  • From the article below " A shocking discovery at Fukushima was that zirconium (used as a "transparent" - allowing passage of neutrons - protective cladding around the fuel rods) when superheated can become a catalyst for an esoteric type of nuclear fission. At extreme temperatures, zirconium ignites even the tiniest quantities of airborne nuclear isotopes, releasing "blue lightning". This means that zirconium catalysis could also be occurring underground, triggering mini-fission events. This sort of nuclear reaction is terra incognita, a yet unexplored frontier of physics, the joker in the deck."

  • If driving an electric vehicle (EV) is a conscious decision you've made as a good steward of the environment, shouldn't you expect the same from your vehicle's charging station? Sure, plugging in your EV is a fine way to cut down on your gasoline consumption, but that charging station is still sucking energy from a coal- or natural gas-powered grid.
Driver's who want to take a closer step toward a more off-the-grid existence will be happy to learn that on Monday Urban Green Energy (UGE) and GE unveiled the Sanya Skypump, an electric vehicle charging station that combines the technology of GE's WattStation and UGE's Sanya hybrid wind-solar streetlamp.
“Building upon the success of the GE WattStation, GE continuously is seeking evolutionary EV solutions,” said Michael Mahan in a company press release. Mahan is product general manager at GE Energy Industrial Solutions. “By marrying the elegant design of UGE’s Sanya Streetlamp with the GE WattStation, we have enabled the further adoption of electric vehicles by making access to renewable power easier.”

  • @ariadne You did it the right way. We put an article in peer review so it doesn't post it to the main page. It will show up in the links or if someone goes searching for it etc. Peer review keeps it sort of hidden and doesn't put it in the twitter broadcasts. I will grab your list of changes. I also have one from Dean that he emailed to me and add them into the document. Once we have the document ready to go I copy it into a new post and put it on the home page, so our discussions etc at peer review stay back there and don't show on the final product. ;-)

  • Michael Hoffmann at the California Institute of Technology has been experimenting with solar-powered water treatment on a small scale. Now he plans to incorporate this technology into a portable toilet.

Sunlight powers an electrochemical reaction with human waste in water that generates microbe-killing oxidants and releases hydrogen gas. The researchers plan to collect the hydrogen in a fuel cell to power a light or possibly even a self-cleaning mechanism.

He received a grant this week from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to build a prototype. He says he can build one toilet for $2000 and hopes to reduce the cost through design refinement and mass production.

This grant is part of the Gates Foundation's latest global public health initiative to improve sanitation.

  • I just got told in response to the teacher link which I put on my fbook (thanks @Majj) that there is no wonder the world is so apathetic it is because the Japanese people would rather keep it quiet what has happened than protect their own children :(
I cannot even be angry because this well informed person truly believes that what she has been told is true so it isnt just GOJ giving out misinformation it is coming from closer to home than goj

  • @joniver : the combination of solar/wind energy and car is only the beginning of the entire idea: decentral energy production in every house + car batteries as energy storage. every car that is not running will be connected to the new power grid and the battery energy can be resp. the battery will be recharged. this would be the model for bigger cities to effectively use renewable energy. it is presented in the visionary movie EnergyAutonomy - the 4th Revolution. highly recommendable.
    by Edano 7/28/2011 5:43:30 PM

  • @Edano It's time has come, the technology is out there all we need now is a global push and a philanthropic billionaire like Gates to make it happen.

    by Edano 7/28/2011 6:05:09 PM

  • @elainekirk : yes, of course, and this will save lots of energy, because the long power lines lose a huge part of the energy !

  • Main points of Japan-Mongolia foreign ministerial meeting

NUSA DUA, Indonesia, July 23, Kyodo

The following are the main points of a press release issued by the Japanese Foreign Ministry on a meeting Saturday between the Japanese and Mongolian foreign ministers on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

-- Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto expressed his gratitude to his Mongolian counterpart Gombojav Zandanshatar for Mongolia's assistance in the wake of the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

-- The two foreign ministers agreed that Japan and Mongolia will prepare to launch negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement, following the conclusion of a joint FTA study in March.

-- Matsumoto expressed hope that Japanese firms will be able to invest in projects to develop the Tavan Tolgoi coal mine in Mongolia.

-- The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on issues such as nuclear cooperation. [well, we know what this means...]
