  • Antinuclear group's summer campaign begins in Fukushima

    FUKUSHIMA, Japan, July 31, Kyodo

One of Japan's leading antinuclear groups on Sunday kicked off its nationwide summer campaign in Fukushima city, located some 50 kilometers from the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, as it sought to press its case for the abolition of nuclear power.

It was the first time for the Japan Congress Against A- and H-Bombs to hold an event in the city since its founding in 1965.

Several hundred people gathered for the opening event organized by the congress and other groups under the slogan ''Human beings and atomic power cannot coexist.''

    Charity soccer on Brazilian beach

Children from the tsunami-hit city of Kamaishi in northeastern Japan traveled to Brazil to take part in a beach soccer charity event.

Four elementary school students from a soccer club in Kamaishi were invited to the charity match held in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

A former member of the Japanese J-League club Kashima Antlers, Alcindo Sartori, participated in the event as well as a former Brazilian national team member, Cafu.

The players took pictures and shook hands with the children before the match, encouraging them to keep playing soccer despite the disaster.

The Japanese children watched as Cafu scored goals and players ran around barefoot on the beach.

Sixth grader Kaito Itazawa said he was happy to meet the famous players and get their autographs. He said that they inspired him.

Cafu said it was an honor to invite the children to Brazil. He said he wants them to have hope and peace of mind.

The Japanese children will play soccer with Brazilian youngsters before returning to Japan on Thursday.

  • Apparently China and Japan stating posting it others problems. Good for the word that end up getting some truth . Waters close to Fukushima plant affected by radiation: China. Waters of the western Pacific, close to Japan''s tsunami-hit nuclear plant, are "clearly affected" by the radioactive materials leaked from the crippled Fukushima facility, tests by China''s state agency have found.
China''s State Oceanic Administration, which conducted the studies in the area, said today that waters in the western Pacific region, close to the east and southeast of the Fukushima nuclear power plant are found to have radioactive material in excess of normal quantities.
Initial tests of samples collected from these areas show that radioactive Cesium-137 and -134, as well as Strontium-90 can be found in all water samples, it said in a statement. news.in.msn.com

  • An estimated 1,700 people rallied in the capital of Japan's Fukushima region, home to a crippled atomic power plant, on Sunday, calling for an end to nuclear energy, local media reported.

"Abolish all the nuclear power plants!" and "Give radiation-free Fukushima back to us," the demonstrators chanted as they marched in Fukushima City, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the nuclear plant.

The rally, joined by residents evacuated from areas outside the Fukushima Daiichi plant, was organised by the Japan Congress Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs as part of its longtime campaign against nuclear weapons.

  • Kan criticizes nuke watchdog for manipulation

Prime Minister Naoto Kan has criticized Japan's nuclear regulator for trying to manipulate public opinion on nuclear power.

Kan attended an energy policy forum on Sunday in Chino, north of Tokyo. He referred to the alleged manipulation of opinion on nuclear energy by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

The agency allegedly told Chubu Electric Power Company to ensure that some participants at a symposium asked prearranged questions in favor of nuclear power. The event was held 4 years ago in Shizuoka Prefecture, which hosts a nuclear plant.

Kan said if the allegation is true, it means that the agency sided with the utility to promote nuclear power, although the agency should ensure the safety of nuclear plants for the public.

Kan likened the agency's allegation to the scandal of tainted blood products, which he tackled when he was health minister in the mid-1990s.

In the 1980s, many people, mostly patients with hemophilia, contracted HIV through tainted products because the health ministry allowed drugmakers to sell them even after safer products were developed.

Kan said the current nuclear administration and system totally lack the ability of responding to nuclear accidents. He put the blame on the realignment of government offices about a decade ago under Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto that created various committees in the Cabinet Office.
Kan expressed his resolve to address the fundamental reorganization of institutions related to energy policy, and not just the separation of the agency from the economy ministry. He said he will pursue a fundamental reconstruction of the nuclear and energy administration from a position free from any vested interests.

  • Full operation of cooling device begins

The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has begun full operation of a device to cool a spent fuel storage pool.

The pool holds 1,535 fuel rods, the most for any of the plant's reactors. The wall supporting the pool was damaged in a blast on March 15th.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company reinforced the wall with steel pillars and concrete, and installed a cooling device with a heat exchanger to set up a circulatory cooling system.

TEPCO conducted a test-run of the cooling device at the Number 4 reactor's spent fuel pool on Sunday morning. It gradually increased the volume of water flowing into the device before shifting to full operation in the afternoon.
TEPCO says the water temperature of the pool remained above 86 degrees Celsius in the morning and it was around 82 to 84 degrees as of 5 PM.

The company plans to lower the water temperature to around 55 degrees within a month to cool the reactor in a stable manner.

TEPCO is already cooling the water in the spent fuel pools at the Number 2 and 3 reactors. It plans to do the same for the Number 1 reactor soon.

  • Fukushima residents join antinuclear group's summer campaign

    By Junko Horiuchi
    FUKUSHIMA, Japan, July 31, Kyodo

Fukushima residents joined the chorus calling for the elimination of nuclear power as one of Japan's leading antinuclear groups on Sunday kicked off its nationwide summer campaign in the city of Fukushima, located around 50 kilometers from the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

It was the first time for the Japan Congress Against A- and H-Bombs to start its annual campaign in the city since its founding in 1965, ahead of the anniversaries of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as it sought to press its case for the scrapping of nuclear power this year.

Koichi Kawano, a Nagasaki atomic-bomb survivor who heads the organizing group, told more than 800 participants at the opening event in a hotel, ''We have opposed nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants under the slogan 'Human beings and atomic power cannot coexist.' But we have to admit our responsibility for causing the accident. We failed to make enough efforts to prevent it.''

  • Japan should contribute to world water management: 2011 white paper

    TOKYO, July 31, Kyodo

Japan with its advanced water management technologies should make a greater global contribution amid more frequent droughts, heavy rainfall and flooding due to the warming of the atmosphere, said a government white paper released Sunday.

Around 900 million people in the world did not have access to clean drinking water as of 2008, with droughts hitting China and Russia, and flooding in Australia in the short period after 2010, the 2011 white paper on water resources said.

''The problems will possibly affect Japan through exports of agricultural products from those countries,'' therefore it is necessary for the country to expand the scope of international cooperation in water management at various levels, including central and municipal governments as well as private businesses, it said. Private-sector water business is also included in the possible areas. english.kyodonews.jp

    by lillymunster 7/31/2011 4:38:24 PM

  • @lillymunster , I cannot find a part 2, but felt that part 1 contains incriminating statements by high level Japanese politicians that will come to bear in their next election. Furthermore, I find the claim highly interesting that hardened venting of unit 1 was delayed many hours in the night from Friday to Saturday, because the operators had never practiced a brachial procedure and did not know where the valves were. I wonder whether that 'd be different overhere. With brachial I mean that you go in personally and actuate the valve by hand. When the manuals refer to manual procedures they commonly seem to refer to flipping a switch in the control room by hand. The editor of the site states that the documentary is blocked on youtube. Thus, it be good to keep a copy safe somewhere. I use r-player.

  • @Peter Melzer I downloaded a batch of videos that were getting pulled from Youtube a few months ago. Will grab copies of these and put copies on my server with a page of links so people can get copies for themselves or watch the videos. YouTube seems to be a double edged sword.
