  • If they admitted that the nuke plants might make thousands of square mile uninhabitable, they would gain liability.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:08:41 AM

  • Comparing them it's v interesting how similar they are and how well @dean's scenarios above match them
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:09:01 AM

  • @Ralph - er I don't think they can escape (sorry) liability now, the cat is out of the bag.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:10:02 AM

  • So there is never a "Beware of dog"sign, it is always a "Beware of impossible event" sign.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:10:48 AM

  • In fact I think we can work out which of @dean's scenarios happened at which reactor.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:10:56 AM

  • @Ralph - more like 'beware of hole in trousers'
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:11:24 AM

  • Or elsewhere...
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:11:36 AM

  • I think that has happened to everyone at some point Hud :-)
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:12:11 AM

  • @Hi all can I ask a question – if this happen as Bo R is mentioning in this article, that the levels of radiation become so high that no worker can work at the plant at all – I understand that is very bad for Japan - but what can that mean for USA in terms of radiation?

“ It’s possible that the situation may accelerate where the levels of radiation are so high that no workers can continue to work on the site at all. In which case, establishing new cooling systems, having them functional in nine months is a dream. It’s not necessarily bad to aim for that, but I certainly hope they have dramatic contingency plans.”

  • @hi mod - I hope you get my q in soon :)
@Mona as fast as I could! sorry!

  • But when I accidentally dangled for the delight of my 9th grade class, no one had to evacuate.

  • I just put my gym shorts over my pants. Never play ping pong in your street clothes.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:14:13 AM

  • @Ralph - this discussion is getting a bit too technical!
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:14:52 AM

  • @Angie fast as a light ;)
    by Mona 5/19/2011 8:15:40 AM

  • I don't know what Dean and Bo say, but I think it is as bad as it can get radiations-wise. The tragedy is that it will continue for an indefinite time.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:16:00 AM

  • Agreed, 3 lost containment accidents (the accidents that could 'never' happen) so maybe 50 years of leakage into the sea?
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:18:29 AM

  • The longer lasting half-life products still seem to be accumulating.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:18:43 AM

  • Strontium? OMG! That is some bad Sh@#!.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:19:54 AM

  • Yes lots of Cs 134 and 137 in evidence (and that's just the stuff they are telling). Very few details of other stuff like Pu have rmerged.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:20:29 AM

  • No, Hud, it's put there and it is not good news.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:21:08 AM

  • Out...
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:21:19 AM

  • Arnie Gundersen is due to have another of his updates in the next day or so. Given how accurate he has been it should be very interesting.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:21:45 AM

  • IAEA requires it , so most of the data is in English.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:22:09 AM

  • I asked him about the hydrazine, I was puzzled by that.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:22:46 AM

  • BTW those graphs I link to below are the real thing - I think they were accidentally released by Tepco as they took them down after a couple of hours and now only give recent data.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:24:04 AM

  • Well it really is 'try anything' mode really, they have little to lose. In #3 they can't inject H2 so I suspect (and I'm not a chemist|) that the hydrazine may be a desperate attempt to reduce oxygen levels as they can't remove the H2.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:26:45 AM

  • Nothing they are attempting has EVER been tried before at any nuclear plant (or even in simulation as far as I'm aware). This is rocket science stuff, unfortunately without the rocket scientists.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:28:03 AM

  • ? I dunno it is now kinda hidded in the reports. "Fresh water (about 100t) was sprayed over Unit 4 using a Concrete Pump Truck (62m class). (From 16:04 till 19:04 May 13) (About 0.12m3 bof hydrazine was also injected from 16:20 till 18:41.) - The accumulated water inside the basement of the turbine building of Unit 6 (about 100m3 ) was transferred to a temporary tank. (The same amount was transferred on May 13 and 14 between 10:00 and 15:00.)"
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:29:20 AM

  • Sorry typo - they can't inject N2 of course, to drive out the H2.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:30:26 AM

  • They have been doing that for days IIRC, on some of the plants.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:31:07 AM

  • Which can drive the gas temperatures nuts.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:31:46 AM

  • Which I have seen to a degree.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:32:07 AM

  • I'm off out for a while, see you all later.
    by hudebnik 5/19/2011 8:33:50 AM

  • I saw raw data at -120 C gas temperature, which might be an injection of LN2. Or another sensor malfunction.
by Ralph Unger 5/19/2011 8:34:10 AM

  • Hi @ll. I think there was just a sizable quake at the Tepco live cam. It really shook badly this time. Around 1:30 AM PST.
by ms in la 5/19/2011 8:35:51 AM
