@Jo It is so hard to sort things out. You get govt and industry statements that are frequently worthless because they are skewing things to meet their agenda. Then you have individuals who either don't understand the information or purposely want to cause panic. Then there is everything in between.
They are only blog posts but a good way to spot something starting is the people that live there noticing a change.

This reminded me of the comments earlier today: Recent animal research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture showed that blueberry and strawberry extracts helped prevent brain damage from radiation exposure. Interestingly, the polyphenols of each fruit protected different areas of the brain – supporting a variety of dietary berry intake and/or supplements with multiple berries.

@lillymunster @Jo have sent you the bird convo including the insects as a google doc :)

@elainekirk Thanks! Will post a link to the group page when I have it uploaded.

@all. I am looking for home use things to help keep radiation or contamination down. I was thinking that the micro filters used for allergy sufferers would help keep dirt from coming in windows or at least minimze
it. The thought process is that if you keep the dirt out you would keep the contamination coming in down. Please tell me if you see a flaw in this? I don't have enough experience with radioactivity control to know if this is accurate.
by lillymunster 7/13/2011 9:07:24 PM

@lillymunster I wonder if the Icelanders could help with that ? they have extensive knowledge and as we have seen although some methods are just practical like towels around windows they are maybe something that some japanese will not have thought of due to the invisible nature of radiation
by elainekirk 7/13/2011 9:11:05 PM

@Bobby1 that was my first thought. But many homes in Japan don't have central heat and air. They have either wall unit heaters or what looks like a glorified space heater. Then window AC or those Mitsubishi wall unit ac things.
by lillymunster 7/13/2011 9:23:55 PM

@elainekirk yes Iceland would know a thing or two about filtering things out. Volcanic ash is some nasty stuff.
by lillymunster 7/13/2011 9:24:47 PM

I found some of the allergy filters for window ac units and windows, just not HEPA. Trying to figure out the air intake on those Mistubishi units.
by lillymunster 7/13/2011 9:25:28 PM

the AC units I am talking about
www.mitsubishielectric.comIt looks like they make HEPA filters for some of these kinds of units

@lillymunster a bit out of my depth maybe but I would suggest that vacuums of the cylinder variety (suck rather than beat) with good filtering bags in I use Hetty with hepa bags

by elainekirk 7/13/2011 9:42:31 PM

These are all sorts of cool! An anti-nuclear group in Japan made these printable fans to be handed out at summer concerts and festivals. I am assuming they print them on heavy cardstock.
d.hatena.ne.jpThe anti-nuclear group is one I have not seen before. Maybe yet another new one?

@elainekirk nobody seems to be buying the power company claims that Japan can't live without the nuclear plants. I see posts all over of people pointing out the holes in the power company claims
by lillymunster 7/13/2011 10:27:00 PM

@elainekirk maybe next year they can run the lanterns on solar power. :-)

@elainekirk That nonsense has to be stopped. That is purposely exposing someone to make a buck. If you have a news article for it let me know so I can add it to the news roundup
