  • Does anyone remember this? Some reporter from the US or UK on the day after the quake went to Fukushima with his camera guy, got out of his car and started running around in front of the front gate. It was all over broadcast news in the US that day. Trying to figure out what the guys name was or who he was with.

  • Hi ALL, hope this hasn't already been posted. "The accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant following the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of March 11 quickly worsened and spun out of control because the U.S.-styled design for its emergency power sources had been adopted without modification 40 years ago--a source at Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant operator, told The Asahi Shimbun."

  • hi @fitter,,, long day ... I had to stop 4 times for seal coating...
    by dean 6/17/2011 1:41:55 AM

  • @Nancy, I have had time to check the seismic improvements undertaken by Tepco on the Simply Info documents page you kindly provided. I am not a seismologist by any means. However, I observed the following:
In the stability statement of the appendix to the Press Release ( www.tepco.co.jp ) on their seismic investigation after the Niigata-Chuetsu-oki Earthquake of 2007, Tepco compares two acceleration vs. frequency spectra. One is the design basis spectrum for Fukushima Daiichi unit 1. The other is the spectrum recorded at Kashiwasaki Kariwa NPP during the Niigata-Chuetsu-oki Earthquake. I presume the company believed that the design basis spectrum for Fukushima Daiichi unit 1 could be used as reference for the earthquake spectrum measured at Kashiwasaki Kariwa NPP. Vertical lines indicate what I presume are the resonance frequencies for certain reactor parts. Intriguingly, the actual earthquake produced roughly the greatest difference in acceleration from the design basis at the resonance frequencies for FUEL BUNDLE and SHUTDOWN COOLING SYSTEM PIPE at 0.25 cycles/s.

Roughly equal or higher accelerations can be found at greater 0.40 cycles, but no resonances are provided.

P.S: The second link on the Simply Info document page does not work.
