  • Just reading Cara's article @bo had to just post this up from tepco 'within normal movement range'!!! their movement range ain't 'normal ' by any stretch of the imagination
There was an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 (on the Richter scale) whose
epicenter was Fukushima offshore at around 3:51 am on July 25, however,
no abnormality was observed on water injection into the reactors of Unit
1 to 3, the nitrogen injection gas into PCVs of Unit 1 to 3, the operation
of water treatment facility, operation of cyclic cooling of the spent fuel
pool in Unit 2 and 3 using alternative cooling and filtering system and so
on. There were also neither abnormality on major plant parameter of each
unit nor injuries. The indicated values at monitoring posts on the
boundary of power station's premise are within a normal movement range.

  • Contaminated water on increase at Fukushima plant

Tokyo Electric Power Company is injecting fresh water from a nearby dam to make up for the shortage of water in its system for cooling the reactors at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The system decontaminates radioactive water that has accumulated in the plant and circulates it.

TEPCO halted the process of removing salt from contaminated water after an alarm went off around noon on Sunday due to a problem with the installation of the desalination equipment. It resumed the operation in the evening after installing another device.

The new device is only able to treat half the amount of water. The amount of contaminated water has been increasing since the problem occurred.

TEPCO began using the new circulatory water injection system late last month. Last week, the government and the utility announced the completion of the first stage of the plan to stabilize the cooling of the reactors.

NHK's reporter points out that as a result of Sunday's trouble, the amount of contaminated water is increasing. He adds that the recycling of cooling water, a key element of bringing the accident under control, cannot be maintained.

TEPCO is investigating the cause of the problem. The utility says the decontamination system as a whole is not operating stably and it needs to improve its reliability.

  • Increased counter-terrorism measures called for

Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission has called on the government and utilities to increase measures to protect nuclear power plants against terror attacks.

On Monday, the commission held a meeting with experts to approve a draft report on how to protect nuclear power plants using knowledge gained from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The commission has been considering measures to protect nuclear power plants and radioactive materials from terrorist attacks in response to a growing danger of terrorism worldwide.

The draft report calls for fortification of facilities that were destroyed by the March 11 tsunami at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

It says training should be conducted to prepare for a scenario in which a terrorist attack seriously damages a nuclear facility.

The report also calls for stricter personnel management at nuclear power plants to prevent terrorist infiltration.

At Fukushima Daiichi, workers have been hired without sufficient security clearance. Authorities are unable to contact about 200 workers.

An expert who participated in the meeting said the accident at Fukushima Daiichi has taught terrorists how vulnerable society is to radioactive materials. Another said raising public awareness of security is important.

The commission will finalize its proposal to the government and electric power companies by September.

  • @Edano I think "terrorism" is getting used as an excuse to block the public from knowing what goes on in NPPs or to know anything about what is going on at them. The US ran a story about this last week. So now governments can use the excuse that they can't discuss details about a power plant safety due to terrorists. If they are that big of a terror target private companies should not be owning them.
    by lillymunster 7/25/2011 12:20:12 PM

  • @edano, "...fresh water from a nearby dam ..." Had tepco had thought about this option earlier and installed a pipeline as preventive measure, it might have saved them plenty complications. The salt water was used too late, clogged valves and piping, and did not cool the core well. Their shortsightedness cost Japan dearly.

  • Akita, Yamagata prefectures to test all cattle for radiation

    AKITA/YAMAGATA, Japan, July 25, Kyodo

The Akita and Yamagata prefectural governments said Monday they will test all beef cattle for radiation contamination after radioactive cesium above the allowable level set by the central government was detected in cattle there.

''In a bid to secure food safety and protect the Yamagata beef brand, we will test all cattle planned to be shipped from the prefecture,'' Yamagata Gov. Mieko Yoshimura told a press conference. ''We will ship only those certified as containing less radioactive substances than the allowable limit or none at all.''

Yamagata will attach safety certificates to cattle which have tested safe.

  • @Peter Melzer So let me think. This entire area is completely contaminated. We just had big post-typhoon gully-washers that scoured the topsoil of the entire prefecture down into the river, accumulating who knows what mix of random radionuclides, so what could go wrong adding that stew into the RPV cooling system of a nuclear plant which we know resembles a sieve. Wonder what that does to the fission equations. Oh well, it's better than the alternative I guess, but there's just nothing to love about random in nuclear equations.

  • Isn't it interesting that there is SO much hoopla about the poor Japanese beef... new stories every day, wider contamination, deeper contamination. All I can say is: thank heavens they've only tested beef so only the beef is contaminated.

  • @LM Eeep, again? They have been working on electrical equipment down by the common pool. It is worrisome if it is steaming again. It did that after the power was out for hours a few days ago.

  • @lilly Yep..it definitely looks like something is going on.
    by LM 7/25/2011 4:00:53 PM

  • By now even the good joint and welds have to be feeling some stress from all these "aftershocks" that are all still at the top end of design limitation for a plant built in a quake zone that was never supposed to be capable of generating a quake bugger than a 5.5 or whatever they thought it was. Of course, that limit is only for the short-sighted who don't bother to go back in the historic record to the 869 Sanriku quake and tsumani.
    by RadioGuy 7/25/2011 4:04:08 PM

  • Oh thank God, there's the coffee....
    by RadioGuy 7/25/2011 4:05:51 PM

  • @RadioGuy 5.7 and that value is base reference to the strongest nuclear plant designs around the world. Japanese NPPs are, in fact, among the strongest in design or so we've been led to believe.
