Zactly my thoughts, @wtm, that's why some posts below I inquired about updated contingency planning now that Tepco has acknowledged core meltdown at R1. They have to fasttrack to planahead assumptions involving all of the fueled reactors at Daiichi possibly experiencing the same coremelt scenario, instead of overly fudging the microdetails and not moving fast enough to avoid getting tsunamied on the macro picture. As I signed off last night, @elainekirk was saying something about TEPCO saying in the Daily Yomiuri that perhaps #2 & #3 had also fully melted down. I could find no reference to it in the Yomiuri this morning. Was anything else discovered regarding that?

@Bo, take the time to find that fairewinds video back a few pages. please see it, it goes over the reactors one by one and the status of each, and the plant, and tells what TEPCO is doing. Very enlightening. Can't wait till next weeks update from them.

@bo We learned today that parts of Tokyo have enough cesium to be highlighted on a Chernobyl cesium concentration map of Ukraine and Belarus.

@Bobby1 thanks. I picked up the gist of that from reading back. Horrifying. As we all know, the population of Tokyo is beyond description. I'm sure that there are over a million babies or toddlers younger than 3 years old.

@Nancy (where did lilly go?) I don't doubt that at all. As an earlier post said (sorry don't remember who) so many people here have a sense that they are not being informed, but also have a sense of powerlessness, there is nothing they can do. The main thing they CAN do, is to protest and put pressure on the govt. to provide timely information. This would be a newly acquired skill, but hey, in a high radiation environment, social mutation can occur more quickly.

@bo Out of mod-mode. :-) I have been slightly surprised by how much the media in Japan is not just repeating the govt. meme. NHK was pointing out missing plant data. Asahi Shimbun had that 100 page leaked document of plant data. It has been two months and the various media outlets (including bloggers, foreign media) seem to be now in unison a bit that they are pointing out the same issues. If the media outlets, internet and watchdog groups could all work in unison it might be a good way to make change.

After watching that video, I will compare the situation to a juggler that is juggling several bowls of acid above his head. He keeps trying to keep each bowl spinning and hoping that it will evaporate, as the acid continues to eat away at the bowl and dowels holding it above his head. He knows that if one bowl leaks on him, he will then drop all the other bowls onto him. That about sums up the TEPCO situation.......

Video stated that TEPCO's plan is : NO plan. They are just a bunch of dutch boys (no offense to the Dutch) running around plugging up the cracks in the dam with their fingers, while watching the dam continue to crack.

Thanks, @Bobby1. This data was for tapwater served by the waterworks utility in Kawasaki, so the sludge in the garbage dump is not related in a direct way. I just posted it as a kind of tangential rejoinder to your information. Heh heh.

I've been struck over and over not only by what appears to be deliberate deception by TEPCO, but by the bad science they use to defend the past and justify their confidence about future plans. Most recently, I was caught by the TEPCO spokesman's statement about the core meltdown in #1 and his 'reassurance' that they believed the hole in the reactor pressure vessel was only a few centimeters in size. In reading about vessel failures and testing, I came across a lot of citations in the literature regarding what happens when a small hole is created, and how it can be enlarged and ablated as corium and steam go through the hole.

@wtm If the storm sewers feed into the same treatment system it could just be concentrations of the small amounts in the dust and rain washed through the sewer system and concentrated in the sludge filtered out.

@Nancy, they had an article on it today sometime, said that the sewers were one of the first to pick it up if it got into the ground water.
