  • @fitter - It's all about commercial use, we have none, ScribbleLive has some as they're placing ads. But you can embed this in your own website, and then if you accept advertising, you become liable.
by Rob in SF 5/28/2011 1:08:52 PM

  • Embed this meaning this whole feed/site can go in a frame on our own site.
by Rob in SF 5/28/2011 1:09:49 PM

  • @fitter This information is determined when you purchase a domain. You can choose for it to be public (ie everyone can see it and use a service like whois to find out the personal data of who owns it, name, address, phone, etc. A private domain is hidden, you can't see personal owner info. More on that here: www.dynonames.com

    by dean 5/28/2011 1:10:29 PM

  • Copyright is a morass of rules and regs. If you link to a Source Site, like a newspaper and include exerpts or description, that is fine. You are driving clicks to their commercial site. If you link to "joes" blog (a third party commercial site, who is generating revenue from clicks), if He isn't paying or permission of the origional source, that is illegal. IMHO

  • If the source has a 'share' or email feature, couldn't we use it with impunity?

  • @deb.. well this morning the fog rolled in .. it's been burnt off by the beautiful sun.. now I'm wondering do I get more harm from the natural cosmic or the fall out.. because I thought the fall out .. FELL OUT.. decisions decisions..

  • We deal with copyright all the time, and it's a morass. Yes. Mickey Mouse rules. The oldest living zombiemouse in the entire world, and we get NO public domain because Disney buys the government.

"Fair Use" is key. Quotes are OK from any medium, but then it gets tricky trying to decide what's acceptable. Is 80% OK? 60%? 20% That law is too vague to even know.

  • back to rad readings.. Edano,,, it's so pathetic ,, seems like every agency in Japan or other countries either don't have good data.. or the data they susposedly went to get is being kept quiet..
    by dean 5/28/2011 1:17:01 PM

  • There's always paraphrasing...lol
    by marierich 5/28/2011 1:18:33 PM

  • @UKVal That's their issue really. When Napster, and then LimeWire started sharing just link, making it hard to get through to fin the actual files, which were distributed, and one person might only be sharing 42 discontiguous pieces of a 10000 piece file, where's the violation? WHo was over fair use limites?

It gets much more complicated when 'Prior Art" is applied to a musical "feel", or a visual "look".
by Rob in SF 5/28/2011 1:19:47 PM

  • @UKVal I think that is referring to "clipping"an article or picture, even referring to linking (just to a picture), but if you link to the paper site, so when people click on it, they go to the actual newspaper site, giving the newspaper their revenue and credit.. How could that possibly be wrong? The paper put the site there to make money, didn't they??? Can't they just make the issue clear so normal people can follow the law without a lawyer?
    by RBeaner 5/28/2011 1:20:04 PM

  • @dean lmao
    by deb 5/28/2011 1:20:11 PM

  • @RBeaner that's not how I read the article. Rob posted read about the Eygptian . I think thry're trying to clamp down on people they believe benefit commercially from a site that provides links to other sites
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 1:23:17 PM

  • I have to admit, that I am a live cam addict! Not being able to see the reactors for over 24 hours is driving me crazy with worry! Felt much better when I could see what they were doing and slept better. Got my new "bought from son who messed up bad" super computer all set up to record 24/7 and the lights go out! Dang!!!
    by deb 5/28/2011 1:24:04 PM

  • @RBeaner That's why embedding from the original source is preferable. We need to start using standards in quotations from sources that might want to sue us. I use ScribeFire for WordPress because it's as easy as highlighting the extract in the article, using menu or hot-key to Blog this Page", and when you select the page, it puts in a block-quoted extract headed by the link.
    by radioguy 5/28/2011 1:26:36 PM

  • We also need to bear in mind there are ads on this page. we might need to demonstrate we do not benefit financially from their placement here.
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 1:27:49 PM

  • WELL if we are all arrested I hope we can get checked in to the same place so we can collaborate
    by dean 5/28/2011 1:28:23 PM

  • @radioguy good idea -where do you get ScribeFire from
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 1:28:29 PM

  • @dean - don't think I'll be extradited to the US for this -on second thoughts yikes!!!
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 1:29:02 PM

  • @UKVal They are doing that. On the surface. But really, this whole initiative springs out of Wikileaks and the Twitter Revolutions, and now solidarity with the GoJ in their clampdown. It's the old, dying status quo scrabbling with all their strength to prove they're still relevant.
    by radioguy 5/28/2011 1:29:46 PM

  • @UKVal Free fireefox/chrome extension
    by radioguy 5/28/2011 1:30:04 PM

  • @deb I'm a cam addict too Feel really worried when i can't see what's happening -especially with a storm coming
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 1:30:07 PM

  • @UKVal who owns the cam? is the tv station, done without Tepco approval ?
    by fitter 5/28/2011 1:31:19 PM

  • @radioguy I agree it's the status quo trying to hold on. wish they had less power, but can understand the concerns of musicians & artists trying to make a living - ty for link, I'll try it.
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 1:31:52 PM

  • @UKVal Prehaps use the dialectizer www.rinkworks.com
    by RBeaner 5/28/2011 1:31:59 PM

  • @RBeaner ty I'll try both...
    by UKVal 5/28/2011 1:33:14 PM

  • (Sorry, I'm not usually so bitter about the state of government in the world, but we've seen too many examples lately of governments at war with their own people, and trying to restrict access/communication/freedom to hang on to something they don't deserve to be holding in the first place, as demonstrated by their actions toward their own people at the behest of their corporate sponsors.)
    by radioguy 5/28/2011 1:33:32 PM
