  • @RBeaner that is not correct. Look again at the images of the vent stacks. The most northern one has multiple pipes in the tower. That handles the common fuel pool and environmental plant, possibly some other locations. The next tower to the south handles 3-4, the one after that handles 1-2 and then one off at 5-6 for those two units. There are a number of images that show 1-2 sharing a tower.

  • @Nancy I'm not claiming expertise here, but per the pic Markfm provided www.tepco.co.jp There are 4 stacks for 6 plants. I can't remember when each buit, but I repeat my question earlier, Does 1 and 2 have separate control rooms (built diff times), 2 + 3 have combined control rooms and stacks (built together) and 5+6 combined control rooms and stacks, (built together)??
    by RBeaner 5/19/2011 6:51:54 PM

  • 18 vs. 19 May 6:00 plant parameters. #1 -- with the decrease in water injection #1 RPV temps are up 5 and 9C, 102C on one reading, RPV pressure picked up another 20kPa, DW temps up 6C, around 90C, and the D/W CAMS is bouncing, B rising 11 to 36 Sv/hr.
    by Markfm 5/19/2011 6:55:44 PM

  • @Nancy Remember the discussion of combined control rooms for different reactors, and how that could add significantly to the inappropriateness of the casualty response??. In TMI it was supposed that overall # of alarms prevented them from seeing the ONE that mattered (relief valve).
    by RBeaner 5/19/2011 6:56:01 PM

  • Pretty sure the control rooms are paired like the stacks -- 1&2, 3&4, 5&6. The 4th stack is for CSP (and maybe something else near it).
    by Markfm 5/19/2011 6:56:29 PM

  • @RBeaner 1-2 3-4 5-6 are combined in their shared control rooms and vent stacks. The additional vent stack being for the common pool. Picture of 3-4 shared vent tower. www.houseoffoust.com

  • @RBeaner Look to the right of the right reactor, those are admin and other buildings. Plus if you look at the left of the image you can see a bit of reactor 3.
    by Nancy 5/19/2011 7:07:19 PM

  • This is the 4 stack that is the far north tower that services the common pool and other venting www.houseoffoust.com

by Nancy via Houseoffoust 5/19/2011 7:07:56 PM

  • @RBeaner I looked at the pic you cited. From right to left (5-6)shared tower, (1-2) shared tower, (3-4) shared tower, common fuel and others large wider tower with 4 vent pipes. The 4 pipe tower is the furthest left and is left/north of reactor 4.
    by Nancy 5/19/2011 7:09:34 PM

  • Back to 18 vs 19 May plant parameters. #2 shows stable or decreasing values, minor +2C on the HVH return temp. #3 still getting 18 cubic m/hr water injection, shows +5C on one RPV temp, -9C on the other (both at about 114C), DW RPV bellows temp reported down almost 30 at 115C, with HVH return down 10 at 115C, radiation continuing slow decrease. #5 showing stable RPV and SFP temps, 47C and 43C. #6 RPV is down 21C to 27C, while SFP is up 5 to 37C. (Net, 5 &6 aren't showing anything bad)

    by joniver 5/19/2011 7:23:47 PM

  • @Markfm Thats good info...but, I think the upgrades they were talking about was the Hardening of the system. Emergency disharge should bypass the filters. It means radioactivity to the immediate area, but can decrease the results of explosive release
    by RBeaner 5/19/2011 7:25:18 PM

  • ah ok this was the north tower as well.
    by Edano 5/19/2011 7:25:35 PM

  • RBeaner, no disagreement from me. "According to the NYT, the new venting system bypasses filters that hold back much of the radioactivity. "

  • There is a diagram here it repeats what has been found and shows position of control room may or may not be useful www2.jnes.go.jp

  • @Peter Melzer : yep north tower.
    by Edano 5/19/2011 7:28:26 PM

  • @you : well, in fact nancy said "north tower", but isn't it south ?
    by Edano 5/19/2011 7:29:32 PM

  • i think, south tower is correct.
    by Edano 5/19/2011 7:30:47 PM

  • @Edano You are correct, I had the north-south flipped on that. 5-6 are most north with the common pool & tower south

    by Edano 5/19/2011 7:34:18 PM

  • @Markfm Thanks for finding that. The NYT article was the one I originally read but could not find "The new vents were designed to send steam and gas directly from the reactor’s primary containment, which houses the reactor vessel, racing past the usual filters and gas treatment systems that would normally slow releases of gas and eliminate most radioactive materials. "

  • @Nancy : well, they have to pay for your extra hours, not too bad.
    by Edano 5/19/2011 7:39:03 PM

  • @Edano, on the side, the pic shows the flooding of a location quite close to the waterfront. Tepco claims it was taken approx. 15:43. That does not chime well with their notion that the tsunami hit 41 minutes after the quake, that would be 15:27. Tepco is not very precise with their timing.

Water Leak at Japan Nuclear Plant
TOKYO (AP) - Japan's largest power company on Monday found
radioactive water leaking from a nuclear reactor that was shut down
to check for an oil leak, days after an earthquake prompted them to
turn off another reactor at the plant.
