Basically Kan's 'asking' nukes to conform etc is causing protests and there is a big push now for regulation mainly aggravated by chubu deciding they will only consider his request to close hamaoka and that they are thinking of restarting a reactor soon. A case of who is the boss are you gonna obey the nukes or listen to the people

@elainekirk there seems to already be an active people protest movement against Hamaoka. Chubu acting like they rule the country probably did not go over well at all.

@bo I think we are seeing what would have happened with fuku if there hadnt been such devastation and scattering of the people , fuku residents fought through the courts to get tepco stopped but the law practically gives the nukes autonomy as we have seen

Japanese culture is very different than western culture. We like to dislike large corporations. Not true here. Only the Americans avoid McDonalds and Starbucks here. My Japanese friends have told me that McDonalds must be very good quality because they are so successful. There are almost no microbreweries here. People like the big names and trust them.

@bo if you analize the "low level" secondary contamination that is now there in japan... it is really a mess... question.... if you were drinking the waer that came from the wastetreatment plant that now has to track down the "hot" sludge by prouducts.... (do not know it that plant was providing water to the public) Did you then drink "bad water??? and how bad ????

@bo and then they get the people hooked providing the employment it is mass blackmail isn't it. I was reading earlier that government is asking tepco if they can monitors the working conditions at fuku ....

@elainekirk it is a very centralized society. All roads lead to Tokyo. And all roads in Tokyo lead to Ginza where the money is. As we have all seen, TEPCO calls the shots and TEPCO dispenses information as it sees fit. Everyone else, including the GOJ twists in the wind and waits.

@bo I have worked the "sin industries" beer/smokes for the last twenty years... the procedures they follow are so regulated it would amaze people.. it has surprised me that the NPP are not quite as strigint even here in some reg's... but these plant are under FDA reg's and thats what compels them to comply with some things.... also they have panels to assure that a beer made anywere is the same taste as it is over there or else they are marked as such (usually) its to complex to type...

Companies employing a lot of people in areas where employment is scarce always get away with things. In the UK both Sellafield & Sizewell nuclear facilities are supported by the local population despite occasional leaks
