  • Tokyo Electric Power Co. has been manually pumping water into overheating reactors after cooling systems broke down and much of that has overflowed into basements and trenches. The water is rising at a rate that means it will overflow as early as June 6, Bloomberg calculations from the company’s data show.

Reporting from Seoul— Japan did not properly protect its nuclear plants against the threat of tsunami before the March 11 disaster that caused radiation to spew from the Fukushima Daiichi facility, concludes a preliminary report released Wednesday by international nuclear experts.

"The tsunami hazard for several sites was underestimated," says a three-page summary released by a United Nations nuclear safety team investigating the aftermath of a magnitude 9 earthquake that triggered a nearly 50-foot-high wall of water, deluging the plant.

  • Singapore, June 1: Sergei Belyakov, a scientist who helped clean up debris after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, has expressed his concern about Japanese workers or "jumpers" who are risking their lives to contain the core meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant caused by the March 11 earthquake-***-tsunami.

"I really feel sorry for the situation in Fukushima, honestly," The Japan Times quoted the 55-year-old former "jumper" in Chernobyl, as saying.

  • @All and specifically FITTER, Iv'e spent alot of time here, and I completely disagree with the comment that Tech info has been deleted by Mod. I believe Mod's have done a great job on enabling and "policing" the board. I acknowledge that some posts have been deleted, but not tech or related opinion. I had some of my post Properly deleted because they were antagonistic to another poster in an Inappropriate way. I agree with that. Info shall be free, and I believe that here it is. Don't worry about being deleted for spelling, ranting or opining contrary to other peoples views. It doesn't happen here. Only Offensive or Completely off topic chit chat has been deleted, to the best of my knowledge. Kudo's to all posters and mods alike.

  • @Bobby1 question: why does charlotte VA show on the rad discussions so much, is it on the high side? or is it one of the main monitors in VA?
    by fitter 6/2/2011 1:08:35 PM

  • @fitter Charlottesville VA is one of the CTBTO monitoring stations. The iodine and cesium levels used to be published by the German government, and are now missing along with the German station. The last number shown was from May 7 or so.

  • Nothing new here but, YEAH...fuku tepco.

It has been nearly three months since Japan suffered the massive earthquake and tsunami that triggered the ongoing nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. And yet the utility owner/operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), only recently confirmed that three of the nuclear reactors suffered complete meltdowns within hours of the earthquake, with reactor Units 2 and 3 suffering the most damage. The containment vessels of those two reactors also developed 7-10 centimeter holes within hours of the March 11 quake, which explains why workers were unable to maintain water levels. This shocking news comes after weeks of Tepco repeatedly denying the severity of the accident, followed by slow-coming admissions that this already devastating situation is, indeed, worse than most previous calculations

    by Bobby1 6/2/2011 1:25:05 PM

  • @Bobby1 we have a large number of NPP here in the east.... they have had scrams latley due to the tornado... I am trying to work on the control, legislative path of "safe NPP" as they are not going away anytime soon.. but stopping some recommisioned permits NOW (until further analist is done ) is a remote possiblity... but there is a (not sure if still active) few amuniton bases up that way, plus the colleges have resheach plants etc... want to try and vet or sort data in proper prospective... Rad's arn't what I do for a living, not my field of expertice... could you give me any insite on what or were to look
