A string of autopsies -- political, regulatory and technological -- loom over the corpse of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The media, however, has already begun its self-examination and it’s not a pretty picture. www.cnngo.com

  • RWE NUKEM Awarded Nuclear Waste Processing System For Power Station
    June 24, 2005
"We are proud to serve Mexico's only nuclear power plant and look forward to a good and close working relationship with our customer," says John M. Raymont, President and CEO of RWE NUKEM Corporation.
RWE NUKEM Corporation provides safe, compliant, and cost-effective radioactive waste management solutions through the innovative application of proven technologies. Headquartered in Columbia, SC, the company operates branch offices in Oak Ridge, TN and Richland, WA. RWE NUKEM Corporation is a member of the RWE NUKEM Group, an international group of radioactive waste management, decommissioning and fuel cycle service companies formed in 1960 with about $400 million in sales and 1,100 staff. www.poweronline.com

it seems John Raymont turned nukem from a criminal group into a (clean ?) radioactive waste management. but what did he do from 1988-1990 ?

  • @Angie I haven't been around as much today. TEPCo did a data dump related to the TEPCO tents and medical conditions. The Kurion investigation Elaine mentioned has proven pretty bizarre. Like the Nukem executives selling nuclear material to Pakistan and Libya.
Lots of questions about who got preventative iodine and who didn't. They are going to put dosimeters on kids near Fuku in September.
    by lillymunster 6/14/2011 10:51:36 PM

  • OIh, cool you got Bobby's white paper on the site .GOOD choice.^5
    by Veenie 6/14/2011 10:53:11 PM

  • I could not get the TEPCO zip files to open either. They are windows media videos but they are corrupted or something. If anyone gets them to work let me know.
    by lillymunster 6/14/2011 10:55:15 PM

  • @lillymunster Thanks! Sounds interesting about Kurion! Oh those poor kids by why wait till then??? is there a reason for that? how scary for the kids if the things go off! lets hope its explained to them in a way that is not scary!
@elainekirk Thanks I shall read with my coffee!

  • back.. I had stepped away.. will read below and answer questions
    by dean 6/14/2011 10:56:16 PM

  • @Angie My question is why not now, even that is a bit too late for all the radiation those kids were exposed to in March & April.
    by lillymunster 6/14/2011 10:56:43 PM

  • ian.. I translate that rad reading to 90 REM.. which seems high to me but, if it had been next to an extremely high field it's feasible..

  • @lillymunster I wonder the same thing too! And I have heard Bo talking about the stigma attached to rad issues there........wonder how this will go down in that regard!

David McNeill: Who's telling the truth on the Fukushima meltdown?
...We might also cite the example of MOX fuel and plutonium, a substance so toxic “that a teaspoon-sized cube of it would suffice to kill 10 million people,” in Reactor 3 at Fukushima.

Newspaper and TV reports in Japan essentially banished the words from their reports. MOX is also used in the Hamaoka nuclear plant, which, until Prime Minister Naoto Kan ordered it shut last month was largely unknown to ordinary Japanese citizens...

  • Hi all! For those interested in the potassium iodide issues I found a little gem from the CDC.. How does KI work?
The thyroid gland cannot tell the difference between stable and radioactive iodine and will absorb both. KI works by blocking radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid. When a person takes KI, the stable iodine in the medicine gets absorbed by the thyroid. Because KI contains so much stable iodine, the thyroid gland becomes “full” and cannot absorb any more iodine—either stable or radioactive—for the next 24 hours.

  • @dean, thanks, but not sure what you mean by 'feasible'... that the level of radioactivity of the debris reflected the normal radioactivity of Unit-3 concrete before March 11 or that the level might be what would result from a criticality at Unit 3?

  • Lawyers to form anti-nuclear national group

Dozens of lawyers are set to form a national group next month in response to the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. They hope to file suits this autumn to demand the suspension of nuclear power plants across the country.

In the past, lawsuits were filed seeking the repeal of state approvals to build nuclear plants. Plaintiffs won in some trials at lower courts. One such case is the Shika plant in Ishikawa Prefecture in 2006.

But the higher courts rejected demands by plaintiffs in all cases, saying that nuclear power plants in Japan are safe.

Despite this precedence, the Fukushima accident has prompted more than 40 lawyers to organize the first national group of its kind on July 16th to demand the halt of nuclear plants around the country.

The group plans to charge that current state safety guidelines for nuclear plants are seriously flawed. They say the directives for operators do not take into account the possibility of a total power loss for many hours.

The March 11th earthquake and tsunami knocked out all electricity sources at the Fukushima plant that prompted what experts believe are core meltdowns.

  • Ian, the first case was a dose to the concrete through an extended length of time if it was located close to the reactor (which I sort of doubt) or the spent fuel pool ie: a piece blown off, the second case would be the result of an acute dose received quickly perhaps from the rad levels released from a criticality. the number seems high but those are the two possibilities I can think of
