  • and possibly in 6 too. Might explain some of the delays in sounding the alarm...
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 4:46:27 PM

  • @Veenie thanks for that. So it was closest to Dainii -as 1 other fairly significant quake was a few weeks ago. We don't hear anything about Dainii these days... worrying
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 4:48:09 PM

  • Oh oh, have you heard about a workers death in Fukushima?
by Pedro Jesus 5/16/2011 4:48:42 PM

  • @RBeaner : i really wonder why you say that.
    by Edano 5/16/2011 4:49:31 PM

  • "Around 6:50 in the morning May 14, a subcontractor’s worker felt
    Extract2
discomfort during the work related to water processing (work for
conveyance of equipments) in the Radioactive Waste Treatment
Facilities of Fukushima Dai-ichi NPS. As the worker became
unconscious and did not have a spontaneous respiration, he was
transported to J-Village. After examined by a doctor there, he was
taken to Iwaki Kyoritsu General Hospital by ambulance. In
addition, as a result of the body survey, it was confirmed that no
contamination of radioactive materials was detected.
Later, the worker was confirmed dead at 09:33." www.nisa.meti.go.jp

  • @UKVal The only concern I would have with dry casks, is floor loading. If they were (for some reason) on upper floors, then weight would be a problem. These things require no cooling and are inpenetratable. Even TEPCO wouldn't put hot fuel inside them, you CAN NOT cool them, because they are not designed for that.
    by RBeaner 5/16/2011 4:50:37 PM

  • @RBeaner I agree that casks are safe and not likely to break open. The storing of them in an unapproved and undeclared location is a big violation and very dodgy.
    by Nancy 5/16/2011 4:50:53 PM

  • @Nancy exactly -That's the point I was trying to make
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 4:51:17 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus Hi -ty - some of us may not have seen that. Very sad.
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 4:51:56 PM

  • @Edano why I say what, specifically?
    by RBeaner 5/16/2011 4:51:57 PM

  • They don't store the dry casks in the reactor buildings, the casks are stored in the dry cask storage facility. Those 408 assemblies from a page or so back, of which 148 relate to #4, are contained in 9 dry casks, with those 9 dry casks then contained in the dry cask building, Please see: www.nirs.org Page 9 has the 408, while pages 12 - 13 talk about the facility and the casks.(apologies if this has already been covered, but I've just been wading through a boatload of posts talking about 148 #4 assemblies and where they're being stored)
    by Markfm 5/16/2011 4:55:38 PM

  • the fuel in dfy casks is not at all cold. and- everything in nuke industry is beyond safe. it seems silly to me to state that here. static1.kleinezeitung.at

    by Edano via Static1.kleinezeitung.at 5/16/2011 4:56:47 PM

  • Corrosion over long period of time is a major concern with dry casks. They are not safe if not contained in a regulated and monitored environment. There's is yet no proper facility anywhere around the world where dry casks can be safely deposited over a long period of time. Eventually they can corrode up to a point where leakage becomes inevitable. Facilities to safely store dry casks over a long period of time are currently being built in Europe. I remember one such facility is under construction in Sweden, but I can't remember where the other one will be located.
by Pedro Jesus 5/16/2011 5:00:35 PM

  • @Markfm - yes, they should be in the facility. But read Elaine's post below about 4 (under the table)
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 5:00:45 PM

  • @Edano I didn't say it was cold... I said the decay heat was reduced sufficiently for it to sit there without outside cooling or interference. Half the fuel in the common spent fuel pool is ready for dry cask storage. There it would have protection from fire and explosion and sit there and decay. It's not good for the ten thousand-200 thousand years it needs to sit there, but there is nothing safer today for spent fuel, than dry cask storage.
    by RBeaner 5/16/2011 5:01:10 PM

  • Is there any confirmation of cause of death to that worker?
by Pedro Jesus 5/16/2011 5:01:16 PM

  • @pedro cardiac infraction
    by elainekirk 5/16/2011 5:01:46 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus oh probalby Sellfailed -at least that's the plan. We have dry casks trundling round Englan's railways regulalrly & there was a derailment...

  • @UKVal and what was the outcome of the derailment.... and that wasn't a dry cask for storage, it was a shipping cask.

  • @UKVal it doesn't allow C U M bria or C O C K sure
    by RBeaner 5/16/2011 5:03:46 PM

  • @elainekirk So, there is no association with exposure to radioactive substances or radiation, is there?
by Pedro Jesus 5/16/2011 5:03:47 PM

  • @RBeaner true it was a shipping cask - no issues. They'd demonstrated it wouldn't leak in a famous experiment
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 5:04:37 PM

  • @pedro no I have always assumed it would take a big whack to have immediate effect and that problems are likely to show up in months or years
    by elainekirk 5/16/2011 5:05:20 PM

  • @UKVal in germany, we drail them, too.

  • derail
    by Edano 5/16/2011 5:06:19 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus no confirmation that I've seen -but they were keen to pint out that rad readings were ok
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 5:07:15 PM

  • @all I'm just saying, anything in a dry cask is here, a non-issue. We have alot of real issues, don't be distracted. Those google translated docs of dry cask storage ( DCS) at #4 are ambiguous at best. But the best place for older used fuel (> 1-1.5 yr) is in dry cask, not a SFP.
    by RBeaner 5/16/2011 5:08:40 PM

  • @RBeaner - don't distract then buddy.
    by Lethbridgean 5/16/2011 5:09:49 PM

  • @UKVal So I have seen on the reports. Anyway, exposure to high levels of radiation wouldn't be a cause for myocardial infarction. It can be caused by a range of things but radiation exposure is not one of them, afaik.
by Pedro Jesus 5/16/2011 5:09:52 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus : we found out that the worker died exactly at the time there was a big quake in fuku (6.2 i think, 20 km away).
    by Edano 5/16/2011 5:11:10 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus -I hadn't seen the info on that that Elaine posted below
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 5:11:16 PM

  • Monday morning all, looking at the latest METI stats, it looks like we have a horse race to see which reactor melts through the Drywell. #1 still has high pressure in the RPV (and building again), #2 still high radioactivity in S/C, #3 high temp on RPV seals & high radioactivity in D/W, all water levels are down from what they were at weeks ago.
    by wtm 5/16/2011 5:12:08 PM

  • @Edano High levels of stress can cause myocardial infarction. And there's a lot of stress going around in that crippled plant. That might have been the cause.
by Pedro Jesus 5/16/2011 5:12:18 PM

  • @Lethbridgean sorry, pulling back. I just hate to see us all investigating dead ends, when there are things that need investigating, like why is my avatar called " When you are in deep shit, Hold your head high, and act like you belong."
    by RBeaner 5/16/2011 5:12:37 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus :cardiac infraction was a first assumption by tepco. there were no other reports.
    by Edano 5/16/2011 5:13:13 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus true -poor bloke had only recently started work at Fuku - then the quake
    by UKVal 5/16/2011 5:13:54 PM

  • @Pedro, I had one of those, they are not fun !!!
    by wtm 5/16/2011 5:14:05 PM

  • @wtm i had 2
    by Edano 5/16/2011 5:14:28 PM

  • @wtm interesting -we haven't seen as much steam from 2 or 3 in the last 48 hrs
