  • @Bobby1 OOH I didn't even think of that when I saw your paper.
    by lillymunster 6/14/2011 4:41:10 PM

  • @Bobby1, Calhoun has a horrible track record. I have not looked for incidents. Do they need to inform the NRC if they had a release? They went into outage in early April. Now I have to wonder if they did a release before or as they shut down? Did the Omaha hot spot mesh with radiation travel patterns in the US or was it an oddity that didn't flow with the other increases?
    by lillymunster 6/14/2011 4:43:07 PM

  • @nancy fingers crossed
    by elainekirk 6/14/2011 4:44:59 PM

  • @lillymunster It sort of stuck out , it had higher increased beta than Sacramento CA in March.
    by Bobby1 6/14/2011 4:45:18 PM

  • @Bobby1 Sacramento was on one of the pathways of radiation wasn't it? Someone mentioned to watch for NPP trying to release radiation while FUKU was spewing to avoid detection. Any ideas what might flag the Omaha data as coming from Ft. Calhoun rather than Fuku?

@Elaine, The Platte river joins the Missouri past Ft. Calhoun but before Cooper NPP. I have not researched much into Cooper's siting or flood plan but they may end up getting more water than planned. Platte is now considered a flood worry also.

    by elainekirk 6/14/2011 4:51:32 PM

  • @lillymunster It's hard to prove anything, because Chernobyl and now the radiation patterns in Japan tell us that we should expect localized hot spots. Still it's possible that there was already an issue at Calhoun.
    by Bobby1 6/14/2011 4:52:34 PM

  • @Bobby1 I am not sure if Omaha would make a natural hot spot ie: a valley, location where winds converge etc. I will probably do more digging on Calhoun as I have time. That plant really has issues and the flooding is just pointing out what a risk it is.

  • @Pedro Jesus , I do not remember that he ever owned a piece of any of these companies. You could not do that legally as a member of parliament and a holder of a ministerial portfolio. However, he was an outspoken supporter of the expansion of nuclear power in his state and helped these companies with licensing and perhaps also with government-backed start-up financing. He is the reason why the Kraftwerksunion (KWU), the German equivalent of Areva, built its headquarters in the state of Hesse. The nuclear industry supported his party, the FDP, with campaign contributions (he was the chef of that party in the state of Hesse). Unfortunately, the wiki just says that "he rallied for .... the use of nuclear energy." That puts it mildly.

  • @lillymunster Oh, yes I was going to suggest that it be put on the website, would appreciate it.

  • @Bobby1 Will do, wanted to make sure that was your intention and we had permission first. Should have it up before I have to dash out of the office here in a bit.

If they had, the agency would have known that in 1988 the German government charged NuKEM with taking more than $10 million in bribes and payoffs for illegal shipments of weapons grade nuclear material to Pakistan and Libya.
The investigation ended without convictions after the NuKEM executive in charge of shipping nuclear materials committed suicide in jail. "

    by elainekirk 6/14/2011 6:05:31 PM

  • @Edano , the people in charge at the time were obsessed with economic growth as a tool to fight unemployment. There was a clear attempt to stick Karry's assassination on Fischer. It remains conjecture, since they never found the murderer. Thanks to Fischer and friends you can swim in the river again today without the act being considered attempted suicide.

  • I don't know if this was already posted. I just watched a 1 hour video in which "Experts discuss the relationship of energy with geopolitics, modernity, and the environment, as well as sources of clean and renewable energy". It's on the CFR website - they met on June 8, 2011. Since they state that "distribution... is expressly prohibited without the written permission of the copyright owner...", I won't put a link. I think you'll be interested to hear what they have to say. You can find it by searching for [ cfr "the future of energy video" ] - without the brackets.

  • @Edano Looks like Raymont started there after the 80's incidents. Did Enertech have involvement in the same dirty dealings? Still very concerning, corporate mentalities don't change fast. Corruption in the 80's could just be the same corruption in the 90's with a desire to not get caught again.

  • The ‘hotspots’
Nakamura still can’t accept that his crisply cut field of deep green tea bushes south of Tokyo has been turned into a radioactive hazard by a crisis far beyond the horizon.
“I was more than shocked,” said Nakamura, 74, who, like other tea farmers in Kanagawa has been forced to throw away an early harvest because of radiation being released by the Fukushima Daiichi plant 300 km away.
“Throwing way what you’ve grown with great care is like killing your own children.”

  • "The Kurion team which has remained in stealth since its inception some years ago, quickly mobilized at the request of senior industry officials in the US and Japan. It is widely expected that the size and scope of the Japanese situation at Fukushima will be larger than the US own defense clean-up efforts from pre and post cold-war bomb-making sites such as Hanford–and may take as long as 30 years.
Currently nearly 25%, 1 in every 4 dollars spent by the US Department of Energy is spent on nuclear-waste cleanup, an understandably widely underreported fact, and arguably the most pressing environmental problem in the United States." blogs.forbes.com

  • ah, finally a lot of info about kurion: www.greentechmedia.com

"Kurion's management includes experts from both the nuclear and glass industries. The CEO is John Raymont, the former CEO of Nukem, an unfortunately named company that provided nuclear waste management services for 25 years before being acquired in 2007 by EnergySolutions.

The vice president of technology is Gaetan Bonhomme, a former senior research engineer at French glass and industrial giant Saint-Gobain. Josh Wolfe, a venture capitalist with Lux Capital Management, is the chairman.

The advisory board includes Patrick Moore, the Greenpeace founding member turned nuclear advocate. Moore is the co-chair, along with former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, of the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition, a lobbying group for the nuclear industry."

  • @Edano , I used to see him play socker in the park on Saturdays when I walked home from my job. In my mind, he turned out to be a fine Secretary of State (Aussenminister). You should read that little book he wrote on losing weight and running a marathon in one year. He held the portfolio for environmental affairs in the State of Hesse when Chernobyl happened. His comment on this time was that he felt restricted by what he could do in his role as Minister of the Environment and wished he could have done more.
