  • The theater is just so thick these days fiction looks more believable. You couldn't write the news into a plot. It would be called "too far-fetched; beyond willing suspension of disbelief."
    by RadioGuy 8/1/2011 11:14:55 PM

  • @RadioGuy I swear I said that to my grown kids the other day, almost word-for-word.
    by M.I.A. 8/1/2011 11:15:53 PM

  • well... a decade or so ago, maybe... by now, we could write this stuff in our sleep.
    by RadioGuy 8/1/2011 11:15:54 PM

  • @Edano , if such high activities had been gushing through or sitting in this pipe, one would have detected suspiciously high levels through the pipe metal even without this break. The stack monitor should have shown them as well. Also 10 Sv is the detection limit. The actual level could be much greater. I hope the guy who held out his detector is okay.
by Peter Melzer 8/1/2011 11:16:51 PM

  • According to NHK the Japanese government has asked "rice-producing regions" to test their rice for radiation. Well, considering rice is grown from Okinawa to Hokkaido they are saying rice needs to be tested across the entire nation of Japan. And if rice has to be tested then potentially everything growing outside has to be. Or am I missing a logical step?
    by Will 8/1/2011 11:17:52 PM

  • @Peter Melzer yes, it's strange. the pipe would not be able to shield the radiation. maybe there was still pressure in it and steam/water flew out.

  • @All hi! Can't stay long, I had a video it's from 60 minutes Australia, it aired a while ago, but it's about second and third generation cancers caused by exposure to the parents/grandparents from the Brit nuclear tests here in Aus. I can't figure out how to put a direct link to it, so here is the link to the video index( sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au ), it's on page 7 and it's called "Nuclear Time Bomb", it's pretty scary to think one dosen't have to be exposed, instead just damaged dna from exposed parents can cause second and third generation cancers.

    by elainekirk 8/2/2011 12:26:16 AM

  • @Elaine @Edano no worries. Generally the point is...... well it dosen't matter if they clean it all up now, chances are the effects of exposure on those present now will be passed to their kids and grand kids, even if they themselves(kids/grandkids) aren't exposed......if they realize that...... well??? @Elaine no it isn't!!! I think maybe facebook "like" might be the only way??? I tried "share" and "tweet" still wouldn't direct link!

  • @All, Ok gota go again, need to get some gardening finished! For the first time I actually thought how lucky I am to be able to do gardening, no cesium, plutonium, uranium or strontium, I can dig without fear, eat without fear and live without fear! Something that all people around the world should be able to do......but alas the TEPCO monster fair well fuku'd that up!!!!
    by Thunder 8/2/2011 12:40:34 AM

  • @lillymunster legal liability if they leave a video up that shows that they were warned of the dangers absolute proof that they knew from a reliable source.....they will take down anything that could later be used against them in a court of law
    by elainekirk 8/2/2011 12:40:35 AM

  • @Thunder well said Thunder and enjoy your gardening
    by elainekirk 8/2/2011 12:41:26 AM

  • @elainekirk They get stupid enough about censorship we can start putting things on file sharing sites. Messing with a video of something little known is one thing. This guy testified in front of the Diet, that as far as I know would be public record.

Something better get solved with the rice growers or the beef debacle is going to seem like nothing. :-(
    by lillymunster 8/2/2011 12:43:24 AM

  • i embed the video, but it always shows rod stewart. :-(
    by Edano 8/2/2011 12:45:17 AM

  • @Edano Rod's press agent arranged it. All videos are now Rod Stewart. :-)
    by lillymunster 8/2/2011 12:45:50 AM

  • @lillymunster : must be some kind of joke. every video on that site links to rod. ;)
    by Edano 8/2/2011 12:46:47 AM

  • @lillymunster they wont let the world see it may look as though they were failing the people of Japan
@edano I think we will just have to stay with the link which has got a transcript as well as vid so could be useful sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au but you did make a valliant effort
    by elainekirk 8/2/2011 12:47:34 AM

    by Edano 8/2/2011 1:01:26 AM

  • In my possession, I have a copy of the guidelines that TEPCO presented to the government on how to handle press releases. The title of the document, dated June 13, is "Underground boundary' -- Regarding the press." It is split into five categories on how to handle the announcement of construction of an underground boundary. In essence, it says, "We are considering the issue under the guidance of prime ministerial aide Mabuchi, but we don't want to be seen as having excess liabilities, so we're keeping the details confidential."

Possibly the silliest response to envisaged questions from reporters is TEPCO's suggestion for a reply to the question, "Why hasn't construction been quickly started?" The response reads: "Underground water flows at a speed of about 5 to 10 centimeters a day, so we have more than a year before it reaches the shore."
