@veenie , the company must have recorded the basic reactor parameters during that fateful first day. Backups on tapes must exist. Yet, this data has not been disclosed. I am surprised nobody has asked yet. Time for a profound audit.

@Peter Melzer NHK brought this up a few weeks ago, the gaps in data on Mar 11. They obtained a copy from TEPCo and it had big chunks of data empty. The one that Asahi Shimbun "aquired" sounds like it may have some or all of the missing data. Since it has already been leaked I am hoping getting a copy should be easier.

@Veenie They need to get the corporate office out of the loop ASAP. The technicians and engineers at the plant trying to do the actual work are not the problem. It is the suits trying to run what is a scientific and technical issue. I think the GoJ needs to step in and remove TEPCO from the situation but keep the engineers etc on at the plant. The head engineer told the media he had to jump through all sorts of hoops to convince the corporate office to let him put in a temporary tsunami wall around 3 &4. Why is this guy wasting time convincing execs something as simple as a tsunami wall needs to be done? They need to get the technical minds in Japan from their universities etc. working with the engineers and keep TEPCO's corporate office out of the picture.

@Nancy , if the Shimbun has got the report, perhaps you can ask your reporter contacts in Japan whether there is not something like a Freedom-of-Information Act overthere, a legal lever with which one could wrest the data from them.

@Reed, it would be interesting to get a pic from the ocean side of the plant to see if there is small waterfalls coming from the cliffs and pouring down into the ocean. It would not surprise me that is where all the water they can't seem to find is going !!!

Did you get to see that Fairewinds video posted earlier this day ? Gives a technical summary of what is going on with the reactors, and their current status. It paints a rather gloomy picture.

@wtm It would, but I'm still convinced that all the extra water is simply exiting the plant underwater via the "intake" routes. I suspect that's why the coffer dam is still unfinished and they're using that absurd silt fence.
Were the coffer dam to actually hold in the exiting water, then I suspect that it would overflow in a VERY short period of time !

@reed, I wouldn't think so, as the intake routes should have backflush valves on them ??? I would be more apt to say that it is leaking out some how into the ground water aquifer somewhere. That is why I wonder about the sides of the cliff, if any is leaking out there. Many times i would see the TEPCO cam and it looked like there was steam on the hillside towards the ocean, who knows ? Nobody seems to be looking over that way ??? Maybe not even TEPCO.......

@Majjham, since it is so close to the cliff, it would be more logical that it would "leak" out the side of the cliff and drain down into the ocean.

Sorry, I am a bit out of the loop on the Unit 4 leaning issue. Has Tepco or other Japanese authority acknowledged the lean? Thanks.

Regarding the water to the sea, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a submerged drain outlet a couple of kilometers (or more) out to sea. Or why else would they site the facility on the shore like this?

@Albee, they acknowledged both. #4 is leaning, they are trying to figure out how to prop it up, and they have stated that there is a "Drain outlet" from the reactors about 3 km out into the sea.

@ALBLEE Gunderson says he has confirmation from TEPCO about the lean. I had confirmation from a worker at the plant via a reporter that the building is leaning/collapsing. That reporter also told me about the construction company starting work to shore it up. A different reporter told me about it being a big concern of the tech staff at the plant (the instability of 4).

@ALBLEE Major chemical factories have pipes exactly like that to dispose of waste far from their plants. I would not be suprised to see one for Daiichi.

@Albee, Majjham, I really don't think that TEPCO workers have much time to check around the site looking for other problems. The radioactivity is high, plus they have other higher priorities right now. They didn't find the water in the trenches in back until one of the worker probably had to go around the back of the building for a "p". They didn't see the crack on the trench till they tripped over it. Let's set it straight, this is a episode of the Simpsons here !!!
