  • TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Cabinet adviser Oriza Hirata has retracted a recent remark that low-level radioactive water was dumped from the troubled Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific in April at the "strong request" of the United States, his office said Thursday.

  • TOKYO - A radiation alarm went off at Tokyo Electric Power's Fukushima nuclear power plant before the tsunami hit last Wednesday, suggesting that contrary to earlier assumptions the reactors were damaged by the earthquake that spawned the wall of water.

A monitoring post on the perimeter of the plant about 1.5 kilometers from the No 1 reactor went off at 3.29pm, minutes before the station was overwhelmed by the tide of water that knocked out backup power that kept cooling systems running, according to documents supplied by Tokyo Electric.

The monitor was set to go off for high levels of radiation, an official said.

  • 19, TEPCO announced that two workers entered the 18th day before the reactor building of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Unit 3. Workers entered the reactor building of Unit 3 is the first time after the accident. The maximum dose is 160 per hour - as high as 170 mSv. Likely to influence the future restoration work. translate.google.com

  • At only 2 Km deep, that's unusually shallow. Think they're normally several 10's of Km deep there.

  • @Angie Makes me wonder about that quake - usually the more shallow the quake the more the ground surface damage. At 2 Km that was right on the skin of the pudding, and notably so compared to the others. Not exactly just a light tremor at 5.5 either.

  • @Paul I fully agree.........It will be bad if that is the correct depth those reactors cant handle much more.......... Bbs guys.

  • Hamaoka is toast ! :) :) :)

5 tons of seawater may have entered Hamaoka nuclear reactor

    SHIZUOKA, Japan, May 19, Kyodo

Around five tons of seawater may have entered one of the reactors at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka Prefecture along with about 400 tons of seawater found in its steam condenser when work was under way Sunday to put the reactor into a state of ''cold shutdown,'' Chubu Electric Power Co., the plant operator, said Thursday.

The reactor will not be decommissioned because the utility will dilute and desalinate the seawater in an effort to prevent any corrosion inside the reactor, the company said.

Seawater might have entered from damaged piping inside the condenser, which cools steam from the turbine and turns it into water. english.kyodonews.jp

  • @edano it is madness do companies not factor in the human cost? In every other sector of retail they have to factor people in or lose trade but power companies globally do not have this concern, why is there no competition between them? they all happilly tootle along together to the financial and health detriment of their customers
    by elainekirk 5/19/2011 10:50:09 AM

  • @elainekirk : the nuke industry stands outside of law, governation, responsibility, insurances, competition, control, democracy. this is a unique position in our world.

  • Workers enter No.3 reactor

Workers have entered the Number 3 reactor building at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant for the first time since a hydrogen explosion 3 days after the March 11th quake and tsunami.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says 2 workers in protective suits and carrying air tanks went inside for about 10 minutes from 4:30 PM Wednesday to check radiation levels.

TEPCO says the workers measured radiation of 160 to 170 millisieverts per hour around the door of the containment vessel.

The utility says it would be difficult to start work on injecting nitrogen gas needed to prevent a hydrogen blast into the containment vessel under such high radiation levels.

The utility said the 2 workers were exposed to radiation of 2 to 3 millisieverts.

TEPCO has now been able to send workers into all 3 reactors that were operating at the time of the quake and tsunami. Workers entered the Number 1 reactor building on May 5th and the Number 2 reactor on Wednesday morning.

TEPCO is rushing to make the reactor buildings safe enough for workers to go inside and proceed with the plans outlined in its roadmap to stabilize the reactors.

This includes installing new cooling systems to circulate water leaked from containment vessels back into the reactors and the nitrogen injections.

  • Do this have any utility?? Deploying a borescope would most certainly require them to rejig the pipe configuration and would definately require an entry point to be opened for the borecam umbilical. __ Regardless, I don't believe it would be possible given how many physical constraints there would be in the pipe system - pumps(even stationary) and filters are two things that immediately preclude using a borescope - seems highly unlikely any water injection lines into an RPV would not have at least one filter. - If it was even possible to do that what would they see? The inside of a sparge ring or the annulus between the RPV and shroud? Not that useful. -- If they thought it was possible would they would risk getting an instrument stuck in their only water injection line? -- Clearly what they need is a wireless, rad hard, temperature tolerant , waterproof, steam proof, camera "pill" that can somehow get through pumps and filters undamaged and that can transmit data wirelessly through tons of water, concrete and steel. Perhaps they havn't had the chance to pop down to Akihabara yet ;) --- If they are adding water through the core spray lines the borescope would need to be able to go through a spray nozzle.... www.physicsforums.com Sorry if i waste yours time....
