    Strong earthquake hits Fukushima

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.5 jolted Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Sunday morning.

The Meteorological Agency says the quake occurred at around 3:53 AM.

The quake's focus is off Fukushima Prefecture and is 57 kilometers deep.

Tremors with an intensity of 5 plus on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 hit Naraha Town and Kawauchi Village in Fukushima.

There is no chance of a tsunami.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says there have been no reports of abnormalities at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear power plants.

  • TEPCO to test run cooling system for No.4 reactor

The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is set to test run a system to cool a spent fuel storage pool at the No.4 reactor as early as Sunday.

The pool holds 1,535 fuel rods, the most for any of the plant's reactors. A hydrogen blast on March 15th damaged a wall supporting the pool. The temperature of the pool water remained high at 86 to 87 degrees Celsius on Friday.

Tokyo Electric Power Company began reinforcing the wall with steel pillars and concrete in late May. It also started setting up a cooling device with a heat exchanger in mid-July. This is designed to establish a circulatory cooling system that pumps water out of the pool, cools the water, and returns it to the pool.

The work on strengthening the wall and setting up a cooling system ended on Saturday. Tokyo Electric Power hopes to test run the cooling system as early as Sunday and start full operation if no problem occurs.

TEPCO intends to reduce the temperature of the pool water to around 30 to 40 degrees within one month.

A similar cooling system is in place for spent fuel rod pools at the No.2 and No.3 reactors. TEPCO wants to test run a cooling system for the No.1 reactor no later than early August.

  • Some 100 lawyers to mediate nuclear disputes

The Japan Federation of Bar Associations will assign around 100 lawyers to mediate settlements at proposed state entities dealing with compensation disputes related to the Fukushima nuclear accident.

In April, the government formed a panel to work on who is eligible for compensation in a bid to swiftly assist those affected by the accident.

The panel is holding discussions on creating dispute-settlement centers in Tokyo and Fukushima Prefecture.

The panel plans to have legal experts, including lawyers, bring about settlements. The Japan Federation of Bar Associations is making a list of about 100 lawyers to be recommended for the work.

The federation is also preparing to appoint 30 lawyers as screening officers tasked with looking into compensation claims and compiling points of contention.

The federation's secretary general, Yuichi Kaido, says his organization will do its utmost as the dispute-resolution centers are designed to handle the unprecedented size of compensation quickly and fairly.

  • We, the coalition of Japanese Non Governmental Organizations hereby request a country visit to Japan by UN Special Rapportuers for the aim of fact-finding missions on the human rights situations affected by the East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima First Nuclear Plants accidents.
Since the situation is quite urgent and many people’s fundamental human rights have been at stake, please kindly consider our request and realize the mission at your earliest convenience.

Introduction: It has been over three months since the Great East Japan Earthquake which resulted in the deaths and missing of more than 20,000 people. Although the reconstruction works have gradually started, human rights of affected people are still not fully guaranteed.................

  • Surely my post about NHK was poorly written. What I mean is JPA's data are 40Km depth (not 57 Km as said by NHK) and M6.4 (not 6.5 as noted by NHK). I think that is poor journalism.

  • @estacion ah. I thought you meant they had not covered it.

  • @Thunder those units are steaming it has to be going somewhere and if tepco are to be believed it is not coming to ground in the area around the plant
    by elainekirk 7/30/2011 11:36:14 PM

  • @Elaine well that's where it's at, everywhere and that was always going to be the problem, it dosen't travel in a sweet little unform pattern like a 30km radius line does! Too many factors play a role in it's dispersal and it's sometimes subsequent reconcentration. Would be interesting to know what type of plant the mulch is from, and I am guessing it's mainly desposited cesium on the leaf surface, which means they would have done well to wash it first! The water of course then would have been a problem after that. On the beef too, I read the thing about different parts containing different amounts.....weird, because they are talking (from what I could understand) about two parts that lie directly ontop of one another, in the end though it's all prime red meat readings, if they want some interesting results they should check the offal, like the kidneys and the tripe! I would hate to be the person who ate those kidneys!!!!!

  • @Elaine....err, McDonalds minces whole shoulders.....I wish I was joking! From what I can guess, they mean the blade tested higher while the chuck roll tested lower.....in non-butcher terms that means the meat atop the shoulder blade bone is higher while the meat under this bone that lies along the high centeral back bone extending into the neck meat is lower...which may be a good thing because from the chuck is where the pharma beef tendon is collected!

  • @elainekirk cool.
    by lillymunster 7/31/2011 12:04:53 AM

  • @Elaine all of it could end up anywhere because of poor management, imo it shouldn't be the end user testing for contamination it should be the producers testing before dispact to ensure integrity of the product! That goes for everything! Anyways...I am out for a while, gota get some work done! @All stay well! BTW nice badge, maybe they should have built a dosimetre into one!:-)
