  • @Nancy, we can only suggest to filter the tap water, exchange the filters frequently, at a third of the manufacturer-recommended life span perhaps, and hold a GM counter to the filter regularly.

  • @Nancy on physic form, only wrote down the enlarged post that talked about the hole, you might have better insite... but the originals are in the pages directly before that are talking about the AIEA (or what ever the letters are) they seem pretty good inlargements, POST #8379

  • @elainekirk Peter was asking about a vent line yesterday, just from memory and (I do have those senior moments!) it seems like he may be on something, I need to find pic of the lower part of building and a report i was reading this week about the vents

  • @Nancy , I got around reading IAEA-TECDOC-844 entitled "Characteristics and use of
urania-gadolinia fuels": www.iaea.org . The stuff optimizes fuel burn at the cost of increasing the WASTE THAT CANNOT BE RECYCLED. Fantastic stuff!

  • The letter from the mother about the situation at the schools in Fukushima is really disturbing me, along with articles about parents protesting and the government basically saying 'we don't have a choice- its either expose the kids to higher levels of radiation, or put their education on hold'.

I'm trying to think practically - what SHOULD the GoJ do? Relocate students and teachers to temporary facilities tens of miles away to continue their education outside of any dangerous areas while they build new permanent schools out in these same areas? Should they install air scrubbers on all the HVAC equipment and tighten up the buildings in-place, limiting outdoor play for the next 30 years? Provide child-sized radiation suits? These are terrible choices...

  • @jay@nancy@all Kan has set a nonbinding target to replace the binding target!!!!!
I resolve to do my upmost to support those parents who want to secure a future for their children !! his 'nonbinding' target only applies to their time in school they will still not be able to walk outside to play on swings and climb trees!! that is not a childhood that is life in a concentration camp!!
And I am above pissed off that the media can print this after ignoring the pleas of parents

  • @fitter , I discovered this vent in one of the heli overflight vids. It seems quite large in diameter and possesses two feeds, one from straight below along the building's corner and one that slings around the southern corner at the level of the service floor. I could not find it on the other buildings. Watch here at 2:13: www.youtube.com

  • @Markfm Misleading headline... "If the new target is achieved, the total dose of children will be less than 10 millisieverts per year, based on the same formula used by the ministry in April."
    by Bobby1 5/27/2011 3:14:06 PM

  • @elainekirk There's also the question of who takes the readings and how often. Rather than offering to mitigate the soil, they need to be planning to relocate all of the affected school facilities to less affected areas long-term, and bussing kids to places where they can actually spend some time outside during their childhood.
    by jay 5/27/2011 3:16:28 PM

  • No disagreement, I just print the headline as-is.
    by Markfm 5/27/2011 3:17:35 PM

  • @Elaine, thanks for the "Letter"....heartfelt, i hope it makes it to the Mainstream !
As for Pm Kan, he is a POS, he could have vetoed the Radiation exposure Limit's, he SHOULD have.I been saying the GoJ is fully in cohurts with TEPCO and the "resign now Letter" just puts it out there, along with the "Der Spiegel" article.it is fully clear, that the Japanese people are seriously getting "bummed".......again i am asking...when will they rise up, it is simply beyond me to know all this and them not fighting for propper actions ?!
    by Veenie 5/27/2011 3:17:38 PM

  • Re radiation exposure, relocation, and the letter that the whole world should read, we must keep in mind that ALL OF JAPAN roughly equals the size of MONTANA. There is not much wiggle room overthere.

  • Oh since Beaner insists on sources, here is the link for the geographical comp: wiki.answers.com
by Peter Melzer 5/27/2011 3:19:31 PM

  • @elainekirk Not to mention that burying the already contaminated soil doesn't account for the continuous release of radioactivity...they are acting as if they have everything under control. And what about the potential contamination of groundwater with burying cesium laden soil? It's a travesty of the ultimate degree!
    by LM 5/27/2011 3:19:52 PM

  • @elainekirk What really strikes me is the question I'd be asking.....Would I want my children to go to school and live on top of an active Superfund Site? The answer is obviously a resounding NO!
    by LM 5/27/2011 3:25:34 PM

  • The main risk for children is internal exposure of radiation. Burying the contaminated soil on school grounds reduces the risk, but every time the wind blows, they are breathing particles that come from non-buried areas, roofs, surfaces that are not on school grounds.
    by Bobby1 5/27/2011 3:27:46 PM

  • @LM They rely on a combination of ignorance, decades of PR, and sheer obfuscation to make sure these dangers can be dismissed as the fears of pathological neurotics.
    by radioguy 5/27/2011 3:27:47 PM

  • @elainekirk This slight of hand with the non-binding is anger inducing. Make it mandatory like the other one or it is rather meaningless. The GoJ needs to give these people in the questionable areas the option to attend another school in a safer area and evacuate or relocate if they choose. They are leaving these people forced to deal with this due to clever govt. red tape

  • From Nishioka's letter: "You, Prime Minister Kan, have neither the passion, determination nor skill to lead the nation. I believe there is more danger in maintaining the status quo than in changing our horse in a rapid current."

He just nailed the current situation of virtually the entire top-heavy world in one sentence.

    by elainekirk 5/27/2011 3:32:26 PM

  • @radioguy If they completely fixed the situation at the NPP today, radioactivity would continue to increase for 3 years, like it did in areas near Chernobyl, as the cesium and other nuclides spread everywhere. This is going to get worse in an exponential manner.

Experts: Leave radiation checks to us
Laypersons just spread fear with inaccurate readings, they say

Measuring radiation levels accurately is difficult for laypersons and they shouldn't panic if their devices show much higher levels than the figures announced by the government, radiation experts say.
