  • Morning all! I'm sure this article was already posted but I found this excerpt particularly amusing: "Cattle shipments from the zones were temporarily suspended after the nuclear accident, but in late April the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said shipments could resume if the prefectural government took certain safety steps, such as inspecting the surface of the cattle's bodies." Are they really that stupid?! Testing outside the body!!! I guess they don't know about internal bioaccumulation. I'm dumfounded! www.yomiuri.co.jp

  • @Peter Melzer : i am a bit puzzled over the stress tests as well. i have read that the european tests have been weakened already by the nuke industry [areva] so they will not cover any external events like natural disasters or plane crashes anymore. only the internal equipment will be tested.
    by Edano 7/11/2011 3:43:02 PM

  • @Peter Melzer I think if truth be known other nations are getting nervous that their cover-up of daichi will blow up in their faces if there is a second accident so we are just witnessing the diplomatic wheels churning I have seen a few mention of the EU seismic standards ... the eu have been raising limits on food etc without mandate so all this is just a cover our backs exercise.
The fact this has been given coverage when no other news gets out stinks of 'diplomats'
    by elainekirk 7/11/2011 3:44:21 PM

  • @LM : exactly, the cattle from inside the exclusion zone is a masterpiece of stupidity.
    by Edano 7/11/2011 3:44:25 PM

  • next thing they will be decontaminating the cows before they are slaughtered or shave all their hair off and say... no more contamination. this naked cow is good now

  • @Edano Definitely a double face palm!

  • @dean We should try and confirm those numbers from other sources. It deserves our particular attention. I'm still overwhelmed with my report on "Kurion's Network" so I don't have spare time to do it. Any volunteer?
by Pedro Jesus 7/11/2011 3:54:01 PM

  • As to the Mark I primary containments in US BWR, I have not found a reactor yet, in which the dry well (the bulb) is not made of steel encased in heavy concrete. There seem to be differences in wet well construction, however. Again I am not the expert, but there are some that are composed of steel-linded concrete and others are steel tubes embedded in concrete shells. Sounds to me like the same, but obviously to engineers it isn't. I shall be back in a little while, :)

  • As a Nuclear Engineer and being involved with tracking the FUKUSHIMA accident I have a question. Is the EPA going to raise the Protective Action Guides (PAG's) for exposure to radioactive isotopes, changes in the CLEAN WATER ACT for drinking limits which would impose new "higher levels" and increase the percentage of those exposed to developing cancers?
    by dean 7/11/2011 4:07:18 PM

  • @cat Well done. Now we have around half a dozen sources reporting the 20-fold increase in the radiation limit of Caesium in some products. That's a good start. Keep digging. We need to get to the bottom of this.

  • Sorry couldn't resist this one. In response to the scandalous revelations that Kyushu Electric ordered some of its employees and staff to attend prefecture meetings and send e-mails, a Kyushu Electric executive said. "Some people who support nuclear power plants don't take the trouble to go to meetings, so relevant supervisors probably sent [staff] to ensure that the meetings and hearings were fair."
    by cat 7/11/2011 4:35:47 PM

    Kyushu Electric scandal

"Some people who support nuclear power plants don't take the trouble to go to meetings, so relevant supervisors probably sent [staff] to ensure that the meetings and hearings were fair."

Haruyoshi Yamamoto (R), vice president of Kyushu Electric Power Co., bows in apology to Kagoshima Gov. Yuichi Ito, at the prefectural head office in the city of Kagoshima on July 11, 2011. The utility is under fire for having employees post online comments in support of the restart of its nuclear reactors in Saga Prefecture on a government-sponsored TV program aimed at seeking support for their resumption. Vermont Yankee Plant Controversy: Nuclear Regulatory Commission Keeps Information From Public . When a nuclear watchdog group asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a study on leaks of radioactive water at the Vermont Yankee plant, it was told the NRC had seen the report but had never officially taken custody of it – so it wasn't public.
Critics say it's a style of communication between regulator and regulated that cuts out the public and even state regulators trying to track leaks of tritium, a radioactive form of water linked with cancer when ingested in high amounts. www.huffingtonpost.com

  • @cat You know, when I saw that article on March 14, my first thought was "Oh thank heavens, Palast has this one on is radar. He'll take TEPCO apart. It's what he does."

And that was his last article on it. I seriously do not know what to make of that.
