    by Edano 6/26/2011 6:14:59 PM

  • @Edano We know, that this kind of radiation is eating away at the insides healthy blood cells......who is going to keep track of all those contamminated.and those are just a few they diagnosed, i absolutly doubt they check all residents
    by Veenie 6/26/2011 6:16:53 PM

  • I did a promo for the new MUSE No Nukes benefit for the Japanese people yesterday, and when I came out, one of the people out in the common space said something like "Oh come on. What the hell do the Japanese need our money for? Aren't they like the third largest economy in the world? They certainly don't need our financial help."

That's the kind of attitude we're up against, and from a normally well-meaning person..
    by RadioGuy 6/26/2011 6:18:20 PM

  • @RadioGuy I cannot blame that kind of thinking......
It's the GoJ, that has created a we are alright PR picture.........their pride is killing their own !
    by Veenie 6/26/2011 6:21:17 PM

  • He had no idea until I told him that the Japanese economy is in the process of being devastated, and had never made the division between Japan the country and government, and Japan, the people.
    by RadioGuy 6/26/2011 6:21:26 PM

  • @RadioGuy I dont think they need money , there is billions in donations that hasnt been distributted what they need is people to stand up and fight for them, and given the fact most peep think throwing loose change in a can is support then the outlook is gloomy re people giving their time.
    by elainekirk 6/26/2011 6:23:02 PM

  • i am not sure if anyone donated anything to the usa during the shell crisis...
    by Edano 6/26/2011 6:24:31 PM

  • The thing that finally cleared the picture was a Katrina comparison. "We're the richest economy in the world, yet New Orleans was drowning, and we were turning down international offers of help: hospital ships, clothing, food, medical supplies, purification equipment. How did that make you feel?"
    by RadioGuy 6/26/2011 6:25:01 PM

  • @radioguy I read this article yesterday on Japan's suicide forest and I was blown away. People here don't realize the economic despair that exists in Japan right now...and given what has just happened it will get much worse. search.japantimes.co.jp
    by LM 6/26/2011 6:25:37 PM

  • Has anybody checked into the evacuation centers, how many are still there and if they have AC ?.....I know it's between 36-38 C there......heat is a factor now......... given the power shortage, they are at rink on Brownouts in the coming months
    by Veenie 6/26/2011 6:26:48 PM

  • @RadioGuy New Orleans didnt make headlines in the uk after the initial event until the video was released showing bloated bodies floating in the streets !!
    by elainekirk 6/26/2011 6:28:56 PM

  • @LM I also do not see the BIG international news org's "NHK / KYODO" being realistic in their reporting about the dire situation......They have got to realize, that ....well maybe it's all corperate sponsored......no reality
    by Veenie 6/26/2011 6:28:58 PM

  • The berm holding the flooded Missouri River back from Ft. Calhoun nuclear power station collapsed early Sunday ... and there was no danger. www.washingtonpost.com
    by Diane_NJ 6/26/2011 6:29:32 PM

  • @Veenie It seems the major news outlets are simply spewing the same rhetoric as the government and utilities. Everything has to look shiny and clean.
    by LM 6/26/2011 6:32:26 PM

  • @Veenie I don't know what it's like today but when I lived in Tokyo in the early 80's there was a concerted effort to marginalize and hide those segments of the population who were deemed as either unsuccessful or damaged. It's going to be incredibly difficult to hide the suffering now.
    by LM 6/26/2011 6:35:33 PM

  • @LM to me, and that is just my own opinion here, i am reminded to some extend of the old russia...hiding statistics, all is good.we have no problems that we cannot handle
    by Veenie 6/26/2011 6:38:39 PM

  • @Veenie Good point. Pride can be a powerful and dangerous thing
    by LM 6/26/2011 6:40:39 PM

  • @Diane_NJ Yes, praise be those two buildings were designed to be flooded! </sarcasm>
    by RadioGuy 6/26/2011 6:49:33 PM

  • @LM That is a sad article RE suicide forrest (
    by Veenie 6/26/2011 6:53:53 PM

  • @Veenie Truly sad. Ironically my son had asked me recently about modern perceptions of suicide in Japan and I wasn't sure what to tell him. I knew rates were high but I hadn't heard about the current depths of despair. It made me cry!
    by LM 6/26/2011 6:58:59 PM

  • @LM , I thought I saw a pic. posted earlier today. Maybe this: www.asahicom.jp

by Peter Melzer via Asahicom.jp 6/26/2011 7:09:02 PM

  • @Peter Is that a recent photo?
    by LM 6/26/2011 7:10:43 PM

  • @LM, I do not know the date when that photograph was taken. But the blue crane has not been there for long. Point is that unit 3 has been smoking away for a while, sometimes mixed with steam. Nancy noted earlier that that structures appear more and more decrepit. I noticed that unit 3 looks more and more grimy.
by Peter Melzer 6/26/2011 7:32:26 PM

  • Hi, @all. Am I right that they are running on backup diesel generators now at Fort Calhoun?
    by bojack54 6/26/2011 7:38:18 PM

  • @bojack54 That's what I think.
    by Diane_NJ 6/26/2011 7:50:01 PM

  • @bojack54 - but can't be certain. Haven't seen any new info.
    by Diane_NJ 6/26/2011 7:51:08 PM

  • @Peter I agree. I've been seeing darker smoke from 3 for a while but I couldn't be positive given our vantage point. There do seem to be changes for sure. Unfortunately the bulk of the smoke from 3 is often obscured by the stack near it. Frustrating!

  • Latest from AP re Ft. Calhoun: "The berm's collapse didn't affect the reactor shutdown cooling or the spent fuel pool cooling, but the power supply was cut after water surrounded the main electrical transformers, the NRC said. Emergency generators powered the plant until an off-site power supply was connected Sunday afternoon, according to OPPD" hosted.ap.org

  • Tokyo Electric Power Company has begun adding boric acid to the spent fuel storage pool of the No.3 reactor at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant to prevent fuel racks from being corroded by alkaline water.

The company started the operation on Sunday morning. About 90 tons of water containing boric acid will be poured into the pool through Monday.

Concrete debris from the March hydrogen explosion of the reactor building has been detected in the fuel pool.

  • Just got back, decided to check in... So the water berm collapsed at Calhoun? I said something to someone last week that all it would take is a sharp branch floating downstream to puncture that thing.
Any news on keeping water out of the core buildings?
    by lillymunster 6/26/2011 9:04:11 PM

  • My last water level check on the 23rd had Calhoun at 1006 ft. Plant is at 1004 ft. flood protection supposedly has to 1014 ft. Without that water berm they have to have water at least at the doors of the main building.
    by lillymunster 6/26/2011 9:05:11 PM

  • @lillymunster I just retwweeted this report www.omaha.com
by Elaine Kirk 6/26/2011 9:06:08 PM

  • @lillymunster that report is what the omaha police tweeted so out of the 10000's coming through I thought it may be most factual
by Elaine Kirk 6/26/2011 9:07:37 PM

  • @lillymunster AnnistonPD Anniston Police Dept
Severe T-Storm Warning Etowah,Calhoun and Talladega Co until 445 PM. Main risk will be high wind small hail and lightning
by Elaine Kirk 6/26/2011 9:09:52 PM

  • @Elaine Kirk off to look quick. Calhoun is in Washington county in NE for reference. Sometimes they intermix city and county on weather reports and can get confusing.
    by lillymunster 6/26/2011 9:12:30 PM

  • curently minor rain south of Omaha near Cooper NPP, medium sized severe thunderstorm in central NE making its way to Omaha but should have 1-2 hrs to get there.
