    by elainekirk 5/15/2011 11:32:35 AM

  • @elainekirk -perhaps they ought to bring it to the UK -we're the world's nuclear waste dumping ground after all

  • in fact there is absolutely no progress.
    by Edano 5/15/2011 11:37:04 AM

  • hmmm we had a discussion yday tepco stated that the tsunami arrived 40 min after the quake. here they say: "Approximately one hour later, at 3:41pm on March 11, a tsunami estimated at up to 14 meters struck the plant,..." www.brc.gov

  • @elainekirk Hi, do you mind giving your twitter username so I can follow you!?

    ElaineKirk what is yours Jill?
by Jill in Sweden edited by elainekirk 5/15/2011 11:41:30 AM

  • @Edano Maybe 3:41 was when the biggest wave hit? I believe there were a series of big waves.
    by es 5/15/2011 11:41:50 AM

  • @Edano - possibly both are correct. Witnesses elsewhere reported 2 waves
    by UKVal 5/15/2011 11:41:53 AM

  • the first wave was not the biggest ?
    by Edano 5/15/2011 11:42:58 AM

  • @Edano I believe the 2nd wave was bigger

  • Another thing that has always astonished me are the claims that they never could have planned for an earthquake and a tsunami. Tsunami's almost occur without earthquakes. That is exactly what they had to plan for.
    by bo 5/15/2011 11:46:11 AM

  • 15.41 is is official time of the tsunami hitting daiichi plant
    by elainekirk 5/15/2011 11:49:11 AM

  • @elainekirk : and the official quake time ?
    by Edano 5/15/2011 11:50:26 AM

  • @elainekirk sorry not in case you use twitter more 'privately' - I use it only for things I could as well shout out in a public square... and keeping track of interesting news
No Jill I use it mostly for spreading stuff though I do sometimes have crazy convo's with friends- that is when the temptation to hit the 'unfollow' button may overcome you :)

  • 15:46?
    by bo 5/15/2011 11:52:13 AM

  • 15:27: The first tsunami strikes the plant.[4]

15:46 (approximate): A 14-metre (46 ft) tsunami unleashed by the earthquake overtops the seawall designed to protect the plant from a tsunami of 5.7 metres (19 ft), inundating the Fukushima facility and disabling the backup diesel generators, all but one of which were housed underground, and washing away their fuel tanks.[5] The generators were intended to run pumps to keep the water in the reactor from boiling. (Later) As the temperature rose, a system started that used steam-powered pumps and battery-powered valves.[6]<[br/>en.wikipedia.org

  • Doh! Hit 5 instead of 4.
    by bo 5/15/2011 11:59:53 AM

  • @bo : why do you think here is no japanese on this blog ?
    by Edano 5/15/2011 12:02:07 PM

  • @elainekirk :) ty not a problem (my filtering capacity has increased a lot since I started using twitter)
by Jill in Sweden 5/15/2011 12:03:06 PM

  • @Edano I don't think anyone knows about it. The only Japanese who would find their way on would be English speakers, who are also able to read the English language press and would not be "as" starved for news as non-English speakers.
    by bo 5/15/2011 12:03:58 PM

  • i guess they don't wanna know or they have better sources ...
    by Edano 5/15/2011 12:04:00 PM

  • However, there may be Japanese on here, intelligence agents!
    by bo 5/15/2011 12:04:26 PM

  • @bo : sure tepco has spies here.
    by Edano 5/15/2011 12:04:55 PM

  • I would imagine that there are also Japanese language blogs and sources that we are not aware of. However, I meet and hear from many Japanese who say they are unable to get any information. I think FB is a major source of info for some people.
    by bo 5/15/2011 12:06:03 PM

  • @bo @Edano - I'm sure TEPCO monitors us. They've sometimes used our ideas - like the nappy filler!
    by UKVal 5/15/2011 12:06:30 PM

  • @UKVal : and the duct tape.
    by Edano 5/15/2011 12:07:10 PM

  • And it would be easy to imagine that the concerns raised here about things like the lean, and the smoke, have prompted attempts to control the entry of those issues into the larger dialogue.
    by bo 5/15/2011 12:08:07 PM

  • @bo - yes our convos are often followed by a TEPCO press release on the same topic some 24 hrs later
    by UKVal 5/15/2011 12:11:04 PM

  • A side issue, but important hee, especially in terms of the expat community, is the fact that everyone who fled in the first days, and who took and still take enormous amounts of shit here in Japan, were right. That is why the 16hr issue is very important here. There was anger, very intense anger at those expats who fled. This was based in believing the bullshit that was being publicly stated.
    by bo 5/15/2011 12:11:32 PM

  • @Edano lol! Do you think they'll go for the 'hello kitty' tent too?
    by UKVal 5/15/2011 12:11:48 PM

  • @bo - or perhaps resentment that the Japanese had no such means of escape?
    by UKVal 5/15/2011 12:13:08 PM

  • @UKVal some of that no doubt. But mostly just anger that there was "hysteria" in the foreign press, and that foreigners were "being hysterical" and needed to calm down and respond to the "facts."
    by bo 5/15/2011 12:14:23 PM

  • So the doco I just watched................"Despite a partial meltdown after 33days they have bought the plant under control" *slaps head* Guess they havent updated it with new info................Do not bother watching unless you want to swear alot at the tv..................
    by Angie 5/15/2011 12:14:55 PM

  • @Angie that is all I do when I watch TV.
    by bo 5/15/2011 12:15:37 PM

  • @bo : in the first days we had several japanese on the board asking for recommendations. some of us told them to flee if they had a chance (a car and gasoline), but we had a lot of nuke-apoligists as well who told them to stay.
    by Edano 5/15/2011 12:16:23 PM

  • @bo well there certainly was some hystreia in the early reportings. I suspect that the US advice to its citizens to avoid a much wider area was very unhelpful
    by UKVal 5/15/2011 12:16:35 PM

  • @bo snap re TV watching - I shout at it too.. don't know what my neighbours think!
    by UKVal 5/15/2011 12:17:22 PM

  • @bo Was a complete waste of time! Nothing about the stuff ups! And it was over panic regarding the water in Tokyo as you could drink 100 glasses of that water and not get sick..........even infants! I think I am dumber for watching!
