  • @RadioGuy where are the two breaches in relation to calhoun and was Jazcko seen leaving the scene with a bundle of dynamite? :-)
    by lillymunster 7/1/2011 9:09:24 PM

  • @Elaine at least that they report much lower exposures.

  • @lillymunster The report on the Hwy 30 breach placed it on a secondary levee 1 mile south of mile marker 2 on US30. (so assumedly the NW side of the DeSoto Bend. The other one? here's this:
    www.southwestiowanews.com
BREAKING NEWS: Citizens blow levee north of Council Bluffs
Pottawattamie County public information officer and County Attorney Matt Wilber said authorities were not notified before the explosion and are investigating.

The county was aware previously that a group of citizens wanted to breach the levee to drain pooling water back into the Missouri.

“It is our understanding that neither the State of Iowa, nor the Army Corps of Engineers, nor any other governmental entity, had anything to do with the detonation,” he said.

The impact of the blown levee is unclear.
    by RadioGuy 7/1/2011 9:34:46 PM

  • So now do we get vigilante groups blowing levees completely outside of any planning by the Corps to flood another town instead of theirs? I guess they did the extensive engineering needed to make sure it would drain out into the river instead of ultimately back in, eh?
    by RadioGuy 7/1/2011 9:37:53 PM

  • @RadioGuy So then the Iowa side sneaks across at night and blows the Nebraska side of the levee to ease flooding on their side... Why the state or the feds were letting people build river levees without some sort of coordination is well, stupid.
    by lillymunster 7/1/2011 9:39:44 PM

  • @Elaine, I searched around for that document you asked about (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.asahi.com%2Fspecial%2F10005%2FTKY201107010445.html), the most likely place to find it is probably www.nisa.meti.go.jp but my Japanese isn't so good, neither is my Googlese. But it might be there somewhere.

  • Los Alamos weather update...............
The following message is transmitted at the request of the New
Mexico department of health and the environment department.

Portions of north central New Mexico will continue to experience
smoke impacts from ongoing wildfires... namely the Pacheco and the Las
    Conchas wildfires.

Terrain influenced winds may transport smoke into adjacent
valleys including the city of Santa Fe and the pueblos of jemez...
zia... and Kewa early this morning... but concentrations should slowly
improve as the day progresses. Los Alamos and White Rock will likely
experience the heavier concentrations of smoke today... with
visibilities temporarily reduced to 1 to 3 miles.............There isn't a monitoring station in Santa Fe, which would be the next probable spot besides Albuquerque to look at the Rad counts. There are slight upticks in Colorado and Kansas but nothing as obvious as the Albuquerque readings. www.wunderground.com

    by smoss 7/1/2011 11:51:13 PM

  • @smoss that is a rather neat video. The browns ferry one, what if they lost one reactor, seems like it would make the others unservici
    ble.
    by lillymunster 7/1/2011 11:59:00 PM

  • @all Earlier, K-State's research reactor was mentioned in conjunction with events coming out of Nebraska (ie. Cooper/Calhoun)...This is the University's press release www.k-state.edu
    by smoss 7/1/2011 11:59:36 PM

  • @lillymunster I agree with both statements... video was pretty comprehensive...and it sure does seem to be a reasonable conclusion, at Brown's Ferry, if one goes I sure can't image the others being accessable.

  • @smoss They put extra thick walls in the lower levels between the units but have a single refueling floor. One melts down you likely lose access to all 3. If one blows, all 3 take damage including the joint refueling floor.

  • There is a chance here that they have something big planned for the Sunday and this is just the build up - we can hope
by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 12:35:19 AM

  • from the guardians Orwellian piece
These guys were not just cosy. They were naked, in bed and consenting. Their closeness now raises questions such as what influence could the industry have had on the chief nuclear inspector's report on Fukushima, and whether speeches by David Cameron, Chris Huhne and other ministers were informed or even written by the industry. Can we ever trust government to tell us the truth on nuclear power, or should we just accept that the industry and government are now as one.
by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 12:37:13 AM

  • @Elaine Kirk The Guardian? That could be big if there is more than was in those emails. They seem intent on keeping it in the news.
    by lillymunster 7/2/2011 12:37:14 AM

  • Also from The Guardian piece:
We now know Fukushima was on the same scale as Chernobyl, and likely to be the most expensive accident in the history of industrial accidents. Yet industry and government here want to dismiss it as "not as bad is it looks". Much more than the facts coming out of Japan, the emails now make the situation far worse for the industry caught with government trying to manipulate the truth.
    by RadioGuy 7/2/2011 12:37:51 AM

  • @lillymunster Little wonder. As I read it, from the unredacted parts of the email addresses, those first salvos were outgoing from British Gov to unnamed industry officials. That's how bought in they were.
