  • @Edano, hey Edano, I saw Pedro's and your digging into NUKEM. As I recall Alkem and Nukem were the pet projects of one Heinz-Herbert Karry de.wikipedia.org economics minister of the State of Hesse in the seventies. Karry's fate is the stuff of John LeCarre plots. Der Spiegel published an in-depth article on the history of these companies and their business plans in 1987: www.spiegel.de . I post the links to the German versions. I hope Google may translate for Pedro and the English-speaking crowd.

peter, i unstuck your post :)

    TOKYO —
Japan’s labor minister said Tuesday he has ordered Tokyo Electric Power Co. to relieve workers involved in efforts to contain the nuclear crisis at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant of their duties if their preliminary radiation doses for internal exposure exceed 100 millisieverts.

  • @lillymunster : seems so "Enertech, a business unit of Curtiss-Wright Flow Control Company, has been committed to the nuclear power industry since 1967, with the development of the first nuclear qualified hydraulic large bore equipment snubber."
snubbers invented by Raymont, i suppose.

    by dean 6/14/2011 8:38:20 PM

  • @dean : maybe they need more nukes on mars, they are clean and safe ?
    by Edano 6/14/2011 8:41:52 PM

  • it's kind of crazy what scientist can get off on ... maybe sell fuku to the martians for spare parts..
    by dean 6/14/2011 8:43:19 PM

  • @dean ah but look at the research grants aka taxpayers money they will get to fund that eh? and what do they say caused it? all the spaceships the martians visit earth in?
    by elainekirk 6/14/2011 8:47:51 PM

  • Objects can become radioactive near criticalities. For example, metal items near the SL-1 criticality became radioactive:

"radiochemists examined the gold buckle of one victim’s watchband and a tiny screw in a pocket cigarette lighter. They found radioactive gold-198 and copper-64. Only neutron capture could have created such isotopes." www.inl.gov

The fact that they became radioactive was considered proof that SL-1 went critical. So could the reported high-dose radioactive concrete from Unit 3 be evidence that Unit 3 involved a criticality? Perhaps metallic elements within the concrete could, by neutron capture, become radioactive.

  • it is hard to understand, nukem, rwe, gne .... here is info on raymont's appointment at nukem:
"Columbia, SC -- After three years as President and CEO of NUKEM Nuclear Technologies Corporation (NUKEM), Mr. Ruediger W. (Rudy) Koenig will take on new responsibilities as Managing Director of GNB GmbH, at GNB's worldwide headquarters in Essen/Germany, effective July 1, 1999.His responsibilities at NUKEM will be transferred to Mr. John M. Raymont, Jr.
His mission accomplished in the U.S., Mr. Koenig is turning over a company with a well-defined growth strategy to Mr. Raymont.Based on the important contributions Mr. Raymont has already made as a senior member of Mr. Koenig's management team, we feel very comfortable placing the responsibility for implementing NUKEM's growth strategy in Mr. Raymont's hands." www.zoominfo.com

  • @Ian thank you very much ! :)
    by Edano 6/14/2011 8:52:39 PM

  • Ian, metals, concrete etc. that is adjacent to the reactor core can become irradiated and give on intense radiation or that of different levels. One worry in nuclear plants is to monitor the rad levels between the reactor pressure vessel and the surrounding concrete from not only the flux levels but also the temperatures..

  • @RBeaner: Regarding the graph gurrgoro.sakura.ne.jp Translation: This is a graph of radiation in the air in Ibaraki Pref. (third tap at top is for Kanagawa, fifth Fukushima). Data from fifteen locations in pref. that is updated ever 120 seconds over time top line is for Tsukuriya, Hokota, next is for Hitachi and the black line for Tsukuba (KEK). Orange (0.171) is avg. for Japan, Pink (0.274) for avg. worldwide. The unit and dates are obvious. They offer a email registration service that will notify is there is a 10% increase in rate or sustained detection of 2 hours or more, also tell rain fall conditions.

  • Congress hears report on nuclear agency chairman
Washington (CNN) -- In the days after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan, Gregory Jaczko appeared frequently on television as the calm, steady hand of the U.S. nuclear power industry.
But at a hearing Tuesday on Capitol Hill, critics painted a different picture of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman, saying he ruled by intimidation, yelled at his staff, was manipulative and -- in one key case -- withheld information from his fellow commissioners in order to achieve his goal.
And Congress members dickered over whether another word can be used to describe Jaczko's actions: illegal. www.cnn.com

  • @dh Thanks dh the origional linked graph covered last nights midnight to 2AM steam show and showed an uptick in rad, I guess the link changes with time. This graph is now not applicable. Oh Well:)
    by RBeaner 6/14/2011 9:33:26 PM

  • Hi all @RBeaner I've also noticed a change in the color of the smoke/steam coming out of the units both day and night the last 3 or so days. It doesn't seem to be mere steam..it's grey to black in color now.

    by elainekirk via Tepco.co.jp 6/14/2011 9:50:15 PM

  • @RBeaner: You're welcome. I was following the discussion on the steam/fog image on the cam from last night. The graph from last night was erratic but only for Tsukuba and you might have noticed not on the Fukushima Pref. graph (fifth tab at top), where it would have been more pronounced, so I would assume there was no spike in radiation detected.
    by dh 6/14/2011 9:51:12 PM

  • @elainekirk What is the laser scan?
    by lillymunster 6/14/2011 10:08:30 PM
