  • NUCLEAR CRISIS: HOW IT HAPPENED / Time needed for fresh start of N-power policy www.yomiuri.co.jp
On May 19, about two months after the Great East Japan Earthquake, plaintiff lawyer Hiroyuki Kawai firmly delivered his opening argument in a lawsuit seeking to have Electric Power Development Co. suspend the building of a nuclear power facility in Omamachi, Aomori Prefecture.
"Referred to as the 'boy who cried wolf,' we were accused of discussing something that didn't exist. But it's now clear we were right [to be concerned about the dangers posed by nuclear power plants]"

  • @Reed - Insane how the used to just let it flow over the ground when they couldn't cap it. Texas tea.

  • As ES has said in a deleted post this morning, mods must be ashamed by they have done. I plenty agreed with him and want to add there isn't fun to post anymore here. This board has become a TEPCO style report where citizens are trated like cattle because they have not the little delete button Great kings for a dwarven kingdom!! Bye.
    by estacion 6/17/2011 12:04:09 PM

  • Well, We should just try to stay on topic, with minimum humor :)
    by FradyKat 6/17/2011 12:04:37 PM

  • Tea please. I actually am going to make toast. Nuclear on-topic toast though. BRB.

  • @Rob Thomas Microwave the toast - very nukish.

  • Morning! Has anyone figured out the water treatment game? Can they actually remove most of the radiation or only a small amount? What will they do with all that water in the end? It is going to look like a shipping yard if they put it all in those metal boxes
    by lillymunster 6/17/2011 12:07:15 PM

  • @nancy @reed @rob have gathered a lot of it together but there asnt been anything from tepco on how they have solved the leaks, there is pics in abundance but nothing to say what where or how www.tepco.co.jp
    by elainekirk 6/17/2011 12:10:33 PM

  • @lillymunster Last numbers I remember was 1200 ton capacity, with a 500 ton daily usage on the reactors. So, 700 ton net difference for treating standing water.
    by FradyKat 6/17/2011 12:11:15 PM

  • @FradyKat have they admitted what they are going to do with it in the end? Will they dump it in the sea?
    by lillymunster 6/17/2011 12:19:07 PM

  • @lillymunster - They'll end up burying it I betcha.
by Rob Thomas 6/17/2011 12:20:21 PM

  • @lillymunster I haven't heard anything in regards to that. Or which radionuclitides are actually filtered out or not.
    by FradyKat 6/17/2011 12:20:56 PM

  • @lillymunster But id it is low-level waste, they might just put it into the ocean. Depends on their safety regulations and the quantities.

  • Failure Guru Probing Japan’s Nuclear Catastrophe for Lessons Not Culprits www.bloomberg.com
"Tokyo Electric is now the subject of Hatamura’s next study. He was appointed by Prime Minister Naoto Kan last month as head of the 10-member team to conduct an “impartial and multifaceted” investigation into what went wrong at the Fukushima nuclear plant and how to prevent a repeat.
The Failure Knowledge Database that Hatamura set up has studied 1,175 accidents using a method that focuses on design flaws, human error and how designers fail to see future changes in use.
Hatamura’s database has a case study of Tokyo Electric and its falsification of nuclear plant maintenance records, which the utility known as Tepco admitted in 2002. The study concludes the faked reports resulted from lack of quality control and proper risk management.
“We want this study into Fukushima to be something valuable 100 years from now,” he said this month. “This accident not only affects Japan but also people in the rest of the world.”

  • @FradyKat That is my worry, what level will it really be and what will be filtered out and what left in. If they filter the cesium but leave plutonium and americum and dump it in the sea it is still a problem.

  • Fukushima is a Mobro 4000.
by Rob Thomas 6/17/2011 12:26:33 PM

  • @lillymunster I think I read something about a 2-step process, one for cesium, one for plutonium. But I can't remember exactly what was said, sorry :(
    by FradyKat 6/17/2011 12:27:10 PM

  • @lillymunster Also, standing time is a parameter of the equation. As it sits, the half-lifes of many things deteriotate until they are stable.
    by FradyKat 6/17/2011 12:28:35 PM

  • Luckily Pu-239 has a half-life of 24000 years.
by Rob Thomas 6/17/2011 12:29:42 PM

  • @Rob Thomas I tend to feel the amount of Pu-239 is 'moderately low', because normal fission has been stopped (some chugging still happens) and it is heavy so gravity with assist in condensing it into bottoms of tanks so they can better isolate it in separate containers.

  • @Rob Thomas the governor of the prefecture is going to fight the plan to bury the plant material in Fuku. Not sure where they would take it. How much of the region will be unusable?
