiwan land mass should again act as blocking. Should it miss, it may have a chance to pass the STR, this could be very worrisome for the Japan situation, as it would most likely be influenced by steering winds that would push it towards a Japanese crossing. Again….I am NO meteorologist, I am definitely thinking will cross Philippines, models(both single run and ensemble) point to this so it can be said with relative confidence, longer term, the system will still need watching but it seems that it will never be a threat to the Japanese coastline with any strength.

@Bobby 1 thanks, I tried linking the warning track not the sat image! This I think from my basic learning of this area shows what is typical of a track, they usually follow this same arch unless they come under steering influences otherwise(str/high pressure blocking to the north or other wind factors).

@Thunder Yes, pretty typical. It's early in the season, actually before the season still, so it may die out before it nears Japan. The biggest risk is having this system stall off Japan, and set up an extended period of northeast winds, which will affect Tokyo and other highly populated areas.

@Bobby 1, yeah very early in the season, been two other small ones that died early(from memory), our southern season did the same within reason, ended early too but up here the conditions for development eclipse where I live, it's like a breeding ground! Really wouldn't expect this one to have any chance of making it up there with any sort of strength, SST's still very cold that far north, of course wouldn't matter if it made it there in force as an extra tropical system. Stalling wouldn't be good at all, I think they do usually continue on their merry way....still learning this part of the world.Being that I am from the southern hemisphere I have to look at my computer screen upside down!:-)

Any revision on the 20 mSv / yr for children. I keep expecting them to revise it lower and more reasonable.. This is the greatest disaster in Japan, IMHO.

Chubu Electric plans to suspend Hamaoka nuclear power plant

TOKYO, May 7, Kyodo

Chubu Electric Power Co. plans to suspend all reactors at its Hamaoka nuclear plant in central Japan following Prime Minister Naoto Kan's request to do so for safety reasons, company sources said Friday.

The development comes shortly after Kan said at a hastily arranged news conference in the evening that all operations at the plant in Shizuoka Prefecture must be suspended due to concerns that a powerful earthquake could hit the area and trigger another serious nuclear crisis.

''It's a decision made after thinking about people's safety,'' Kan said in announcing the request, referring to the science ministry's prediction of an 87 percent chance of a magnitude-8.0 level quake hitting the Tokai region within 30 years.
