The nuclear reactor vessel flange is welted to the top side of the vessel and has 54 holes for the studs. Inside the flange, there are the support to hold the internal articles of the reactor and keyway. A metal ring, which acts as a gasket, is compressed to the side that is assembled with the head to seal the vessel so that no coolant is leaked from inside.
