  • Yes, harvest schedules become important. If you like cranberries or cranberry sauce, for instance, you'll probably want to buy them before this fall when this years crop is harvested after sitting in bogs all summer.

  • Rice is going to be the killer. Early 2011 rice harvests have already hit the stores, and while the aged rices are still clean, at this point you're going to have to start worrying about 2011 rice. With a maturity average of 4-5 months, it's already possibly too late to trust 2011 plantings.
    by RadioGuy 7/9/2011 5:30:56 PM

  • @Jo Those are the things we should begin compiling. I'll try to write something up later on today for the blog as a place to accumulate and drop info of this sort.

  • @Bobby1 I noticed that Jasmine rice has a long maturity length (up to 9 months) so even if it's listed as 2011, that's harvest, so until about December, the Jasmine rice is probably clean. Basmati is aged up to 2 years, so it'll be clean for a while.

  • @lillymunster Re: the Berkeley tests, they're ramping down after non-detection after no-detection, but still showing contamination in milk, which led me to thinking about downstream contamination of concentrated milk, i.e. cheese.

Yes, they said 3 months, and that was mid-May, right?
    by RadioGuy 7/9/2011 5:43:24 PM

  • @RadioGuy I think so on the EPA thing so that would be mid-August. Is there anyone else food testing in the US?

  • Here's a particularly telling paragraph from the Compass article below:
Chris Busby, Ph.D., Scientific Secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk, who published a “Don’t Panic” guide in early April saying that the danger was insignificant, later changed his opinion. In an April 24 statement to Washington’s Blog, Busby said, “…since then I have re-thought this advice as the thing is still fissioning and releasing 10 to the fourteen Becquerels a day. This will mean that strontium 90 and uranium and particulates will be building up in the USA and Europe. I will assess this later but for now I think it prudent to stop drinking milk.”
    by RadioGuy 7/9/2011 6:55:19 PM

  • Nothing has changed for the better since then.
    by RadioGuy 7/9/2011 6:55:44 PM

  • @RadioGuy I am non techi but Busby annoyed me from the start because he was influencial in killing interest in fuku amongst the global population and in doing so he removed a safety factor for the people of fuku because he gave tepco and goj a license to abuse
    by elainekirk 7/9/2011 7:00:14 PM

  • @elainekirk Exactly, so his mea culpa was a bit too little too late for me, but particularly telling considering the source.

One problem is that the milk-replacement options are thinning as well. What do you use? Rice milk? (Bog grown) Nut milk? (Rad sponge) Soy milk? (field grown, then soaked and concentrated).
    by RadioGuy 7/9/2011 7:01:58 PM

  • The Committee has published two works, the ECRR 2003 Recommendations of the European Committee on Radiation Risk: Health Effects of Ionising Radiation Exposure at Low Doses for Radiation Protection Purposes. Regulators' Edition; and ECRR Chernobyl 20 Years On: the Health Effects of the Chernobyl Accident. Chernobyl 20 Years On is cited in one Pubmed-published document: a review by Professor Rudi H. Nussbaum from Portland State University which challenges the accepted view of the long-term health consequences from the incident.[6] Shortly after the 2003 Recommendations was published the United Kingdom's Health Protection Agency issued a response, in which they describe the ECRR as "...a self-styled organisation with no formal links to official bodies" and criticize its findings as "arbitrary and [without] a sound scientific basis. Furthermore, there are many misrepresentations of [the] ICRP".[7] en.wikipedia.org
    by elainekirk 7/9/2011 7:04:16 PM

  • @elainekirk Of course, given that no one (to their shame actually) considered at the start that TEPCO would be flat-out lying to the GoJ and the entire world, there's a minimal kind of excuse there, but most of the people who bought it should have known better (and possibly did until the CYA express started up).

  • Depleted Uranium Storage Facility Also Burned when Cosmo Oil’s Gas Tank Exploded

On June 30 Chiba Prefectural Assembly held meetings of 2 standing committees [...] it was revealed that the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) tank fire and explosion at Cosmo Oil Refinery in Ichihara City, Chiba also burned the adjacent depleted uranium storage facility. There was no leak of radioactive materials, according to the committee. enenews.com
