@lilly are you there or elaine
by dean 6/27/2011 2:22:58 AM

I just stopped back in Dean.

Interesting report on the quality control of the MOX at Fukushima.
www.klimaatkeuze.nlby lillymunster 6/27/2011 2:41:17 AM

@smoss Hi, not sure if you already read the article I posted. They knew some of the mox at fuku was bad but still apparently ran it?
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 2:43:55 AM

hi lilly.. and smoss..
by dean 6/27/2011 2:49:11 AM

@lilly.. I traveled to work this afternoon.. whewwwwwww 3 hour drive ,,, I wondered if you were able to get that to PETER
by dean 6/27/2011 2:49:37 AM

@dean Yes. I emailed it to him this afternoon. I forwarded the email so he should be able to contact you back directly.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 2:51:47 AM

TY LILLY
by dean 6/27/2011 2:52:35 AM

@Dean, YW. Not sure if you caught it yet. They popped the water berm at Ft. Calhoun with some heavy equipment.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 2:53:33 AM

ut oh... now what?
by dean 6/27/2011 2:55:37 AM

now see.,. that probably wasn't in the PRA for an identified initiating event
by dean 6/27/2011 2:56:10 AM

@dean It didn't seem to kick off any upgraded alert. They are being vague about the 1004 sea level of the plant vs. the 1006 ft. water. So unsure where the water actually is on the main building.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 2:57:29 AM

TY lilly for the update.. any new news on cooper ..
by dean 6/27/2011 2:58:32 AM

@smoss I keep stumbling across these things trying to find some data on the Kashiwazaki MOX inventory or inspections. Every time I find something it is just more of this puzzling lack of safety processes.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 2:59:32 AM

@dean Nothing new that I found. Cooper should see a 1.5 foot increase in the next week. (Calhoun water to stay the same). That puts Cooper over the line for being at an alert but below their flood protection tactics. So we could see Cooper forced into shut down this week if the water increases per the predictions I found.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 3:01:15 AM

lilly.. I did a search on 'QUALITY CONTROL ON MOX PELLETS. and it opened up a whole big long story of problems
by dean 6/27/2011 3:02:12 AM

@dean If it is anything like the few papers I ran across so far it does not seem to be good. One claimed the license and ISO rating one of the manufacturers had amounted to nothing as far as any actual proof of quality or competence.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 3:04:11 AM

2 feet if water us around the containment and axillary buildings at Ft. Calhoun.
www.msnbc.msn.comby lillymunster 6/27/2011 3:10:25 AM

@lilly.. I'm not positive but from what I've done on the MOX it's one international agreed upon way to get rid of the plutonium left over from the cold war to prevent it from getting into the wrong hands.. on the surface perhaps a viable reason.. however, from that point is where it breaks down .. multiple countries and companies trying to get the work and with little international regulations all kinds of "what ever it takes to get the product out' attitudes that , as you know, finally come to the surface...I say.. stop mox and go to plan B.. and run the fuel in the reactors they were originally designed for..
by dean 6/27/2011 3:11:29 AM

A berm holding the flooded Missouri River back from a Nebraska nuclear power station collapsed early Sunday, but federal regulators said there was no danger. COUGH COUGH COUGH.. what the heck are they thinking
by dean 6/27/2011 3:12:32 AM

@dean They forgot they mentioned early on that they had this awesome water berm so everything was going to be fine.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 3:13:30 AM

I'm going to get some letters off to the senators (3 of them) that are calling for a special hearing with the NRC..
by dean 6/27/2011 3:13:31 AM

yeh I remember that..
by dean 6/27/2011 3:13:46 AM

next.. water berm has failed and buildings full of water but it's no danger because the reactor is shutdown safely .... sigh
by dean 6/27/2011 3:14:13 AM

@dean Nebraska seems to be a bit defiant about the risks with the situation. They seem to forget they placed these near 3 other states..
I don't know how they are going to effectively keep water out through August. They claim they have other prevention to keep water out but don't give details. I worry about frying electrical systems.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 3:15:57 AM

I think they said the doors were water proof or something,,, but you know.. water finds it's way down,,, the one thing I want to know is how about all those other buildings outside the berm? are they part of the secondary system ,, storage or waste treatment, air compressors etc.?
by dean 6/27/2011 3:17:43 AM

Hi @LM, and good morning all
by bo 6/27/2011 3:19:29 AM

@LM 60's/70's. Cooper is an old Mark 1 BWR.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 3:23:04 AM

correct LM .. if that missouri water entered .. the reactor may be TOAST
by dean 6/27/2011 3:26:19 AM

@LM Missouri river water is pretty gross on a good day. It would wreck anything it gets into.
by lillymunster 6/27/2011 3:27:25 AM

IF that water entered the SFP they would have to flush and flush and hope they could salvage the fuel...if in the reactor it could be weeks if at all to salvage it and get the chemistry control back..
by dean 6/27/2011 3:30:07 AM

@LM What caught my attention before the flooding started was that Ft. Calhoun was on the NRC yellow "naughty" list for unsafe procedures. Their flood plan in 2010 had major gaps in it and they found holes in the building that were not taken into consideration.
We don't have much room to toss stones at Japanese oversight. Our own is certainly lacking in some areas.
