  • Show me a safe design for a nuke plant and I am 100% behind it! BWR and the new ABWR are all flawed so I do not support them.n4 hours before meltdown even with the new ABWR designs.

  • Given loss of power and a Fukushima type event. NRC says that there is a 0% chance of secondary containment failing , we know that out of 3 cases 3 failed. Do you need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that they are dangeruus

  • I once made a radio feature at a UK nuclear plant (in those days they would let you tour the plant, even standing on the reactor cap). It was one of the old Magnox designs, now almost all closed. I asked the station manager what was the main difference between the various types and if there was a tradeoff between efficiency and something else. He said "time - if anything major like a LOCA goes wrong - original Magnox, you've got 45 mins for the people to fix it, AGR 20 minutes, water cooled 4 minutes". He basically said the higher the power density the less chance the opeators have to control it, it would have to be down to automation.

  • @Ralph - personally after Fuku I believe that ALL Mk1 BWRs should be closed immediately.

  • WAIT A MINUTE........i thought TEPCO has been cyphening Water off ???
Well, LOOK at the levels below, to the contrary, the levels are higher than ever before.........what gives?
Rain likely to induce more radioactive leaks

The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it is closely monitoring contaminated water levels in the facility as heavy rain is forecast next week.

Tokyo Electric Power Company is continuing to inject water to cool reactors. As a result, the level of highly radioactive water around reactor buildings is rising.

The company is concerned that contaminated water in the basement of reactor buildings and nearby tunnels may overflow and seep into the ground and the sea.

Rain is forecast on Sunday and Monday because of an approaching typhoon.

As of Saturday morning, the water height is 57.6 centimeters below ground level around the Number 2 reactor and 43.1 centimeters below ground level for the Number 3 reactor.

  • And Tepco are proud to announce that from the 29th there will (probably) be a doctor at Daiichi 24/7 . The fact the dr is being provided by the government is acknowledged www.tepco.co.jp and www.tepco.co.jp
A damaged NPP with >1000? workers and they announce proudly that there will be A (as in singular) dr onsite !!!

  • They were all about 100cm below ground level.but this is HALF......so they didn't get jack out
    by Veenie 5/28/2011 8:14:14 AM

  • @veenie they were due to run out of water storage thurs/fri if I recall so how convenient that they will now have 'heavy rain' and no doubt that circumstances beyong their control lead to further pollution of our/our children's/our grandchildrens... oceans
    by elainekirk 5/28/2011 8:15:20 AM

  • At Chernobyl the big concern was about groundwater contamination, at Fukushima it is a given that groundwater has been contaminated.
by Ralph Unger 5/28/2011 8:16:40 AM

  • @elainekirk No, you mean to tell me they had 50 cm rise towards the top in two days......no way

photoTokyo Electric Power Co. executives apologize to people who evacuated following the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant accident at a shelter in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, on March 31. (Koji Shimizu)

Seventy-three percent of Japanese do not think information provided by TEPCO about its Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, is reliable, far above the 15 percent who said they thought the utility was credible, an Asahi Shimbun survey found.

Of the 34 percent who said they favor nuclear power generation, only 24 percent said they trust Tokyo Electric Power Co.

Asked the degree to which the central government is responsible for the crisis at the plant, 60 percent said the government is greatly responsible, while 34 percent said it holds some responsibility.

The latest telephone survey, conducted nationwide May 21-22, obtained responses from 2,059 randomly selected eligible voters in 3,455 households, with the exception of parts of the three quake-stricken prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima.

  • @veenie I wouldn't tell you that I respect you and acknowledge your logical thinking abilities - would Tepco tell you that ? - Yes -
remember they are doing it to save the world- they are heroes

  • Am I an idiot to think that rain might happen?
by Ralph Unger 5/28/2011 8:28:32 AM

  • Interesting how much reliable info has come out in the past couple of days about what happened, contamination levels in the sea etc etc. IAEA won't be able to say 'didn't know about that'
    by hudebnik 5/28/2011 8:28:42 AM

  • Several terabequrals as to sea contamination, Who knows what a Tera bequral is? I do . it is literally the count of one atom so it is a very small count. But the numbers are huge.
by Ralph Unger 5/28/2011 8:34:02 AM

  • 1 trillion counts is 1 Terabequarel.
by Ralph Unger 5/28/2011 8:35:25 AM

    by Angie 5/28/2011 8:43:44 AM

  • Why do all nuke plant exist only with government backing? None of them can afford the insurance if they had to actually pay it.
by Ralph Unger 5/28/2011 8:45:43 AM

  • @Reed - ty, that makes it seem so simple! It would be good to have something that equates @angies levels to what is being found at pant, in soil, in sea etc
    by hudebnik 5/28/2011 8:46:19 AM

  • or even plant, sorry for lowering the tone there
    by hudebnik 5/28/2011 8:46:46 AM

  • Only the limited liability cap makes them possible, do we who except the liability ever get the profits?
by Ralph Unger 5/28/2011 8:50:32 AM

  • @Ralph - just like the banks, they make the profits, we carry the can when it all goes pearshaped.
    by hudebnik 5/28/2011 8:52:20 AM

  • How many millionaires left Fukushima? I am sure TEPCO shared all the profits from the plant with the residents who now have lost their homes.
by Ralph Unger 5/28/2011 8:53:59 AM

  • Japan takes a shine to renewable energy
    www.washingtonpost.com
"Only 17 of Japan’s 54 reactors are currently generating power, with 22 shut down for planned or unplanned inspections, according to the World Nuclear Association. In addition, two reactors at a quake-prone plant southwest of Tokyo were halted at the government’s request. Nine stopped automatically on the day of the earthquake, as designed, and have remained offline. And the four stricken reactors at Fukushima Daiichi will never again be used for power generation.
Because of the Fukushima crisis, Tokyo Electric Power Co. — which accounts for 27 percent of the nation’s power — has been left with major shortages."
