  • Kids will get the message: TOKYO, June 18 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Studio Ghibli Inc. has displayed an anti-nuclear power banner at its Tokyo head office at the initiative of noted animator Hayao Miyazaki.
The banner, placed on the roof of the building in Koganei, western Tokyo, since Thursday, reads, "Studio Ghibli wants to create movies using electricity without nuclear power plants."

The staff drew the message and illustration on the banner after Miyazaki proposed that they should "express a candid feeling," according to the animation studio.

Miyazaki had said in a press conference in late March on the studio's upcoming movie "Kokurikozaka Kara" (From the Kokuriko Hill) that he believes Japan will overcome its difficulties, expressing gratitude for the workers struggling to bring the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant under control.

In a separate episode last summer, the studio withdrew its animation goods from a shop selling them inside a facility promoting the safety of the Fukushima Daini plant in Fukushima Prefecture.

    by bo 6/19/2011 2:40:35 AM

  • @bo very interesting the animation studio one.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 2:43:01 AM

  • @lilly Studio Ghibli makes the most high impact anime in the world, this is a good sign in terms of raising awareness among kids. Not that they will see the banner, but it may be a precursor to Studio Ghibli weaving the message into anime. And as any of us with kids or grandkids knows, Japanese popular culture is sweeping youth culture world wide.
    by bo 6/19/2011 2:46:39 AM

  • @bo I'm familiar with them. The arts can do things to get a message through that others can't. :-)
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 2:47:49 AM

  • @lilly a lot of my own academic work focuses on just that. In considering the nuclear culture of the 1950s I argue that while most people didn't grasp the specifics of the dangers of genetic mutations from radiation exposure, everyone understood a 50 foot tall spider bent on destruction.
    by bo 6/19/2011 2:49:17 AM

  • Hi Bo! I love that Studio Ghibli is getting involved. My kids and I have always loved 'Spirited Away' and Miyazaki's other films. I can totally see him incorporating the anti-nuke theme. There's hope yet!

    by bo 6/19/2011 2:50:43 AM

  • @LM hi! I agree, this is a good sign for the long term messaging. Their work is absolutely wonderful!
    by bo 6/19/2011 2:51:08 AM

  • And Studio Ghibli is one of the most highly respected culture producers in Japan, a country where most of the manga is purchased by adults.
    by bo 6/19/2011 2:51:47 AM

  • @Bo I completely agree. Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki are beloved here in the US as well, and I can see them spreading the message to kids and adults alike.
    by LM 6/19/2011 2:53:59 AM

  • @LM so much of their work is about social issues, it would seem hard to imagine them not working the theme into future anime. Nuclear themes are very strong in a great deal of Japanese anime and manga. I know of several scholars whose work focuses exclusively on this theme.

    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 3:00:01 AM

  • @Bo Given what we're seeing with a lot of the plants in Japan I think we'll be seeing an even stronger anti-nuke message in anime. I look forward to it!
    by LM 6/19/2011 3:00:12 AM

  • @Veenie I love the use of 'slightly'....ugh.
    by LM 6/19/2011 3:00:51 AM

  • I can see where shareholders would not want that risk on their investment.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 3:01:40 AM

  • That's why i BOLD marked it......i mean really c'mon, slightly is catscan background..not a nuke graveyard
    by Veenie 6/19/2011 3:02:02 AM

  • @Veenie so they still couldn't get the humidity down and use the air scrubbers and this is 'Plan B'. Probably have the same plan b for the rad water they can't purify, eh?
    by M.I.A. 6/19/2011 3:02:02 AM

  • So they are putting up tents to keep radiation contained but they need to vent the buildings frequently. Anyone see a problem here?

  • @Bobby1 Thanks for finding that! Looking at the first chart it looks like the 15th and 20th had big spikes. 15th I think was the day 3 blew. Was there any other event on the 20th other than 3 going to atmosphere pressure?
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 3:11:36 AM

  • @Angie G'day
    by bo 6/19/2011 3:13:22 AM

  • @lillymunster I take it you mean March... the event on the 20th has shown up on other charts too, I don't know what happened then.
    by Bobby1 6/19/2011 3:13:57 AM

  • @bo, if you happen across something in online media about the studio ghibli happenings can you let me know where to find it? I checked their English language page and it didn't have anything in their News section.
