To test the theory that the darkening of the assemblies is due to a shadow, I examined pieces of rubble fallen on a lighter versus darker assembly top. If a shadow darkens the darker assemblies, then it should shade everything equality. But the results show that the little pieces of rubble are illuminated roughly equally. As a result, the contrast between rubble and assembly is much greater over the darker assembly, indicating that its darkness is a property of the assembly and not of a cast shadow and thus the same amount of light is striking all the assemblies. While the data here are far from perfect (but a brief glimpse on a grainy video), I think the 'shadow theory' is less likely than that the assemblies in the lower right corner are themselves darker. The question is why are they darker. Here's the video footage examined : www.youtube.com

  • In looking for MOX inspections I found a bunch of METI reports scolding TEPCO for going too long without inspecting things. One report had over 100 pieces of equipment at Kashiwazaki and Fukushima that needed inspection. Most of these reports are 2011 before the quake or 2010. www.meti.go.jp

  • In Le Monde Justice prevents a proposed subcontract to the La Hague plant
The Tribunal de Grande Instance of Paris has canceled Tuesday, July 5, a proposed outsourcing of nuclear reprocessing at La Hague Areva. A decision that satisfies the CGT and FOR, the source of this lawsuit. In July 2010, management of the company Areva Beaumont-Hague presented to the committee a proposed settlement under which it plans to entrust the construction and management of three wood boilers to Dalkia. A proposal motivated by economic considerations and environmental management believes.
A project that has added to outsource, to Dalkia also some missions in the energy sector. According to the unions, these missions are "to maintain the cooling pools and take over power in case of main power failure."
For the court, this outsourcing ordered by factory management, "generating significant psychosocial risks and technical risks and industrial implications, is likely to jeopardize the health and safety of the workers concerned".
The First Civil Chamber of the Paris Court therefore considered that there was "held to bar Areva continued implementation of outsourcing" planned, under penalty of 200,000 euros per infringement. This decision is in line with trade unions CGT and FOR, the cause of action.

  • @Elaine Kirk Ironic in light of the Atlantic articles and Peter's paper on the equipment issues. I didn't dig into them to see if any of the parts thought to have failed are on the list of not inspected parts or not.
    by lillymunster 7/5/2011 7:34:29 PM

  • Dear TEPCO,
You have not inspected large amounts of your equipment at your plants but we will still let you load plutonium in your ancient reactor unit.

    Love,

  • @lillymunster, thanks! I 'll check the simplyinfo site. Will you be updating the houseoffoust site, or shifting all activities to simplyinfo?
    by Ian 7/5/2011 7:42:00 PM

  • @Ian , I had to be away. The endings in the building shown on page 51 are actually the intakes of the system to vent the floors when radiation is detected.
I am not opposed to exploring alternatives to tepco's explanations. At this point, anything else plausible is at least as good. I still find it strange that the RPV is as hot as the pool on IR images and was already hotter. Tepco does not release any reactor parameters on Unit 4, at all.
by Peter Melzer 7/5/2011 7:44:09 PM

  • @Ian I have been doing more content over on Simplyinfo. Houseoffoust site will be more image documentation since that frequently can't fit into the image formats of the group site. Probably going to remove my newslinks section and link over to Simplyinfo for news. Something else I am working on is a documents archive on the Simplyinfo site so we can store text and pdf documents in an organized manner for all these manuals and saved reports. That probably won't be installed until I get the new theme template done. Still doing testing on that to work out the bugs.

  • I'm going back over those METI reports I mentioned. They complained to TEPCO of about 50 uninspected items on Feb 2 2011, and gave them until Feb 28, 2011 to get things handled. On Feb 28 METI wrote to TEPCO with the 100+ past due inspections. I am going to crunch numbers and write something up.

  • @lillymunster , check on turbine-driven pumps (RCIC and HPIC), governor valves, safety/relief valves and suction isolation valves.
by Peter Melzer 7/5/2011 7:54:18 PM

  • @lilymunster, well the documents are sure useful, I found what I need, I can measure the distance across the top of the tie plate (width) but not sure about height, we'll see. A definitive evaluation of apparent tie plate I found in SFP3 should require testing to see if the object approximates that proper dimensions. Though SFP3 is such a mess, I'm not sure can establish reliable references for sizes, but I'll see what I can do.

  • @Peter Melzer , sorry HPCI system (high pressure coolant injection system). This system also uses a turbine-driven pump.

  • @Peter Melzer finding a few valves, quite a few references to emergency generator parts. It seems with some of the items they did a cursory inspection last minute after METI hounded them. Some are ambiguous if they were inspected or not.
    by lillymunster 7/5/2011 8:15:34 PM

  • @Ian IIRC I think the assemblies might be 8in x 8in. One of the GE manuals should say.

  • @lillymunster , in the comment that Jo posted is this link: www.tepco.co.jp , which contains plenty pics of quake damage on the premises and some good reactor schemata showing the design differences between Unit 1 and the others. Note Unit 1 used an Isolation Condenser. Units 2, 3 and 4 were equipped with the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling Systems instead.
