  • @bo Hi ya Bo!
    by Angie 6/19/2011 3:15:02 AM

  • @Bobby1 Yes, March. I will make a note to see if there were other events reported on that date. If 3 losing the last of containment pressure made that spike that sounds significant.

  • TEPCO: cleanup system could take time

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it may take several days before a system to decontaminate highly radioactive water accumulating in the facility can be restarted.

Tokyo Electric Power Company put the system into full operation on Friday night, but had to halt it 5 hours later as the radiation level of a cesium absorption device rose higher than expected.

The device is also designed to remove oil and technetium.

TEPCO says it may have absorbed larger-than-expected amounts of radioactive materials along with oil. The utility is now working on measures to solve the issue.

TEPCO says the effort will require time. In addition, depending on the situation, it may have to reconsider the working of the entire system and examine the effect of radioactivity emitted from nearby pipes.

There are concerns that the highly radioactive water may overflow in around one week if no measures are taken.

  • I think, it is safe to say, that they have at most 2 days left, than it's OCEAN time again
    by Veenie 6/19/2011 3:18:37 AM

  • @Veenie I still don't understand why they didn't start digging some lined holding ponds. There are already ocean problems and they haven't gotten to the worst yet as far as water.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 3:21:23 AM

  • @lillymunster Well, since the water around plant is radiated, groundwater also contamminated and GoJ isn't doing ANY oversight, who is to say they haven't even done so already...who can prove it ?
    by Veenie 6/19/2011 3:22:47 AM

  • @all I have a documentary filmmaker asking me for sources about the ocean dumps, and the groundwater contamination. What are the best sources in your opinions?
    by bo 6/19/2011 3:23:33 AM

  • @Veenie I meant like digging a huge holding pond further back on the site. They have a bunch of land further back from the sea.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 3:23:50 AM

  • Hi, could you read this, please. And reflect upon it. Focus. Think about perspective. I've got to go. Cheers. atomicpowerreview.blogspot.com
by Pedro Jesus 6/19/2011 3:24:30 AM

  • @Bo, for the ocean dumps TEPCO and METI/NISA document those in reports as far as day/time, volume and radioactivity.
If he is looking for sea testing Greenpeace, Woods Hole and I think TEPCO released the numbers of rad levels coming out of the intakes.
TEPCO was taking ground water samples around the site and further inland. I am not sure if there has been any detection in aquifers further away.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 3:26:18 AM

  • @Bo the daily press releases usually document the event and refer to a PDF or other detailed document with the data. For TEPCO and GoJ agencies.

  • This video is a re-post due to time zone. Some of you may or may not have seen it. It is a message for nuclear engineers. Nothing hateful. If anything I respect their intelligence:

  • @lilly thanks
    by bo 6/19/2011 3:29:04 AM

  • If you are in the nuclear industry or know somebody email it to them. Its just something for them to think about. Being in a mostly nuclear free country besides Lucas Heights(medical reactor) I dont meet many nuclear experts.

  • Australia just sells the stuff!
    by AustralianCannonball 6/19/2011 3:32:54 AM

  • If they try and build one I'll be paying them a visit and arranging protests.

  • I should try and get Lucas Heights shut down.

  • 4 out of 5 want nuclear reactors scrapped in Japan
    TOKYO, June 19, Kyodo
More than four out of five Japanese want the nation's 54 nuclear reactors to be decommissioned either immediately or gradually in the wake of the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, a poll reported by the Tokyo Shimbun daily showed Sunday.
Only 14 percent said the reactors should continue operations while 82 percent backed their decommissioning, showing a marked lack of confidence in the nation's atomic energy policy, according to the June 11-12 poll.
In a breakdown, a total of 54 percent of respondents said the reactors should be decommissioned ''while taking into account the power supply-and-demand situation,'' followed by 19 percent who want decommissioning to ''start with ones undergoing periodic checks'' and 9 percent who called for immediate scrapping of nuclear plants.

  • @hudebnik good morning. @elainekirk that doc is written in the TEPCO language known as "incomprehensible." It seems to me that is exactly what they are saying.

  • @elainekirk it seems like they are saying the levels at the door are below the outside levels (2), below annual exposure limits (3), and therefore won't make any difference (4).

  • IAEA meet to propose regular N-safety checks
    The Yomiuri Shimbun
The introduction of regular safety evaluations at nuclear power plants is among proposals expected to be part of a declaration adopted at an International Atomic Energy Agency ministerial conference starting Monday.
A draft declaration obtained by The Yomiuri Shimbun also calls for creating a new legal framework on nuclear safety and an international compensation support system. The draft also calls on member states to share lessons from the disaster at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant and ensure transparency over nuclear safety.
The conference, to be held in Vienna, was called in the wake of the Fukushima crisis sparked by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The conference is expected to adopt the declaration on the first day of the five-day meeting.
If the draft is adopted, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano will then draw up draft action plans based on the declaration by September, when meetings of the IAEA's Board of Governors and General Conference are scheduled, according to sources.
The envisaged safety evaluations would be conducted by independent experts and be based on safety guidelines drawn up by the IAEA in areas such as earthquake resistance and quality control. The evaluations would cover not only operations at nuclear plants but also individual nation's safety regulations and emergency response plans.
IAEA officials are considering conducting the safety evaluations about once every five years. Experts from member nations likely would evaluate other member nations, the sources said.
The draft declaration also touches on recent developments in Germany and Italy that have taken the countries away from nuclear energy. While the agency says it understands such moves to abolish nuclear plants or decrease them in stages, the declaration states that nuclear power is an indispensable source of energy for some nations.
