  • @all Looks like the French have had doubts about the effectiveness of Zirconium cladding, especially related to running a Mox fuel core: "In the scenario defined as a serious accident, the zirconium alloy used to clad the radioactive fuel will melt, producing hydrogen, which — if it comes into contact with the core’s cooling water — can cause an explosion violent enough to breach the reactor vessel and release radioactive materials beyond the containment building.

    According to a leaked document dating from April 2004, EDF has tried to find a safer cladding material. However, all alternative materials examined so far have failed to meet expectations, Ms. Cadet-Mercier said. Several other “remedy” materials are still under study, she added. "

    Moderator void coefficient, Doppler coefficient and dynamic parameters were evaluated
    to investigate influences upon a transient and accident behavior of a high burnup MOX fuel and
    core. The results are summarized in Table III.
    Generally a static void coefficient of MOX fuel tends to be more negative compared with
    that of UO2 fuel. Consequently increasing a loading fraction of MOX fuel in a core leads to larger
    core average void coefficient. Dynamic void coefficient taking delayed neutron fraction into
    consideration is important from transient behavior standpoints. An increase of dynamic void
    coefficient of MOX core will be larger than that of static void coefficient because of smaller
    delayed neutron fraction of MOX fuel.
    Generally, a transient behavior such as Turbine Trip event will be severe because of larger
    void coefficient. But, since current BWR has fast speed SCRAM mechanism, void coefficient
    increase does not affect a operational limit.
    Doppler coefficient of MOX fuel is slightly more negative than that of UO2 fuel. This will
    moderate a behavior of reactivity initiated accident such as control rod drop accident. A power
    excursion is suppressed by large Doppler effect, and a fuel enthalpy increase will be in low.

    shut-down margin. Because the K-infinity peak value of MOX fuel is relatively low compared
    with that of UO2 fuel, which cancels control rod worth decrease."

    manufacture of the Tokyo Electric Fukushima-I-3 MOX fuel, Belgonucleaire had only produced
    commercial BWR MOX fuel for one client in Germany. Belgonucleaire does not have extensive BWR
    MOX manufacturing experience. Nor can it be said that electric utilities have extensive experience of BWR

But then again, it may take a day or two for English language coverage to penetrate the Japanese media, so we'll see. And RT gave it a very hysterical title on the video, "Nuclear collapse looms? Fukushima reactor #4 leaning" so if that doesn't get attention, what will?
