  • @xxx Depends on where the explosion originated
    by WolfDK 6/10/2011 5:41:34 PM

  • @WolfDK Awesome..4 has been really active for a while but 2 and 3 have really picked up in the last half hour.
    by LM 6/10/2011 5:42:17 PM

  • @LM They sure look angry
    by WolfDK 6/10/2011 5:43:46 PM

  • @WolfDK They sure do...I don't know if it's significant..as it's still dark there, but I noticed that the smoke/steam from 3 appeared to be significantly darker than what was coming out of 4 before it got worse...could just be the lighting though...
    by LM 6/10/2011 5:47:23 PM

  • @LM Hard to say, just hope my lappy does not run out of disc space before its over
    by WolfDK 6/10/2011 5:48:52 PM

  • @all Does anyone know if they have pumpers watering all SFPs simultaneously?
    by LM 6/10/2011 5:48:54 PM

  • I will be away for a while but will keep recording
    by WolfDK 6/10/2011 5:50:57 PM

  • @LM You mean pumping or spraying?
by Pedro Jesus 6/10/2011 5:51:49 PM

  • @Pedro Well....whichever involves getting water into the SFPs...I assume with putzmeisters.
    by LM 6/10/2011 5:53:42 PM

  • They don't spray continuously. There time frame of spraying is daily updated on TEPCO's website (also on the English version), or used to be, I confess I haven't checked daily updates for a while.

  • Japan fears meltdown worse than first thought
Japanese authorities admit nuclear material in the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant's reactor may have leaked into the ground.
In an official report that will go to the UN's nuclear watchdog, Japan says nuclear fuel in three reactors possibly melted through several pressure vessels and into the earth below.

As North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy reports, a so-called melt-through is the worst outcome in a nuclear accident.

MARK WILLACY, REPORTER: For the Japanese the news from Fukushima gets worse every day.

This week it went from a reactor meltdown to what they're calling a melt-through.

GOSHI HOSONO, SPECIAL ADVISOR TO JAPANESE PM (Translation): At present there is damage to the bottom of the reactor container, we call this ‘core melting’ in English. Part of the nuclear fuel has fallen onto the dry earth floor and it's possible that it's still lodged there.

MARK WILLACY: According to atomic experts, this is about as serious as it gets in a nuclear disaster. Dangerous levels of radioactive iodine and cesium have already contaminated the sea, the soil, groundwater, and the air.

  • Nuclear contamination in Japanese tea region
Japanese officials have blamed the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant for high levels of radioactivity detected in Japanese tea leaves.
Radioactive caesium, which has a half-life of 30 years, was found in leaves at a tea factory in the city of Shizuoka.
The factory, in the heart of Japan's tea growing area, is about 360 kilometres from the Fukushima nuclear plant, which was crippled by the March earthquake and tsunami.

A recall of the tea has now been issued, and authorities will carry out tests at about 100 other tea factories in the region.
Exports of Japanese green tea have virtually stopped because of a lack of orders.
