  • referring to the upper deck of #4 we know that it had a cantilever roof. in the explosions of march the north wall of the deck was destroyed. in the video from may 7 we see that also the south wall is missing. either tepco tore it down intentionally to access the spent fuel pool or there was another explosion. as a consequence of lacking support, the roof collapsed along a fracture line in north-south direction, as we can see on newer images from videos. the roof must have collapsed between may 7 and may 9. maybe we can get that morer precise. if tepco tore down the south wall intentionally, they must have been aware of a roof destruction. so i assume there must have been a further explosion in #4 sfp that blew away the south wall.

  • @Edano It could have come down in another quake or it could have been intentionally pulled off to access under the SFP. They announced they started work today on reinforcing it.

Obviously there is only one thing he should be concentrating on right now. My thoughts are with your family. I have four (grown) kids myself and I know how hard any health issue with kids is.

  • @Edano There had been a narrow vertical hole in that wall section below the SFP but now it looks like an entire panel in that spot is gone. They either ripped the rest of the wall panel away to get at something or it came off in the quakes. There seems to be a visible difference.

  • @bo this all had me thinking maybe we should see if we can make contact with someone who has specific research experience with structural engineering related to earthquakes. IIRC one of the California state universities has a dept that focuses on that. If we can find someone willing to communicate with us to help fill in gaps they might also be willing to talk with RT. Finding someone in the US might be a better option than someone in Japan where there may be pressure on them to not make waves?

  • @Nancy - this www.geonet.org.nz is the NZ govt earthquake centre (equivalent of USGS but in NZ) also Victoria University of Wellington, NZ has an excellent Earthquake Hazard Centre (bearing in mind it is on a major faultline) www.victoria.ac.nz

  • I am reading a paper on the incidents at the plant. This was new to me, not sure where the author gleaned this statement but interesting either way. "a suspected long vertical crack running down the side of the containment vessel was reported by a utility official" This is in reference to #3

  • @dean What I saw this morning was the video inside SFP #3 (in previous posts this morning). Lots of concrete rubble and roof trussing covering everything inside. #4 had more of the wall panel on the south side removed. Not sure if it fell off or if they removed it to start shoring up the SFP. The construction crew on 4 starts work today to try to prevent the leaning reactor of Fukushima. I'm still reading the UIUC station blackout paper you posted yesterday and looking for first hour data. Did you see the screen shots we got off the TBS cam last night?

  • REACTOR VESSEL FLANGE

    The nuclear reactor vessel flange is welted to the top side of the vessel and has 54 holes for the studs. Inside the flange, there are the support to hold the internal articles of the reactor and keyway. A metal ring, which acts as a gasket, is compressed to the side that is assembled with the head to seal the vessel so that no coolant is leaked from inside.

  • @Markfm Those were the lower DW temp cited as a RPV temp. On 3 they were running over 300 going into the weekend. I hadn't seen what the temp was after the smoke show Saturday on 3.

  • Morning all! I'm not sure if this has posted yet.....interesting. Radiation high at No.3 reactor pool
    The operator of the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has detected high levels of radioactive materials in the spent fuel pool of the No.3 reactor at the plant.

    Tokyo Electric Power Company examined a water sample from the pool on Sunday. The sample contained 140,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium-134 per cubic centimeter, 150,000 becquerels of cesium-137, and 11,000 becquerels of iodine-131.

    None of these substances were detected during an inspection on March 2nd, before the accident triggered by the March 11th disaster.

    TEPCO says these substances may have come from damaged fuel rods in the reactor rather than the damaged spent fuel rods in the pool, because it has detected radioactive iodine, which has a short half-life. Radioactive substances such as iodine are generated during nuclear fission inside a reactor.

    The company says the radioactive substances may have become attached to debris and entered the pool together.

    Footage from the pool at the No.3 reactor on Sunday showed debris, believed to have been caused by a hydrogen explosion, scattered all over the interior of the reactor building.

    The levels of radiation detected are almost the same as those detected in April in water samples in the fuel pool of the No.2 reactor.
