  • sounds good lilly... I had to come to the office to catch up on some work for work.. whewwww.... this week I am hosting the TEAM RALEIGH from UK for racing here so it's going to be crazy from wednesday on.. and then we travel on to Bend Oregon for racing there...

  • lilly would you post the link again.. I was shutdown and dont' see it....
    by dean 7/11/2011 1:38:12 PM

  • also.. lilly .. I've sent a couple of emails off to nuclear engineering groups for explanations on details of dresdens reactor containments...
    by dean 7/11/2011 1:38:53 PM

  • @All, added a short post with images of the damage found to unit 4 after the quake over the weekend. wp.me

  • @Dean - link to the documentation page: wp.me

Would be good to know more about Dresden. Some info this morning Dresden may have the building as containment like Cooper. Found a bit last night that Brunsick NPP may be the only steel+concrete containment bulb in the US.

  • Helicopter testing Seattle for radiation, but it’s not what you think. Yes, that helicopter buzzing low over King and Pierce counties this week will be measuring for radioactive materials.
No, it’ s not because of the Fukushima meltdown in Japan.
The Washington state Department of Health says the scheduled test just happens to coincide with the nuclear power plant’s troubles. Health officials are trying to establish a radiation baseline for the region, which would be used in the event of a radiation emergency. blog.seattlepi.com

  • High level contamination in reactor building found www3.nhk.or.jp "the plant operator said robots have detected airborne cesium-134 inside the No.2 reactor building ranging from 40 to 65 times above the government's standard"

  • hi markfm.. nice seeing you
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:08:31 PM

  • Busy in the summer. Wonder when they'll get the water decontamination system running cleanly -- it would be nice if they could start moving more water in, cool things down a bit more.

  • @Markfm that below they don't call the concrete a containment then? I thought fuku had concrete containment?
    by elainekirk 7/11/2011 2:19:40 PM

  • it is saying stell for the bulb ??

    by elainekirk 7/11/2011 2:24:00 PM

  • I'm confused by the description.
    by Markfm 7/11/2011 2:26:42 PM

  • @Markfm Take a look at this link, which is posted above and then re-read the description. It might shed some light. The link is pinned above, btw. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge it. www.nei.org
by Pedro Jesus 7/11/2011 2:30:38 PM

  • @ elaine... I believe that once you get outside of the reactor pressure vessel.. the steel one.. it gets alittle hazy for people to understand the other so called containments or shielding structures
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:31:04 PM

  • @Markfm @dean sorry forgot the link www.nrc.gov
    by elainekirk 7/11/2011 2:31:57 PM

  • like in the description.. the reactor pressure vessel is surrounded by the
    cylindrical shield wall..
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:33:30 PM

  • then .. there is the dry well.. which is the bulb they talk about,,, specifically designed to serve as another barrier or defense in depth from radiation leaking out from the reactor to the outside.... and that bulb is built strong enough to be leak tight... and inerted with nitrogen pressure
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:37:54 PM

  • on the outside of the steel bulb, they then would put specially strong concrete for shielding for adjacent areas and for added strength to the bulb.
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:39:12 PM

  • initially I believe they said.. ok.. at the top of the bulb we will have an interface with water so fuel can be taken up out of the core and transfered to the canal which had to be elevated to match the elevation of the top of the reactor to allow water shielding for the operators when they transfered fuel back and forth
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:40:27 PM

  • then,,, they made a robust top head of the reactor vessel.. tuff enough to handle the pressures and accident required strength... and,,, they then tied that into a concrete cap which formed the upper part of the concrete shielding....
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:41:24 PM

  • @Markfm @elainekirk @Dean If you check the image that it is pinned under my name above after the title Fukushima Reactor Schematics you will understand the description straight away. It is very clear. The RPV is in red. The Primary Containment is in yellow and is steel reinforced concrete (I assume they call it the shield walls in the other description). The Supression Pool also known as Torus is bellow, part of the Primaty Containment, is placed around the lower part of the RPV on the under ground level, on top of the base mat. It is also very clear on the afore mentioned image the 6 levels, or floors, inside the Secondary Containment (also know as reactor building). You can count the levels on the left hand side of the image. All the levels are part of the same room, they are not separated by walls. I hope this will help dissipate your doubts about how the unit looks like from the inside.
by Pedro Jesus 7/11/2011 2:42:25 PM

  • initially they probably thought that the steel bulb would handle accident conditions and be even better with the robust concrete shell around it and they ran like that until some of the more severe accident analysis results came in and then they said.. oops.. we have to do something...
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:42:30 PM

  • @dean ooops indeed
    by elainekirk 7/11/2011 2:43:13 PM

  • so that is when the US put that vent line to the outside of the building as a way to vent off HYDROGEN gas and let it explode outside the building instead of where it did at fuku
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:43:38 PM

  • excellent pedro... it does help...
    by dean 7/11/2011 2:44:16 PM

  • @dean and Japan 'asked' its energy comps if they would like to do the same but they decided not to ..
    by elainekirk 7/11/2011 2:44:58 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus thanks pedro
