  • Bobby1 To clarify, estimated increase in cancer deaths is not 4 million. The research uses two models: one estimated 66% increase for an increase of 224,223 deaths and the other estimated 416,619 deaths. Summary of the article states: "417,000 cancers forecast for Fukushima 200 km contamination zone by 2061"

  • @Nancy, some other bit of info stuck in my mind: at 2:15, an open pipe on the side of what might be building of #2 is shown in this vid : www.youtube.com . Any idea what it is for? Where is fitter? Would he know?

  • @Peter Melzer I haven't seen fitter in days. Looks like part of exhaust ventilation ducting. I believe each 2 reacters had piared their exhaust ducting.

  • @Hank i've checked two other sites, can't find it... asking Deb to check on the other board.

  • @elainekirk what do you want me to do with it?
    by RBeaner 5/19/2011 3:58:49 PM

  • @Peter Melzer - I saw the broken part of that on 3 and 4 and just assumed it was water drain pip for the roof? Looking at that one on 2 it clearly is not. That pipe is located in the same corner as the sludge tank. I don't know if that would be a vent for the sludge tank though because IIRC to goes all the way to the ground (sludge tank on an above grade level) and it seems rather big to just vent a sludge tank. Now I really want to know what that is!

  • @rbeaner I was hoping it would be useful to dean with his first hrs study and to anyone else who iunderstands it - sorry if I sound vague I just saw it was charts from the time of quake

  • @Nancy I am not positive, but I think all radioactive sources would end up venting from the same exhaust vent. The pipe IMHO is to big to be from a single individual source, like a tank or something. In your house, most drains vent to a single source on the roof, the same economy applies to nuke plant, less separate monitores and less seperate HEPA filter banks.
    by RBeaner 5/19/2011 4:06:31 PM

  • @RBeaner that was sort of my thought, that maybe the sludge tank would run into the stack. So what could it be?
    by Nancy 5/19/2011 4:15:38 PM

  • At least 3 and 4 have a shared vent, as TEPCO specifically stated that -- they postulate that at least some of the #4 hydrogen was actually sourced from #3, that it traveled into 4 via the shared vent.
    by Markfm 5/19/2011 4:19:33 PM

  • @Nancy Can you post the basic picture of the entire site, pre nuke. I think the vents are all paired up.

    by Lethbridgean 5/19/2011 4:26:30 PM

  • @Markfm 1 + 2 have a common vent tower and 3 + 4 have a common vent tower.

  • @Edano so there are only 3 vent towers, I would assume they connect above the buillding?

  • The vent stacks (towers) are connected in pairs. 1-2 share a tower, 3-4 share a tower and 5-6 share a tower. There is also a wider tower that serves the common fuel pool, environmental building and possibly others.

  • It goes against the laws of physics that a gas would flow out of one bldg and back into another bldg. It would ALWAYS take the path of least resistance and go up the vent stack. Plus I have't seen details on any drawing but would be sure that they had check valves to ensure that backward gas flow would never occure. Even if these check valves where not working 100% it would still provide enough resistence to make the gas defianately go up the vent stack and not into the adjacent reactor building.

  • @Markfm beutiful pic, looks like 1 and 2 have their own vent stacks, 3+4 share and 5+6 share, maybe 1+2 built at different times, but 3+4, and 5+6 built as pairs..??
    by RBeaner 5/19/2011 4:36:33 PM

  • @elaine, was the desire to run MOX in #1 confirmed that TEPCO wanted to do this or was it a suspicion?
    by Nancy 5/19/2011 4:37:12 PM

  • there is a jnes doc here that timeslines the whole of the replacement process for fuku daiichi #3 docs.google.com
    by elainekirk 5/19/2011 4:38:06 PM

  • @Lethbridgean the check valve was supposedly broken and 3-4 may have had other avenues that connected the buildings. But that does call into question TEPCO's version of the story.
