  • If what we saw was indeed the #3 reactor exploding and not just the result of a hydrogen buildup in the outer shell, that would sure explain a few things. Like the glowing stuff seen on first air survey of unit #3 and the upwards focused explosion (compared with the unit #1 explosion) + a several other things.

  • TEPCO tackles increasing contaminated water
The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant says water accumulating in the basement of the No. 1 reactor building is contaminated with highly radioactive substances. The utility is battling to stop further leaks as the rainy season approaches.
Tokyo Electric Power Company detected 2 million becquerels of radioactive cesium per cubic centimeter of water in the basement of the No. 1 reactor building.
It speculates that radioactive substances from the melted fuel have leaked from the pressure vessel encasing the reactor core.
Large amounts of contaminated water in the plant's buildings are hampering efforts to contain the situation.
TEPCO has created a map showing the distribution of contaminated water at the plant to prevent a recurrence of the accident in March, where 3 workers were exposed to radiation by stepping in contaminated water in the basement of the No. 3 reactor's turbine building.
Rain showers that began Sunday are causing the water levels in the No. 2 and 3 turbine buildings to rise at a faster pace of 3 to 4 millimeters per hour.
The company plans to set up a cooling system to circulate decontaminated water back into reactors. The system is expected to be set up in July.
Until then, the utility needs to come up with measures to prevent further leakage, such as transferring the water to a new storage site.

  • What's Mirriam Webster Say?? From www.asahi.com , "Although the word "rumor" can refer to groundless hearsay, the screening panel decided that it was "rational" for consumers to refrain from buying and recognized the damages from such rumors as both serious and real." What??

  • Internal exposure concerns
Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission has expressed concerns about internal radiation exposure for workers at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

High levels of radioactive substances have been detected in the bodies of 2 workers at the plant.

After a meeting on Monday, commission member Shizuyo Kusumi told reporters that the organization had concerns about whether protective masks can fully protect workers from internal exposure. She added that the commission would study the two cases based on data to be sent from the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

Another member, Osamu Oyamada, noted the need for comprehensive management of the work environment, saying a better environment should be in place before the summer.

He also said consideration should be given to the effects of the summer heat on workers' health, while keeping radiation exposure to a minimum.

  • @Edano hope you are wrong, but i also thought so first time i saw the explosion on CNN
    by WolfDK 5/30/2011 11:47:17 PM

  • @RBeaner I wonder if 'rumour' is a translation issue -we'd probably talk about concerns causing 'loss of business'

  • @estacion , we must not forget the half-live of iodine-131, if those two incorporated their dose in March, it may have been up to one thousand-times higher than now.

  • @all tbs video about the internal exposure of workers at Fukushima. Hope @dh is around a bit later to help with translation.

    by smoss 5/31/2011 12:04:55 AM

  • @Edano well maybe it's me.. but if there's a fact - like a disaster then to me the 'rumours' are not unfounded - although it may provoke disproportionate or hysterical reactions
    by UKVal 5/31/2011 12:05:51 AM

  • in govj speak the "unfounded rumors" are truth about fukushima.

    by Edano 5/31/2011 12:10:03 AM

  • @Edano True - reminds me of 'double speak'. It's the logic of the statement that eludes me, but I do realise it's trying to ensure a cover-up -although there must be areas of Japan suffering a decline in business where radiation is not so much of an issue (yet??)
    by UKVal 5/31/2011 12:11:05 AM

  • @Edano right, ont know how much they got already

  • @UKVal Could you tell me where you are hearing about the plutonium detected in Ikata, Ehime? It is very close indeed to where we live. There are 3 reactors there, one of which has MOX. MOX fuel has been used since 2010. I actually used to go to the plant at Ikata and teach English to the engineers. Anyway I would really like to know more!

  • Fukushima Daiichi to Appear Live on WebSearch Japan Real Time.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday it will start a live webcast of the nuclear power plant at the center of Japan’s two-month drama.

The video will be shot from 250 meters northwest of Unit No. 1 and will show images of Units Nos. 1-3 in real time, the most heavily damaged of the plant’s six reactors, according to Tepco.

    * Images may be unclear under conditions of strong backlight, bad weather and nighttime darkness.
    * The service will be suspended during maintenance of equipment or other trouble." TBS better keep thiers up!!!
