  • @bo what a shame others arent prepared to stand with him and be honest with the people
    by elainekirk 7/9/2011 11:44:03 AM

  • @bo any new incubent will have to be put in place by those who want him out and that doesnt bode well for transparent government

    by dean 7/9/2011 11:49:33 AM

  • @elainekirk if Kan, who built his career on fighting corruption and for environmental issues can't do anything, it doesn't bode well. But then again, this is an unprecedented time of great change here, often politicians who rise to ride such energy are unforeseen.

  • @Bo, did you happen to see the links I posted about 8 hrs ago about the organized mothers group in Japan fighting the govt. radiation policies? They seem to really have their act together.
    by lillymunster 7/9/2011 12:47:47 PM

  • Hi illymunster
    by bo 7/9/2011 12:52:50 PM

  • Hey lilly, do you know a good source for the fact that levels which triggered evacuations at Chernobyl are not triggering evacuations in Japan?
    by bo 7/9/2011 12:54:32 PM

  • @bo hmm. I see it mentioned frequently in articles. Trying to do from an original source document standpoint there are some Chernobyl web sites that keep good records. Also the groups that focus on Pryipat would likely have those numbers used listed. I am not sure of the numbers Japan is using as a threshold if they even are. The approach seems to be very arbitrary without them saying "over X is evacuation".

  • Bo, this seems to be the article that started the blogs making the Chernobyl statement. It cites Japan agencies statements but doesn't really say where that Chernobyl number comes from. It does have the reporters names on it. www.asahi.com

  • DoCoMo (cell phone company) to build solar/wind stations near their cell phone towers. Will sell any excess power generation. www.asahi.com
If more companies do this kind of thing as a business continuity practice they could make a big difference.

  • I'll check that out lilly
    by dean 7/9/2011 1:51:52 PM

  • gm all, as to MOX, I believe that the intend of the Japanese industry has been to increase the percentage in the cores to the extend that more plutonium is consumed than produced. The other thought is that the Japanese certainly would wish to move away from foreign reprocessing to home grown industries because of the cost. When we see a drop in orders, home grown reprocessing may be online within the next year and a half.

  • @bo, is Musashi mentioned in the context of leadership and crisis?
by Peter Melzer 7/9/2011 1:57:35 PM

  • @Peter Melzer as I don't read Japanese, I can't really say if he is brought up in relation to the current crisis. Sorry.
    by bo 7/9/2011 1:59:44 PM

  • @bo , I just wondered whether politicians mention his Book of Five Rings Go Rhi No Sho when debating qualities of leadership.
by Peter Melzer 7/9/2011 2:04:10 PM

  • I can ask about that, but can't say myself. I live in Japan, but I am an Americanist myself.
    by bo 7/9/2011 2:09:23 PM

  • Morning all! Perusing the headlines I came across this one...an absolute travesty...........Fukushima gov't mulls inspecting all meat processed in prefecture
    FUKUSHIMA, Japan, July 9, Kyodo
english.kyodonews.jp .........How can they not be testing every cow!!!!?
    by LM 7/9/2011 2:09:49 PM

  • @LM good morning. Don't think this would matter much, since there are reports that the cows and fish that come from Fukushima have been moved to other prefectures so that they can be sold without stigma.
    by bo 7/9/2011 2:17:07 PM

  • @bo, thanks. Kan should definitely read this book.
by Peter Melzer 7/9/2011 2:18:06 PM

  • @Bo You're right. They were definitely moving cattle and milk cows. I hadn't heard about the fish but it doesn't surP
    by LM 7/9/2011 2:18:56 PM

  • ...surprise me. Yikes..I haven't had enough coffee yet to compensate for my terrible typing! I just don't understand why all food wasn't prevented from leaving the prefecture. I know it's money but lives are far more important.
    by LM 7/9/2011 2:21:05 PM

  • To us. Not to the GoJ.
