  • @elainekirk - Sure sounds messy. Now I wonder which filter collected too much cesium --
"Tokyo Electric Power Company put the system into full operation on Friday night, but had to halt it 5 hours later as the radiation level of a cesium absorption device rose higher than expected.

The device is also designed to remove oil and technetium.

TEPCO says it may have absorbed larger-than-expected amounts of radioactive materials along with oil. The utility is now working on measures to solve the issue."

  • Zeolite is used in kitty litter so it would likely absorb oil. Kitty litter is common to use to soak up oil spills on concrete.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 12:10:04 AM

  • @diane now if i had something mixed in water and added oil shook it up and then tried to filter it ...
    by elainekirk 6/19/2011 12:10:56 AM

  • @nancy and if kitty litter is oily can it still absorb cesium
    by elainekirk 6/19/2011 12:11:33 AM

  • @Lurking I watched that special on NHK - it's very good.
    by Diane_NJ 6/19/2011 12:11:40 AM

  • @nancy @diane or are we seeing the oil attract the cesium and then ... oh I think i better pput kettle on
    by elainekirk 6/19/2011 12:12:26 AM

  • @elainekirk @nancy - I agree. Time for a cup of java!

  • @elainekirk @Edano Kurion absorption towers details api.viglink.com and api.viglink.com Yesterday they started only two. And both of them are having the unexpected high radiation trouble. 4.7 mSv/h was measured on line No. 1 and 3.9 mSV/h on line No. 3. (No.2 and No.4 were unused).

The absorption towers displaying these radiation levels are the oil and technetium removing towers, at the entrance of the system. Three possibilities were mentioned during the NISA's press conference on June 18th ( www.ustream.tv ) :

    * To do without the oil and technetium absorption tower (starting directly with the cesium removal towers) ;
    * Use of silica sand to filter oil
    * Changing the location of the radiation sensor

The first two will be tested on June 18th and 19th, using different solutions on each line and making comparisons. From Physics forum www.physicsforums.com

  • @lillymunster @elainekirk I've grown plants in kitty litter! Succulents love it. But there are different grades - I haven't explored, and cannot explain, the technicalities but in some the clay seems more fired than in the others which often dissolve to mud/sludge over time. I've also heard of garages using kitty litter to clean up oil spillages, and that it can be cheaper to buy the bags from the supermarket than get deliveries by the truckload!

  • Must be difficult talking through the masks.
    by Diane_NJ 6/19/2011 12:43:46 AM

  • the teppycan says that cam will be down 9-11 and yet it is still running does this mean the planned electrical improvement are a goner too?
    by elainekirk 6/19/2011 12:44:25 AM

  • @elainekirk You read my mind...or is this prep for work that they don't want going out live stream (hence planned electrical improvement)

    by M.I.A. 6/19/2011 12:47:30 AM

  • I found another historical nugget. This one is on improvement of rad monitoring of releases into the air. The NRC found out that the stack monitors at TMI were overwhelmed by the releases of radioactivity during the accident. Therefore, nobody was ever going to find out precisely how much went through the stack. This document makes suggestions: docs.google.com I hope the operators fixed this problem.
by Peter Melzer 6/19/2011 12:48:16 AM

  • noticed on the 'yellow water' vid that the techs did not notate where the swab samples they took exact location
    in the unit- not SOP
    by M.I.A. 6/19/2011 12:48:56 AM

  • @smoss do you think it will go down and then come back with #1 in her wedding dress?
    by elainekirk 6/19/2011 12:51:10 AM

  • @M.I.A. , the way this is done is that you take a map of the floor with you on which you mark the sampling location and identify the sample with a code.
by Peter Melzer 6/19/2011 12:51:27 AM

  • @Peter Melzer which it didn't appear they did, tho. didn't mark the samples, at least, not that I saw
