  • LM that seems logical but so hard to quantify when so little is known about what is going on down there with the corium blob(s). I wish they would have already core drilled small holes into the area where the corium would be and use fibre optics to look

  • lilly.. keep the cards and letter going to NRC and your representatives. eventually I believe it would be good for the senators and representatives to hold town hall meetings to discuss issues like this. I would like to see it become an election year action item.
    by Dean 6/10/2011 2:14:33 PM

  • good point lilly..hopefully the dry cask storage facilities are above the flood plain which I doubt and are designed to not FLOAT away..

    by lillymunster 6/10/2011 2:15:53 PM

  • JUST A SEC.. lilly
    by Dean 6/10/2011 2:16:06 PM

  • @Dean Oh of course the dry cask buildings are not above the flood plain! They appear to be cast concrete and have outside doors they slide the cask into. I can't tell if these have interior walkways and inspection areas or is just a concrete block with holes in the outside.
    by lillymunster 6/10/2011 2:17:54 PM

  • @lillymunster , I guess you must file a petition like such: pbadupws.nrc.gov
by Peter Melzer 6/10/2011 2:19:44 PM

  • @elainekirk thanks for finding those. I need to do some digging when I get back into those rest areas. They seem to be much more elaborate than I assumed and not 100% sure of the buildings they are using, will have to dig out some plant photos and match things up.

  • @Peter Melzer There is a NE state senator that wants to build a second reactor at Calhoun so they can sell power to other states and make some cash. The last mention was in 2010. I need to do some looking and see if he is still trying to get that done. I guess one reactor in a flood plain isn't risky enough. ;-)
    by lillymunster 6/10/2011 2:21:50 PM

  • lilly .. he is definately still lobbying to build it and most recently has said.. YES we need to proceed it would be foolish not to
    by Dean 6/10/2011 2:22:36 PM

  • on that web link.. there is a header called public meetings & involvement and if you open that you can subscribe to emails..
    by Dean 6/10/2011 2:23:42 PM

  • @Dean Thanks! once people realize what the situation is with these 4 NPPs they get understandably anxious. Any idea why this one guy is so motivated to build an other reactor when they don't even need the capacity? Sounds like he has something to gain out of the deal.

    by lillymunster 6/10/2011 2:28:10 PM

  • @Dean , "impossible" was not the correct word. The operator can deny a NRC request because, it is IMPRACTICAL. I was really surprised. Take this exchange with Perry NPP as an example: pbadupws.nrc.gov

Engineers at Fukushima have started testing a new chemical technology to remove radioactivity from over 100 thousand tons of contaminated water at the crippled nuclear power plant.

In the aftermath of Japan’s catastrophic earthquake and tsunami on March 11th, four of the Fukushima reactors suffered explosions, sending clouds of radiation around. The amount of radioactive water in the damaged units continues to increase by some 500 tons a day.

  • lilly.. that reactor at the Omaha NE VA center as called a TRIGA mark1 reactor and is a very small research reactor.. power is some where around 20 kwatts. usually used for medical lsotope research
    by Dean 6/10/2011 2:31:05 PM

  • @lillymunster , hospitals may run research reactors to produce radionuclides for therapy and diagnosis

    by Dean 6/10/2011 2:34:56 PM

  • @Dean I thought they labeled those as medical use, I think the "research" threw me off. I know some VA facilities have research facilities. There is one I know of that is working on a cure for Diabetes.

  • Triga's were small open pool test and research reactors.. which could produce isotopes for medical uses and also conduct a variety of tests on materials

    by Dean 6/10/2011 2:50:46 PM

  • @Peter Melzer That discussion of impracticality makes sense to me. Should they disassemble the entire lower head, disrupting long existing joints and welds to inspect 100% of a certified weld? The NRC (as regulator) surely attempts to put onerous burdens on entities simply in their lackadaisical use of wording.

  • @nancy have mailed you
    by elainekirk 6/10/2011 3:06:26 PM

  • @RBeaner , I am not an engineer. If measures are impossible, a knowledgable regulatory body should not ask for their execution. Impractical means something different to me, that is it means feasible but difficult to accomplish. The NRC may have to review its practices. If something goes wrong, they will be stuck with it, because the operators were in compliance.
