  • What we eat after Fukushima Rice prices in shops have increased 20-30% recently, from under 1500 yen per 5 kg bag to 1800-2000 yen per bag. This is the result of consumers stocking up on 2010 rice ahead of the next harvest, which is less than 2 months away. People appear to be concerned about what levels of cesium will be measured in 2011 rice. Beef exceeding government limits had already made it to supermarket shelves and dinner tables before the problem was detected, so people are naturally concerned if this won’t also happen with rice. It’s not an easy problem. By mixing rice from different areas, perhaps no single bag of blended rice exceeds government limits, but that is not the answer. www.joewein.net

  • Decontamination spray gel tested at Japan school. HONOLULU (AP) — Soap and water can keep kids clean, but keeping children protected from radiation may require more than just a soapy concoction.
A Hawaii company is spraying its light-blue decontamination gel onto surfaces of a small kindergarten in Fukushima, Japan, where children currently stay inside all day to avoid dangerous nuclear pollution.
If this weekend's decontamination of Asahimachi Baptist Church and School is successful and more effective than the traditional soap and water scrub downs, Honolulu-based CBI Polymers hopes to expand use of their product, called DeconGel, to many other hot spots affected by radiation leaked from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. www.canadianbusiness.com

  • @Majj if they got an adequate compensation system where tepco/gov bought and retained contaminated produce/goods then this would be avoided
    by elainekirk 7/31/2011 1:07:19 AM

  • @elainekirk It needs a 3rd party without anything to financially lose to administrate it. TEPCO and GoJ can't seem to bring themselves to do the right thing.

People are still fighting BP in the US for compensation and that was minor by comparison at least the human impact.
    by lillymunster 7/31/2011 1:17:20 AM

  • UNCONFIRMED!! According to the information I entered, an accident occurred at the nuclear submarine navy in Dalian, China 29, it is leaking radioactivity. Surrounding it have been tightly closed by the military, rather 状況Rashii extremely dangerous.

Beijing government does not release anyway? The will, and neighboring countries should be self-defense, such as Japanese fishing boats fishing in waters that this would care.

Another, "foreign" insurance companies, according to the number of high-speed train accident victim this time, 259 people died today, 183 people injured, 154 people missing persons, victims say more is expected to increase.

Locally will have continued to protest the family victims forever, missing ... was wondering because it floating around the word, suddenly the government in wonder "double compensation" has been found to reason.

In this country, "Hidden accident" is not said Soredokoro in Japan.

Stop, the Foreign Ministry, as well as to each of China's media "radiation leak accident" Do not hurry to get information. Made in China from nuclear accidents will be unavoidable, but take care of yellow dust flying next time. Hasten to the information?

  • M6.5 quake hits Fukushima, no impact on nuclear plant

    TOKYO, July 31, Kyodo

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 jolted Fukushima Prefecture and its vicinity early Sunday morning, but it did not cause further trouble at the already crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

No tsunami warning was issued in the wake of the 3:54 a.m. quake, which measured upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Naraha and Kawauchi in Fukushima and lower 5 in several other parts of the prefecture as well as in parts of Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The focus of the quake, which is believed to be an aftershock of the March 11 killer quake, was off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at a depth of about 57 kilometers, according to the agency. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Interesting bit from an article about evacuation planning for people's cats. Microchipped pets would make the lost and missing pets issue much easier to deal with. Rescue groups would know exactly who and where the owners originally were. The other being these window stickers some local goverments give out when you license or rabies tag a dog. The sticker goes in a window or front gate and double as emergency responder info that animals were/are at that house. www.lifehacker.jp

  • I am sort of surprised that after two aftershocks/quakes of 5.6+ near Fukushima in the past week and torrential rains I can find very few if any articles related to the impact on the nuclear plant? It seems this must have some effect... Or some awesome planning/work has been done to contain things prior to these events? Last I knew the steel holding up the spent fuel pool in reactor 4 was still at risk, among other urgent items.

  • @Darren TEPCO finished the concrete support under the SFP. Beyond that not much has been said. THey did put a cover on #3 turbine roof before the last typhoon. I don't know if anyone has checked weather station data for local rainfall. The water containing situation is a problem that more water fills up the trenches & basements

  • Officials ordered evacuations for hundreds of thousands of residents in northern Japan on Saturday (July 30) as record breaking rains have caused massive floods that have left one dead and five missing. Local media reported that the government has ordered evacuation for nearly 400,000 citizens in the affected areas. Residents of Japan's Niigata and Fukushima prefecture have faced record breaking rains over the last two days, causing flooding and mud slides in dirt that was already loosened in March's massive earthquake. The city of Minami Uonuma saw 562 milliliters of rain fall over a 72 hour period, leaving the engorged river to run through the city streets and leaving residents to deal with the damage. The flooding has claimed the life of one elderly man after he accidentally drove into an enlarged river and a total of five people are missing in Fukushima and Niigata. Roads have also been shut due to mudslides as the rain caused slippage in the already weakened ground. Japanese officials have continued to call for caution as more rain is expected overnight.

The hydroelectric plants around Lake Inawashiro were placed under the management of Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc., where they remain today. "The conclusion, to be published in April after six years of work, is based largely on a radical revision of projections of how much and how quickly cesium 137, a radioactive material that is created when uranium is split, could escape from a nuclear plant after a core meltdown. In past studies, researchers estimated that 60 percent of a reactor core’s cesium inventory could escape; the new estimate is only 1 to 2 percent."
