  • @Scilla what???
    by UKVal 5/18/2011 1:26:56 AM

  • @UKVal Aha ok thanks :) I thought it was enroute a long time ago and got scrapped or something. I need to make for time for scribble so I can keep up :)
    by NervousinNJ 5/18/2011 1:27:08 AM

  • @DonnerT I've looked at google Earth alot & I think there's things in between
    by UKVal 5/18/2011 1:27:33 AM

  • The unit 1 thing - The tsunami would have knocked the cooling off anyway.
    by Scilla 5/18/2011 1:28:18 AM

  • @UKVal. I'm rambling on about Dean's post below that NHK video said unit 1 operators turned off emergency cooling right after EQ.
    by Scilla 5/18/2011 1:30:28 AM

  • @Scilla A plant worker saw the RPV pressure drastically change quickly. I read it went down fast. I think others saw reports that pressure went up. Either way the worker shut the valve trying to stop something from happening. Then the power went out and they could not reopen it.
    by Nancy 5/18/2011 1:30:28 AM

  • Oh.
    by Scilla 5/18/2011 1:30:56 AM

  • @Scilla I think it was an attempt to respond to that rapid change that then bit them in the backside.
    by Nancy 5/18/2011 1:31:08 AM

  • I figured I'd have to say "never mind" like Emily Litella.
    by Scilla 5/18/2011 1:32:17 AM

  • @UKVal: I need to fly over it again in google. Fun thing to do.
    by DonnerT 5/18/2011 1:33:20 AM

  • Nancy, did you see I did a slow-pan and zoom on the funny-big-yellowish thing www.youtube.com There's a photo that shows more of it, seems to be shaped like a round dome. The close-up on the reactor well in the other video I posted fails to show the lid of Reactor 3 where it should be, although it might have debris over it.
    by Ian 5/18/2011 1:33:23 AM

  • This is a photo that shows the big-yellowish thing (in the exact same location as seen in the video I just linked below). I'm sure I've seen a better photo, but it looks round and the shape and size look like a good match to the reactor lid. www.youtube.com
    by Ian 5/18/2011 1:39:01 AM

  • Sorry, wrong link, this is the photo : cryptome.org

    by Ian via Cryptome.org 5/18/2011 1:39:44 AM

  • @Ian remember that both caps sit down in the well quite a bit. I have seen one image that showed the lip of the reactor well. Of course it was at an angle and such a poor image that you can't see down into the well very much.

  • Night Elaine! Has anyone posted this yet? It talks about the possibility of corium being on the concrete floor of containment vessel in 3 with a simple explanation of conclusions.. www.asahi.com

  • @Nancy, are there high-detail schematics of the reactor lid region? @Edano, on the live feed it's also looking like a nice day there. I always feel sorry for the birds I hear chipping there from time to time, their lives and offspring will no doubt suffer. Not the mention the workers there!
    by Ian 5/18/2011 2:08:44 AM

  • @Nancy It very simply uses pressure changes in 2 & 3 to give us a timeline. I think plausible. For those who care the title of the article is.... No. 2, No. 3 reactors remain volatile; meltdowns suspected. www.asahi.com
    by LM 5/18/2011 2:10:39 AM

  • @Nancy I'm glad you hadn't read it yet..I'm always afraid of being redundant!
    by LM 5/18/2011 2:12:15 AM

  • @Reed, thanks! Great to see major media still following this. @Nancy, you've gotta be right, from what I can tell from available schematics, if the reactor 3 lid was off, the steam would be billowing right out of the top, not streaming out from the edges. But every theory here is at least somewhat provisional.
    by Ian 5/18/2011 2:13:36 AM

  • @LM Never! lol I know I for one miss lots of things so if something does happen to be reposted I think its great!
    by Angie 5/18/2011 2:20:29 AM

  • @Ian Great work on the video. The overlay of the diagram and the video footage was very well done.

    by smoss 5/18/2011 2:21:44 AM

  • @Ian I have to say, that image of #3 is rather horrifying - anyone know how new/old that image is?
    by pj 5/18/2011 2:22:28 AM

  • Whoa, I pop in and the board dies. Great, now I'm not just a threadkiller, I killed the whole board. :/

  • www.huffingtonpost.com Interview with Akira Tokuhiro, Nuclear Engineer: Fukushima and the Mass Media
Posted: 05/17/11 05:28 PM ET "Only the mass media can put the kind of pressure on TEPCO and the Japanese government to bring about major change. This will cost at least 10 billion dollars if not 20-30 billion to clean up. It will take at least 10 years if not 20 and roughly 10,000 people working on the cleanup. The nuclear business is global. This needs an international effort to clean up Fukushima."

  • They just showed a close-up of 4 on the cam. Does anyone have an idea what the bright light is on the left side? It looks like it's coming from within.
    by LM 5/18/2011 2:29:49 AM

  • @pj Hi, people are still here :-)
    by Nancy 5/18/2011 2:29:56 AM

  • It kinda looks like fire when they zoom in, but no visible smoke. (shrug)
    by LM 5/18/2011 2:32:27 AM

  • @LM I'm wondering about that as well. At first I thought fire, but I don't see any smoke coming from there? But I think it looks too orange to simply be a light reflection at this time of day.
    by NervousinNJ 5/18/2011 2:32:43 AM

  • @LM is it the yellow cap?
