@elainekirk, I have been warned by colleagues here that as foreigners we are being "noticed" and that there is more surveillance than we care to think. But we are somewhat high profile in the community, at least in Hiroshima where there aren't a lot of foreigners like Tokyo. I have been pretty critical of the GOJ and TEPCO on tv for two months now, and in that period I was also awarded a fairly substantial grant for my real academic work from the federal government. So I don't know what to think.

And as I have said before, my internet provider is the local electric power company. Who clearly have a vested interest in these issues. Also, @Pedro Jesus, if there were surveillance it wouldn't come from Fukushima, but from Tokyo.

One interesting piece. Since I am on an academic social network, they send me notices when someone googles my name. So whenever I go on RT, I usually have several searches in the next day or two. Today several were from Japan. @Pedro Jesus everyone here tells me that it happens, a lot.

@bo Ah, that I was aware of. But we were talking about censorship which is another issue all together. Every country exercises web surveillance. Even Portugal.

My office is a government office in a city government owned building. They noticed in no time flat when I accessed a torrent site (shame shame) but have not said a word about lurking all day on this site. I have also done several of my RT interviews from my work computer. Others from my home computer, over the power company lines.

If humor is OK, an old post of mine. "Japanese scientist developes new nuclear waste disposal method. The Japanese are using a newly developed method for disposing of nuclear waste.
"There are many subduction zones on the Earth, fortunatly one of them is close to Japan.", said Dr.Hose Minamimoto. "Our plan is to drop the nuclear waste there and let in get subducted into the mantle." When asked how the plan was working out, he said "We are still working on the fine details, for now we just dump it into the sea, but in the future, we hope to put it into barrels and dump it into the sea. When we perfect this procedure, we hope to be able to actually dispose of the material somewhere closer to the subduction zone then the coastline."

TEPCO accepts conditions for state support over nuclear compensationTOKYO, May 11, Kyodo

The government plans to effectively put Tokyo Electric Power Co. under state control as the utility is expected to receive government support in paying massive compensation over the country's worst nuclear crisis at its nuclear power plant, sources close to the matter said Wednesday.

The latest development came as Tokyo Electric decided earlier in the day to accept government conditions for state support, including making maximum cost-cutting efforts, not setting an upper limit for compensation payments in advance and accepting an investigation into its management by a third-party panel set up by the government.

The government is expected to hold a meeting of Cabinet ministers possibly Thursday to decide on a compensation scheme to help the utility and is considering establishing a new institution to deal with compensation payments in the event that they exceed TEPCO's ability to pay.
