IAEA to take lead role in securing safer nuclear future: Amano
NAGANO, Japan, July 27, Kyodo
International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano said Wednesday the atomic watchdog will play a ''lead role'' in creating a safer nuclear future, as global use of nuclear energy will likely continue for decades despite the accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
In a keynote address at the U.N. Conference on Disarmament Issues which opened Wednesday in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, the IAEA director general described Japan's worst nuclear crisis as ''one of the most serious and complex disasters which human beings have ever had to deal with.''
''Despite Fukushima Daiichi, global use of nuclear power will continue to grow in the coming decades and will remain an important option for many countries,'' Amano said. ''Nuclear safety is the responsibility of individual states, but the IAEA will play the lead role in shaping a safer nuclear future throughout the world.''

@ariadne Do you have the ability to at least give a clue what this document is about? One of the reliable tweeters posted it last night as a photo. yfrog.com big version if you use the link

@Edano I have noticed an organized effort with IAEA, NRC etc over the last week to attempt to claim everything is getting back to normal and nuclear power is back to advancing and expanding. Very creepy manipulative effort to convince people in a subtle way.
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:29:18 PM

@lillymunster : in fact, the iaea has completely failed in this disaster. this is the truth.
by Edano 7/27/2011 4:36:30 PM

@LM That is an excellent idea. I wonder if we could send the link to some of the news shows and get a producer looking for content to grab onto it?
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:40:56 PM

@Peter Melzer Bobby seemed to have a line on finding that data. We should ask. There was one posted last week, not sure what dates it was for though.
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:41:43 PM

I don't have CTBTO but this CRIIRAD was posted here last week.

@ariadne I have another thing you could help with if you have time let me know.
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:46:34 PM

@LM go dig around on their show page, sometimes there will be a contact link for a news show like that for people to send it tips or give show feedback.
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:47:55 PM

@LM give them an idea why it would be compelling show content. Producers are always strapped for content on deadlines. Sometimes sort of doing their research for them is enough to get one interested. BTW. I have a link for a producer at RT that Bo gave me, we could send to her. She might have a use for it.
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:50:43 PM

@Peter Melzer Can you repost the Oyster Creek document?
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:54:15 PM

@ariadne We need to do one more pass looking for any data on Kashiwazaki's MOX assemblies for a date range of Oct 2010 to March 11, 2011. What we are looking for is any mention or documentation of the MOX stored at Kashiwazaki during that date range. It could be an inspection or discussion of doing something with it etc. The concern is that they might have moved the MOX assemblies out of Kashiwazaki to Daiichi for future use and that they could have possibly been in the spent fuel pool of #3 during the accident.
I did an advanced Google search on Google.com but a second set of eyes would be good to make sure I didn't miss something. We also need to search on Google.jp. I can give you search terms and how to use Google.jp if you don't read Japanese.
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:59:10 PM

@ariadne Not sure. I only saw it on twitter in English language tweets.
by lillymunster 7/27/2011 4:59:52 PM

@lillymunster : the paper refers to the icrp recommendations from 2007:
